View Full Version : Pacific Theater of War 3
By Koei . . . has anyone played it . . . never got to as I didn't own a PS3 . . . was it any good?
Sorry I meant P.T.O IV . . . as P.T.O. III never came out in the US.
I use to spend hours on end playing P.T.O and P.T.O. II on the SNES . . . and it brings back great TBS memories of High School

KOEI did a nice job of modeling just about every ship in existance in WW2,but there is no ground combat at all. You take areas by bombing and bombarding air bases till you knock them out. And the ship pathing leaves a bit to be desired. Try turning your fleet around and you get a jumbled up mess...*lol*
It's just a totally different game from PTO1 and 2. I guess calling it "simplified" would be close to the mark. Looks nice though.

I think PTO2 was the last game made for the PC from Koei.
I always looked for a newer one but they went over to the
kiddie machines. One feature I loved about PTO2 was the
monthly meeting with you and the other leaders shaping
policy for the next month. I have NEVER seen another game
do that. Interaction between the player and other AI leaders
or commanders is something I would like to see in a future game
made by anyone....

PTO IV and the Warship Commander series were only released in the West on the PS2 but in Japan the PC has versions of those games along with PTO III. Unfortunately the PC versions will apparently not run on western versions of Windows and are not translated. A bit daft really since these games would probably have sold better on the PC than the PS2.

Actualy you can get Japanese games to run on western computers fairly easily, just need to either change the regional settings to Japanese settings (and add the east asia language support pack) or run it with AppLocale (set to japanese).
A few of my friends are into importing Japanese games (since they put out alot of games that never see the light of day outside of Japan). Its an expensive hobby though and to understand the game you realy need to be able to read Kanji.
To bad Koei doesn't release anything in the states anymore . . . that is anything like they use to . . . I mean there is their Dynasty Warrior line . . . but we aren't here to play as chinese warlords on horseback.

There is a new game called pacific storm. it is obvious that the developers are quite influenced by the structue of PTO2, however, there is no monthly conference implemented which is a major loss. The very fascinating feature was that in PTO2.
The game also boges down the player with over detail and they have surely failed to create the very athmosphere of the PTO2.
I have to mention the PTO2 is released in 1995 and only 18Mbs. since then (12 years no better game has released in the genre)
