View Full Version : Noobie Torpedo timing problem

First, I should mention that I haven't played SH since it was just SH. There was no 2, 3 or 4. I am a complete Noob to the modern versions.

I got everything running Ok on my system and started out with a quick mission to get the hang of things (Midway). I have the TDC set to Auto so things don't get too complicated until I get the hang of the game.

However, and this is a big however, I can't seem to hit anything! I get into a good 90 degree firing postion without being detected or damaged and Lock a target under 1000 meters. From what I understand the firing solution is automatically sent to the TDC but I get no love.

The part I don't understand is how do I know when it's the right moment to fire? My torpedoes always miss. Am I supposed to shoot when the triangle cursor goes Green? This could be tough because I'm partially colorblind.

I've read the manual and a whole bunch of forum postings but still can't seem to get the shoot timing right. Any hints/tips would be much appreciated.

Welcome:up: ddales & oli123456789

There is this as well.

Also what settings are you playing in, the game defaults to higher settings at start-up. If you don't already know, you can change them in the gameplay settings under options.

Be patient with it, ask questions, folks here will help.

Good Hunting to both of you.

Yep, I saw that. Problem is, if I can't figure out how to score hits with automated settings I'm almost certain I won't be able to hit anything manually. I just want to know how to see "the right moment to shoot". Once I get that down after a while I'll probably move to manual targeting.

Welcome to the forum!

When you want to hit soemthing with a torpedo, get in rather close (I've been able to sink ships from 6000 and beyond but odds are pretty slim. Safest way (good way to start too) is to lock onto a target that is relatively close and moving slow to medium speed in a straight line. Fire when the little triangle turns green. You should use external camera or event camera to see hwo the shot goes. A nearly perfect shot would result in the torpedo running straight.

Another way you can miss by miles is by accidently having the Spread dial of the TDC set to a non-zero value. I've missed anchored cruisers like that

Thanks for the tip. I was playing around with all the controls getting familiar with the game and probably have some setting screwed up.

I thought that was the procedure was to get close, lock a target, select a tube, and wait for the green triangle to shoot.

But like I said, out of many many tries I was only able to sink one ship and all my other torpedoes missed. I'll have to check all the settings to make sure I don't have something out of wack.

Thanks!

Try this

1) Predict your target's path
2) Get into a position where you will be 1000yrds (900 mtrs) from where your target will be when you'll launch (so, ambush your target). Ensure your stern or bow is pointed towards where your target will be, so ideally in a 90 degree angle on the projected target path.
3) Through your periscope, identify your target and lock it (L key)
4) I am assuming you do not use manual targetting here. So, ensure that your Torpedo Data Computer (TDC) receives continuous updates. On the panel on the left hand side, ensure that the light turns red
5) Open the torpedo tube (Q key)
6) Ensure that your torpedo is not running too deep and ensure it is set to Fast.
7) When the target is close enough, fire. A good solution is indicated by the locking button on the right panel (the one where you select the tube you'll fire from) lighting up. Don't wait until the bearing in your periscope is 0 (so, don't wait till the target is straight in front of you). These are torpedoes, not bullets. They take a while to travel to the target.
8) Call up the chrono. It times how far you are from impact, so you can count down.
