View Full Version : Horror movies. Old Vs. New
Which one do you prefer? The old or the new horror movies? Which scares you the most?
I myself prefer the older ones, John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors in the horror genre. By old, I mean in my case 1970-89; Halloweens, The Exorcist, The Fog, The Thing, Cannibal Holocaust (Well.. I think it's more of a splatter than horror).
The new movies are IMO too much special FX driven and my advice would be for the movie makers to tone them down a bit. Especially if they use it to make ghosts, monsters etc. I have yet see a movie where the special FX character looks anywhere near natural. Also, what's up with all the child bad guys? Ring, Grudge etc.
Also, the music isnt as scary in the new flicks than it was in the older ones.

I must say I prefer the older ones, though some of them were quite cheesy. While there are some cracking modern horror films out there some of them are too reliant on CGI trickery and don't get the story across properly. Also you're right about the music there is something about the synth music of the late '70s early '80s that gives atmosphere to the films.

Don't leave out Alien. Far scarier than it's sequels. ;)

For someone who was brought up on the movies from the '30s, '40s and '50s, what you call old is what I call new. I consider most of those to be schlock, though to be honest I'm not really into horror anyway.
I liked the new version of The Mummy, but I consider that to be more '30s-style pulp than horror.

I think the original "The Exorcist" is still the scariest movie ever.
I definitely give props to "The Blair Witch Project" for doing a lot with just a little.
The first "Friday the 13th", where the mother is the killer, I also liked .

The 1980s' remake of "The Thing" with Kurt Russel, hands down.

Is there any horror film right now that isnt the remake of either an old one or a japanese horror film?

Toy story is probably one of the most frightening films I have ever seen.
Not really into the horror genre that much personally, I do have a few on vids and DVDs, things like Alien (big fan of that series, I even own some props from the second movie) and The Thing.
You could regard Alien as an old one nowadays, since the original one is nearly 28 years old of course.
I'm also a fan of the more jokey-style ones from Sam Raimi, most notably the last two in the 'Evil Dead' series, which were both definitely played for laughs.
As far as modern horror flicks go, I'd probably not bother crossing the street to see one, but the old Hammer ones with Vincent Price, Cushing and Lee will usually watching if I happen across one, mainly because I'm a Vincent Price fan.
Chock
You know, I disagree with this "old vs. new" stuff...there was schlock made in the old days and some classics made today. I am not really into horror myself though.

Older were better. Nowadays it seems to be just 'let's hunt a bunch of teens the most frightening and violent way possible'. Final Destination was just gross, not spooky. Psycho, on the other hand... I barely dared leave my window open at night:o.
I definitely give props to "The Blair Witch Project" for doing a lot with just a little.True, Blair Witch Project was creepy as Heck. Not all new horror movies are terrible.
This is not a complain, but I like both oldies and some of the new, so it should be a third option.

Welcome:up: Dread Knot
The Exorcist was a classic.
When I was much younger remember seeing Salem's Lot, being pretty scared, although it seems a little lame now. Would love to see it re-made.
