How are you supposed to finish war patrols etc if there is no place to re-fuel and you run out?

sit on the surface till your batteries recharge - this doesnt (but should) require fuel - so once your batteries are full then dive and motor until you must recharge again. Its time consuming but you dont have any other options. Unless you choose to hack the savefile.....

I understand what you are saying mate but when you are under a time restraint that would not be much help..Thanks for the answer tho...:D

For some reason or other the surface until your batteries recharge tactic only works some of the time. I don't know the reason for this. I suspect sometimes fuel is so low it doesn't show on the meter. If I am ever in that situation again I am going to dig into the save file and see if there is in fact some fuel left.

It's been posted that the best cruising surface speed is 10 knots. That should get you any place you need to be. You have to lay on the TC pretty heavy though.

Well, it looks like your only option is to change the savefile. Give yourself some fuel and get home. Then either select unlimited fuel next patrol - or plan ahead a little more. If you need help making a change in the savefile - just post and one of us will get you the answer. Or - if you have a charge in your batteries - save - change the savegame settings to unlimited batteries and then reload and motor home... then just change the realism setting back. This is probably the most "fair" as your renown will be figured with the limited battery setting off - so you will take a penalty. Count that as the chewing you got from the admiral for running outta gas, and you can play forward with a mostly clear conscience. Luck

If you take damage, it will hurt your fuel economy and lower your maximum cruising distance. I usually loose around 4000 nm off my 11000 nm range due to damage when attempting to sail home. It is a real pain to rely on the battery recharge trick. Is there any way to create a mod that puts a sub tender somewhere a little closer to Japan?

10 knots won't get you far in a S boat, though.

S boats are the only exception. 10 knots is the optimum range speed in the other boats.

Yes the key is to be very stingy with the fuel on the way out. Run on battieries alot (usually daybreak to sunset).

Later in the war it gets easier as some 'tenders' start to spring up.

ClayP - look in your "my documents" folder - you should see a folder tree set up like so: "My Documents\SH4\data\cfg". In there is a file called gameplaysettings.cfg - edit that with notepad and change either:
LimitedBatteries=true to LimitedBatteries=false
(For unlimited Batteries) or for unlimited fuel change
LimitedFuel=true to LimitedFuel=false

I dont know if the fuel edit will work if you are already out of fuel. Worth a try though.

If you change the battery state - consider also changing
LimitedO2=true to LimitedO2=false as well so you dont have to keep resurfacing just for air.....

Just save the file at that point - then reload SH4 from the desktop. Not sure if you could just reload the save file or not - probably would still work just reloading the save. Luck!

Tenders, around mid to late 42 for them.

One of the issues I have is ships take damage, and this damage can cause a loss of fuel. Skimping on fuel is of little help when the airplane attacks you because the air search radar dose not work. This happened to me, lost 1/2 my fuel. I just restarted from a save.
