I just purchased SHIII and had a few questions.
Is there a manual that comes with this game or is it just luck by trial and error? I downloaded the game over the net from directtodisc so I didn't get the normal packaging that comes with the installation CD.
I just started my first mission. Is there a way to jump to nav point rather than just sitting there watching your boat make it's slow way across an ocean? In the first mission, I am supposed to patrol Area 81. I navigated out of port and then ploted a course to the nav point. I instructed my navigator to follow the new course and headed out Flank Speed. After two hours at time compression +32, I wasn't even half way there. I had to go to bed having accomplished nothing.:shifty:
Also, what does it mean when your crew start appearing with a red ! next to their icon?
And one final thing ;) , I noticed that at certain times my boat would just stop in the water. My battery and fuel supplies were full but teh boat would just stop. When I attempted to set a course and speed, my nav guy would reply "Unable to Comply". Any thoughts here?
Thanks for your help. If anyone knows of a good resource (other than here) for codes, or config customizations that would help that would be great.
Sincerely,
Tim

Welcome to Subsim & SH3:up:
The manual will be in the documentation folder inside your SH3 Program folder. For what it's worth.
You can't jump directly to your patrol grid but you can go higher than 32. Be on the NAV map and crank the TC upto 1024. This is the max in stock SH3.
The red ! means that your men are fatigued. You need to swap them around with fresh crew members from the crew rooms. When transiting to your patrol grid, only have the minimum of crew on duty so that you have fresh men for when it counts.
"Unable to comply" this is because your crew in the engine room are to tired to maintain the engines. Again, replace with fresh crew.
As for getting cfg/code changes, you're are at the best resource right here at Subsim.:yep: There are many mods available here and most have been put into Supermod packages but for the time being, find your feet in stock SH3 and then look at a package to suit your playing style.
Have a look here for the list of modifications, apart from the engine code (which is not moddable without an SDK) there is no area of SH3 which has not been tweaked. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=78792

Welcome to the forums, Kaleun.
Far as I know you should have a .pdf manual under the Documentation folder in your Game Directory. Every queation you had (and countless others) are answered there.
But in quick reply: Can't jump to Nav points but you can compress time up tp 1024X.
A red ! means they are tired and you need to send them to the rest area for a few hours. Thats maybe possible the reason your boat stops working as well, if the engine compartment is manned by walking zombies.
As for configs and such - there is a SHIII Wiki but I cant remember the adress at the moment - somebody will post it shortly I'm sure.
EDIT: The short version: What danlisa said....

Welcome.............you can probably print the manual from the DVD. I also think F1 brings up a screen that has all the keyboard commands.
You can hit up TC to 1024 which makes time go by faster. Sometimes you will be out there and come across nothing for days.
When crew member start getting a red !, they need to be rested. Just move them into a berthing compartment.
As far as the boat stopping and not doing anything, could be that you don't have enough crew in the diesel or electric engine compartment.
One last thing...........you need to download the GWX mod. Makes it a totally different game from the stock version.

I instructed my navigator to follow the new course and headed out Flank Speed.
Welcome aboard, CaptFarrell!:D
And in addition to danlisa's reply you should not always run at 'Flank Speed' unless you use the 'unlimited fuel' option. It reduces your amount of fuel way too fast so that you might not be able to return to base.
Generally it is good to run at '1/3 Ahead' which you can do by pressing '2' on your keyboard.
Happy hunting!:arrgh!:
Welcome aboard!
Good advice above. But if you cruise at flank, you'll run out of fuel before reaching your patrol area. Depending on what tyoe U-boat you have your cruising speed should be between 6-8 knots.
For tactics, and survival hints, you may wish to visit my website.
Wilkommen zum Subsim Herr Kaleun!
Take you time and don't try to rush into an attack. This is more a simulation than an arcarde style game and you need to make sure that your enemy cannot detect you otherwise you'll get hammered.
The advice above is good and there are plenty of people here who can help you through the first steps in becoming an uber Kaleun!

Wow!:p
I wish my software development forums were this fast! That was incredible. Great advice. Thank you all for your input.
Is there a way to adjust the fatigue level of your men? That is about the only thing I can think of that I would like to modify. There are plenty of other things I'm going to have to worry about without having to "Nancy" my boys out in the open waters.
Again, Thank you all for your advice.
I wonder if my boss will notice I've left for the day to play SHIII...:arrgh!:
Sincerely,
Tim

You can actually remove fatigue altogether, in two ways.
First, using the excellent standalone program SH3 Commander, you can read about it here - http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/software/products.html (http://www.users.on.net/%7Ejscones/software/products.html) Many kaleun's here will not leave port without it.
Secondly, if you are using Stock SH3 1.4b, there is a standalone cfg mod which will also remove the fatigue. I've just got to find it.:-?
Either way, it will allow you to compare and see which values you need to change if you wish to adjust the fatigue model.
BRB - Crew Vitamins Mod (aka No Fatigue) - http://www.mediafire.com/?4rljtvsmpts
If you plan to use the basic.cfg in the above link, I suggest getting JSGME (JScones Generic Mod Enabler) which you can get at the same site as SH3 Commander. JSGME allows you to enable/disable mods in an external GUI while maintaining the integrity of the original SH3 files.

SmokinTep had menitoned the GWX mod. I followed his link and quickly became overwhelmed by the amount of mods available. Very impressive.
Is there a single mod pak that contains some or all of these?
Are there special instructions on how to install these?
Should I be using the Mod Manager produced by JSCones for this purpose?
Thanks again.
I swear I feel a stomach illness coming on...
I gotta get home and hunt down some srap metal breakfast.

Click on my sig for the GWX homepage.;)
Read the manual while there, watch the movie while there, grab the files while there and have a look at some screenies.:rotfl:
There are several 'Supermod' packages available. GWX + Grey Wolves eXpansion / NYGM - Not Your Grandmother's Mod / WAC - War Ace Campaign.
All of these contain all the 'little' fixes that are available as single downloads.
Personally, I'm biased! GET GWX you won't regret it.:arrgh!:

Hehe now you are one of us...
you will be assimilated.
Resistance is futile.
GWX contains (IMHO) the best bits of the other mods out there, plus lots of stuff found elsewhere. Be warned - the difficulty in this mod is quite a bit higher than stock, you'll often see debates here about just how it compares to real life.
But as a starting point I can't reccommend you get GWX.
JSGME - yes, get it and use it to manage all your mods (except GWX - that has its own install).
I found SH3 in the bargain bin at a local shop nearly a year ago and found this community shortly afterwards. Everyone is very friendly and helpful, and there are lots of very active members. Everyone, pat yourself on the back. Without subsim, I probably would have gotten bored with SH3 by now. Without GWX thats a certainty.
And also, with crew fatigue - it only rises or falls if your time compression is 32x or below. Myself, I feel its a worthwhile aspect of the sim and I don't mod it out. Infact I wish it applied at higher TC as well...
Things get quite tense when you are being hammered by a DD and your crew are dead on their feet and you are playing musical chairs just to get enough awake crew at their stations and keep your boat functioning....

Welcome to Subsim, CaptFarrell! To re-iterate some of the comments in this thread - Subsim is the friendliest and most helpful forum you're likely to come across. Ask anything you like and someone will have a solution for you. You WILL be assimilated. The sim is totally addictive and immersive - as an example... I returned from my holiday in England at 03:00 Sunday after the worst flight home possible which included one aircraft grounded due to engine failure, one flight cancelled for no apparent reason and the replacement flight delayed by a further 3 hours. Because of the various flight screw-ups, we flew to RI via ATLANTA! Yet, at 03:30, after downloading the 3,000-odd holiday photographs we'd taken, I loaded-in SH3/GWX and finished the patrol I had been forced to interrupt when the taxi arrived to take us to the airport 2 weeks previously. Bagged an Ore Carrier too! Now - is today Monday or Tuesday? Sleeping really screws-up the memory. Back on patrol in 15mins. Enjoy what is left of your normal life, SH3 will take over the rest of it! :D

CaptFarrell welcome aboard :arrgh!:
I understand you obtained the game with the d/l version, I did the same thing it's fine there is a manual (stock) you can print out included. Speaking of manuals have a look through the Community manual for information and tips, what you might not see in the table of contents you can search for.
I highly recomend SH3Commander as well, it's an add on that gives you great options and better crew management. If you install it become familiar with 'rollback', a feature in Commander that helps prevent conflicts when and if you install mods. Speaking of mods there's more out there then just one supermod. I would suggest before you get into that try a few single missions and perhaps one carrer game in stock to know what your gaining / missing / want. To get your feet wet.
One more important thing, make sure your patched up with the correct update for the d/l version. http://www.mysh3.info/shiii/index.php/Update_Patches
To good hunting.
Welcome Aboard – Stay away from the lemonade (Benard made it)
In order to get the most out of this simulator, I would suggest you first watch the movie Das Boot and then follow that up with reading Iron Coffins and Torpedo Junction.
Das Boot – Gives you a visual of Submarine life and stress (Being depth charged).
Iron Coffins – Gives you a good understanding of how Uboats operated, the political scene in Germany and the knowledge that you’re going to die (late war).
Torpedo Junction – Gives you sometime to look forward to when the US enters the war.:arrgh!:

Is there a Community server out there that the game can connect to for Internet play with other users?
I can only imagine what that scene must look like with all of you out there cruising the oceans. Quite an impressive tasks force of u-boats I'm sure.
Can you hunt down other subs from other nations as well in this game? That would be challenging.

Welcome CaptFarrell (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=232609)!
Here is some friendly advice:
First, be picky about your targets. Neutrals, friendlies, and especially Hospital Ships are the best targets, because they don't shoot back, and they don't change direction when the spot you.
When attacking large warships like carriers, cruisers, and battleships, stay on the surface so that you can outrun them.
When attacking smaller warships like destroyers and corvettes, run at flank speed at periscope depth. A depth of 8 or 9 meters is optimum.
Avoid deep water. Attack in the shallowest water you can find. The English Channel is the best place place for that, although harbors all along the English coast are fine, especially ones like Scapa Flow and Loch Ewe. Try a daring daylight surfaced attack for maximum effect.
Ignore airplanes. They can't really hurt you. When your crew spots one, stay on the surface and don't change course or speed. That confuses them.
Now, just do the opposite of what I told you, and you'll do fine.

Actually, what Puster Bill says is not far from the truth in Stock SH3.:rotfl:j/k
Regards Internet MP, UBI maintains a server for online play, this is reachable from the Multiplayer option in the menu.
There is lobby/ingame text and you'll need it to find someone playing exactly the same setup as you. Having the same setup is a must as if you don't, you get CTD's.:dead:
There is a number of us (GWX Crew) who regulary play MP and we use Teamspeak as our meeting place and voice comms. However, as we definately have different installs to everyone else at the moment, there isn't much MP happening. But soon.
Yes, MP is great fun and is geared around some excellent purpose made MP Missions. Hehe, watch out for the homing torps.:damn:
Although there are AI subs (quite a few new ones coming in GWX 1.04:|\\, FYI, there are no AI subs in Stock SH3) they are either surfaced or submerged (due to limitations of coding, 'cos we don't have an SDK) and although they are sinkable and have damage models, you can imagine, finding a submerged AI sub can prove difficult, unless you are glued to the hydrohpone.
You can find further info about MP in the Multiplayer Sub Forum on this board.
