Hey guys. I'm alt-tabbing out of a task force encounter. I've manageds to cripple a Kongo but it took all of my Mk10 torpedoes (S-class). The BS doens't have any intention to sink but is for all means and purposes dead in the water: it's stern is deep under and the bow is out of the water slightly. due to this it was a blind spot directly behind it ar ranges of over 3000 (found this out the hard way :( ). I've already expended all of my ammo trying to get the b**** to sink but she just won't go down. Now seeing as how this is a first patrol and this is the first encounter I decided to try and go Kamikaze at the thing.

I tried ramming into the stern at flank speed (9knts). To my surprise, instead of taking massive damage I just... popped above the water! Just as if magic had pushed me clear of the ship. I then tried ramming the bow while running at 10m depth - instead of colliding with the battleship, my sub got pushed to just below the belly of the warship.

Kinda makes you wonder if you ever need to worry about colliding with anything but a destroyer ever again.

On a sidenote, I'm using Trigger Maru and all realism settings except external view.

Don't worry about hitting DDs either, they usually explode.

The game needs a serious fix of collisions.

Glad to hear someone else tried this in a momment of frustration and desperation. I tried it on a large merchant during my first or second patrol, luckily I thought to save while approaching at flank speed on the surface towards the starboard side of my target.(Only left myself about 15 seconds to impact though...) I rammed her head on and took massive damage before sinking. Thankfully after reloading back emergency was enough to stop another fatal encounter and I was forced to slink away. Rather irked...

Here are some screenshots of the BB encounter:

1. This is what the BB looked like after unloading my tubes 3 times into it: of the 12 Mk10s shot, 3 were duds and 4 missed (one of them missed the bow by inches). You can see the dents in the aft section and the dead-in-the-water position.

2. This is me on approach. Notice I'm fairly surfaced and on a direct collision course with the Kongo.

3. This is the moment of impact. Surprise! I just get bumped off. My S-class seems to be a tough lil' bugger - to ram into a 30 ton battleship and come out without a scratch isn't really easy.

This is an extra shot: due to the flooding, the BB had a total blind spot directly behind it. I was able to get within 300m of it on my second try and unload all my 220 shells at point blank. To nobody's surpise, the BB didn't seem to care much about gunfire :P

So you only got 5 actual hits. I can see where it might not want to sink after that. On the other hand your post is about the collisions, and of course everybody agrees, you should be dead after ramming him twice, or at least heading home with a seriously bent bow.:dead:

Well, SH3 had similar problems.

This reminds me of that old joke...

"Hey doc ! I hurts when I do this..."

"Well then dont do that." :p

Yea I didn't expect it to go down with 5 torps (tho I have been lucky during another encoutner). Further testing direct collisions reveals that unless there's a DD involved -- there won't be any damage to either vessel. At least Mogamis, Kongos, Ises and some other light cruisers don't seem to collide in a realistic manner with the sub.

The fact that the DD-sub collision model is nerfed might be "play balance" crap. Since DDs aim to drive over you, mayber they decided it was too easy to die.

I'd prefer a realism toggle.

DDs still inflict damage on collision. They are the only class I know of that actually do that. For everythign else, it just pushes you under or above (trying to ram a half sunk ship will put you on top, if that's the closest position)

In these type of discussions I am always reminded of a conversation between CJ "Smut" Martin, one of the developers of Janes F-15, and someone who had discovered that you could land the jet upside down.

After the aforemention rocket-scientist had gone on at length about how the sim was obviously a piece of crap, Smut popped up and asked him how he could be so sure that you couldn't land an F-15 upside down in real life. Had anyone ever tried it?

Our hero repled that no pilot in his right mind would ever try such a stupid, idiotic stunt, and that they would have to be a complete moron to even attempt it.

Smut just smiled.

DDs sometimes inflict damage, more often than not they don't (I tested it for a while).

Unfortunately, in SH's case the issue is mroe pressing: you needn't worry abotu collisions (at all) unless it's with a DD, a mine or the seabed..

I dunno how things have been going for all you gents, and by the way John...nice story, but I've been sunk by a Ramming DD and suffered bad damage. Also as I listed above I sank after I tried to ram a large merchant as well as when I accidentally rammed a U.S. cruiser while entering a port under TC. I've actually never had a DD explode when it rammed me. So for my game (These experiences have taken place with vanilla 1.02) the damage seems realistic enough.
