I don't seam to have the option ever to use the sonar to estimate distance or anything. It is always greyed out. Does it only work on 100% realisim? Interestinly enough I am using the WO assist and stabilize view and still have 100% realisim usein NYGM mod.

You only get the hydrophone (as far as I know, I haven't played past 1940 at this point >.>) until you get to a Type XXI, which mounted active sonar for attacks.

I think.

No Sonar is a purchaseable piece of equipment depending on what date
and what sub. Hydrophones are seperately listed. the XXI active sonar
was good enough to shoot on submerged unlike the previous types which
would only provide Range to target.

I have the same problem and I dont understand the data you post?

Can you be more specific?

I can buy a sonar to my boat but it is not possible to operate it?

no, he listed the dates when the sonar became available. that means that you cannot equip your sub with a sonar till 1942. since that year, the sonar is available and you can use it freely. you man the sonar yourself or you can ask your SO to send a ping in order to find the range to target. or, if you want, you can point the hydrophone needle towards the contact (must appear on notepad like merchant/warship ergo it has to be closer than 7.5 km). then you push the button for sending a ping. then the range to target will appear. in order to get the most precise range to target, you will have to ping the target several times, or just keep pinging. however, this is not recommended if you are in dangerous area because the ping can give away your position to enemy (it never ever happened to me, though). hope it helped.

AFAIK, yes. unless there would be a bug...:)

I dont know for certain it would depend on what version.

in my mind it should work with decks awash but Ive played previous
sims where it wouldnt work until radar/schnorkel depth.

I have had destroyers B-line my position after i used the echolot to find the depth of the ocean below me.

they were depth charging out in the wrong area about 2 KM away and i sent a ping to the sea floor and they all dropped what they were doing and rushed right over to me.

So you're saying there is no way to estimate range via the hydrophone unless you have pinging equipped sonar - later on in the game.....even though Icon buttons appear to be clickable for the Sonar Operator.

2nd question, there is also a command for the Sonar operator to 'Follow Nearest Sonar Contact'.
When I select this - even when it is a ship clearly identified as a Warship - or Merchant on the notepad - and I leave the Sonar station - returning a few moments later - the Sonar Guy has moved on 'round the clock.
Perhaps this is also related to later pinging capable Sonar.

take a look at this hydrophone tutorial, it will teach you how to get the range to target without the ping (and a lot more...)
