Hello All,
I created and posted this PDF on ubisofts SHIV forums and thought I would share it here too! It's a ship recognition guide that has all the needed information for manually targeting enemy ships (without any math!!!)
The PDF is meant to be printed out on 5x8 cardstock.
If you have any questions, comments or corrections, please let me know!

Edit: Helps if I provide the link ;)

Thanks! Let me know if anyone has any feedback to make it better! (or any stories how it has helped!)
Here's a pic for the cover if you like (altered by you to be your reference, obviously):

Thanks! I will add that into the next version!
Some comments:
1) Kongo is with "K", not with "C"
2) You don't need to put the ruler for AOB below the table. You can already put the AOB values in the table directly (Though that causes more work because you have to do a table for each ship, but might be worth it) EDIT: Just noticed tables are different. Put the AOB directly then, no need for looking to the ruler
3) I would suggest placing the side silhouettes instead of the perspectived ones for recognition, as it helps making out many details that get obscured or overlapped with perspectived views.
Other from that, good work

Thanks for the observations. I will correct the spelling mistake (kinda suprised there is just one!)
I would like to remove the ruler but until I can come up (or find) the mathmatical formula to convert the percentages to the correct angle degrees itll have to stay. So if anyone knows of the math to convert it, please let me know! The AOB tables are specific to the ship (since they rely on the ships AOB ratio). Oh there is also a small known bug, Any percentage thats over 100% on the AOB table should be considered N/A because its a length/width ratio thats impossible. However I wasnt able to get excel to edit the percentages (without having to manually change them)
I too would like front and side perspectives. I understand the 3/4 is not ideal and would appreciate anyone willing to help with obtaining decent front and side views of the ships. If so, I would be more than happy to replace them.
Since the prototype version of this document has been so helpful to me (the first version didnt list the distance charts) I thought I would get it out as soon as possible even if it wasnt perfect (hey why break with tradition ;))
Thanks for your comments though and I will definately be making those changes when time allows!
Centred,
Nice Work! I believe the formula you are looking for is
AOB = ASIN(ARO/ARBEAM)
Where:
ARO=Aspect Ratio Observed (i.e. ticks in length observed divided by ticks in height)
ARBEAM=Aspect Ratio when observed from abeam (i.e total length divided by total height)
Depending upon your program the output might be in either degrees or radians. If it is in radians then multiply by 180/PI
Note: I made an excell spreadsheet to do this. The actual formula in excell is:
+DEGREES(ASIN(ARO/ARBEAM))
Hope this helps

BT

Hey, nice job! A manual targetting begginer like myself can actually guesstimate less now! I'm going to print this on A4 paper, 4 per sheet -- mainly because it occupies less space that way.
Ease of use idea: label the tables. I.e. write "horizontal divisions" along the top of the large table and "vertical div" along the left side of that same table. It's nothing once you get used to it but helps newbies.

PERFECT! Thanks for the input. Making use of formulas has been no problem but figuring out which one to use. Thats another deal entirely. This will save a lot of space on each page, which should hopefully allow me to put some labelling in ;)

Actually it is simply a Sine scale. You can get the results using your scientific calculator (Select view--->scientific) in Windows.

Yes if you have tables specific for each ship it gets very easy....put your point-finger in the bottom-left of the table...then go right as many marks as the scope shows (horizontal)...from that point go up as many marks as the scope shows (vertical) and just read the AOB
Very intuitive and easy to use
Hi. This thread is old but it contains a superb reference for man targeting, the Imperial Navy Ship Reccognition Manual with all the data you need for making a nice attack using full manual targeting!!!!!
New downloadlink: http://files.filefront.com/INSRM+3025cpdf/;9631085;/fileinfo.html
I have been using it extensively since I got it and with the new TM1.7 with the new optics its just a gem!!!:yeah:
I am currently trying to make a similar one for SHIII + adding the new ships to the manual coming with TM since it releives you from much work using the tables.
Examples:
FRONT:

One of the merchants:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f203/wp44/table2.jpg
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f203/wp44/Table1.jpg
I have only one question and that is:
In the tables for each vessel there is a C-dpeth and an I-depth. (second picture)
Now can anyone tell me what they stand for?
Cheers

P.S This thread should be moved to the Mod-section for sure!!!!!!!

I don't get the file when I try downloading. I get directed to the downloads general page with no link. Do I have to log in for this? If I do, filefront is stupid now, as it gives no clue as to what I need to do beyond clicking download now, which does not work. :88)

Someone should post this on the new SUBSIM downloads section. I for one would love to use this!
[EDIT] Just found this thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=117434 that contains the link http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=01905726 to the latest(?) version of the INSRM. WOOT!

my fault. Sorry.
I did a similar post at the "Mods" forum and the link is only there.
The file has been removed from filefront but I will upload again.
Have done som job on this now and found the way "centered75" did it.
Currently adding the new ships from TM1.7 + making a SHIII version of it.
I will include the speed estimation charts as well. The problem is the layout to make it as simple as possible. Excel combined with MS-word and then convert to pdf.... ta dam ta dam..lets see how was it?:know:
Take care

I have downloaded this twice and the .pdf file opens and then immediately closes. I tried downloading and saving it and then downloading and opening it with the same results. Anyone else having this problem? I scanned it-no issues there.

It looks nice, if I ever try to get the hang of manual targetting, it should prove to be very useful.

I just downloaded the pdf, and it works just fine for me.
I did notice when I went to download it, the default option was not 'save', it was set to 'open with Adobe Acrobat', so I had to manually select the option to 'save' the file.
Although I don't know if that is related to your problem or not.
My only suggestion, make sure Adobe Acrobat (or whatever pdf reading/opening program you might use) is up to date.

Administrator: Will you edit the first post and include the working links?
Post is rather confusing.
