I never upload anything anyways, more of a downloader. Shame the fastest I can ever get is 1.4 mb/s from FileFront. Everywhere else is slower than that. Downloading things off of Steam I get ~150 kb/s, odd.

nope... but i know the next fastest thing... a friend of mine had this exprimental modem, it used a satelitte dish which was connected to the modem and computer via a fiber optic cable, he was downloading at 40 mb/s and he had it for 4 months because his father's friend was working for cisco systems (network products company etc..) and he was givin this setup to test to see how good it was... he was downloading 700mb movies in 30 min..... my friend told me it wont be available to pulic until at least 3-5 years..he said military and government are gonna get em first in 2008...

Consider this!
If we have no limits on sig dimensions & file size, then eventually our 'high speed' broadband will perform as well as 56k.
No thank you.
Example: If there was a topic with 10 members each with a sig like Elite's, that's a total of 22mb to be downloaded.:dead:

I know this thread is quite old, but I was wondering how internet speeds might have changed since 2007. From my university I am currently getting this:
http://a.imageshack.us/img830/2016/speedtestr.jpg
This is the fastest I've seen it since I've been here but this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BliwZ9OCWzc) shows that it can be much faster. 608 Mbps is just insane.
So how do internet speeds stack up nowadays?
Jimbuna
08-21-10, 01:44 AM
I think a truer/better picture is gained by posting home connections because not everyone has access to large/fast systems in universities and business circles.
For the record I've recently scaled back my connection to 10MB in favour of receiving every Sky channel in the UK...plenty fast enough for my current needs.
I agree with you, jim, but this is all I've got right now so I figured I would post it because the speeds are pretty lucrative.

Must beg to differ....with Virgin you have the option to go to 50MB (which I was formerly on), cheaper phone calls and over 250+ tv channels.
I challenged BT 3 months back to at least equal the offer and they were honest enough to say they couldn't.

That's worth 30 bucks here(US$30.00) and when the average office employee gets paid 300-500 bucks a month that's a lot :damn:
Curiously the performance degrades significantly past afternoon to early morning. But I've realized that my COMODO firewall contributes to that to some effect because while I was using another firewall I had quite a bit better performance all throughout the day.

when I have the time I'm going to change to someone better, as my current service with an older pipex package is £23.99 a month for what's listed above.

lol I did quite some time back.
Then because of issues over telephone account+ex had to get new internet again. With the same company as before, but on a different package from ADSL24/murphx solutions, C&W LLU adsl2+ doodad.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/923317085.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
I've had better out of them, but I'd say this is about average, with the weak link being the wire from the house to the BT telephone exchange (afer which it's c&w network, as I understand it).
£19.49 a month for uncapped service with a 30 day rolling contract, so I can quit any time I want. There are cheaper, but I don't like 12-18 month contracts from isp's.

I thought Germany was announcing that they were going to make 10Mbps internet speed standard.
btw I win because I live in a third world LOL well officially it's developing country but our govt has been at work hard real hard to deindustrialize the whole country even faster. It's very difficult to fail here considering all the natural resources and the oceanic wealth so I must assume with all logic that it's the government doing to go there even faster. But I must trust my govt that they see the bigger picture in all this. Must be some tricky strategic planning.

But as I said, I didn't really notice any difference so far, so maybe the testserver was just overloaded the first time. I can't explain the drastic difference in results in any other way.
*edit*
I might have used an "internet speed optimization tool" a few years ago with my Win Xp. Since it was already a couple of years old it might have not been compatible with high speed DSL. But since that is more than three years ago I don't know for sure anymore.
I just wanted to say that I don't think it is a native Win XP problem.

One habit in my country is to privatize state corporations that are having difficulties to foreign parties. There's now even talks of privatizing the management of the airport to foreigners.
I'm beginning to have a deep deep understanding. What we actually need to privatize to foreign parties is the govt itself :damn:. LOL
Obama would be free after two terms right.
or that Jimmy Carter still looks healthy
or Mr Clinton himself
or maybe Thaksin?
Too bad they killed Benazir Bhutto . . .first incident should be a clear indication that Pakistan was under the grip of a dictator then.

Test result with international servers vary though according to time of day at least while I'm using COMODO internet security. The above tests were done at 6.35 AM with Comodo Internet Security running. Tests usually degrade in performance towards afternoon before becoming excellent again at night(6PM and later) and streaming(Youtube) is worst affected when it's at its worst especially if I'm using COMODO Internet Security. Weird thing is download is usually stable at a little more than 180kB/s(~1.5Mbps) so while I might not be able to stream youtube at those hours smoothly I could download them much faster almost at full speed. . . .Speed seems to be much more stable and faster throughout the day when I used Outpost Firewall instead of COMODO Internet Security however.
