ok. My computer recently broke in a weird way. My main drive for games (D with 100g)
Just disipeared form explorer because it was junked up with spam and all so we had to format i and I decided to reinstall windos to fix all the problms. Before that Silent hunter four ran perfectly fine. Now I installed it on vista and problems came. Ok first time I installed it was fine but when I went to run it it said somthing about a file (cant remember name) with a .dll extention was not found. So I reninstalled tried again same problem. So I thought ok somthings wrong but mabey I can run it from my DVD drive so I clicked on it in explorer on vista and guess what? The game was installed but when the DVD thing poped up the install option was still there but play wasn't. So i looked at the problem. I typed silent hunter 4 and then that file (copyed and pasted) and searched. Some silent hunter form possibly this came up and said somthing about direct x 10 not working with silent hunter 4 and to reinstall direct x 9 so i did. ON the DVD thing play was still not there and install was (still the same) but the short cut to silent hunter worked. I ran it went to the carrer made one hit ok (to create it) and the screen went black. 1 sec. later somthing came up from vista that said silent hunter 4 (the the romen symbols) stoped working and it was looking for a fix online. It found nothing and when I hit ok it closed. I tried again same problem. Obviously somthings wrong because of the DVD thing with play not being there and install being there when its already installed. the first time i tried it I used the patches but the seccond time (after looking into the .dll problem) I didin't update. I doubt thats the problem. It ran fine on XP and on the box it says it works for vista. Please help!!!:nope::shifty::damn::damn::damn:

Welcome:up: oblivioncth,

Quite a few people here run SH4 on Vista, I am not one of them. Did a quick search, there are quite a few threads on this, did not see a definitive answer for you though.

Somebody will get to this.

I Have Been Using Vista For 3 Months Now. No Problems, Except
Sometimes Game Does Freeze Up. All Save Game During Career Mode.
So You Can Go Back Before The Crash Or Being Sunk By Dc.

The way I fixed the problem (for anyone that has the same) Even if you have direct X 10 aperently it dosent matter.

1.Unistall the game.
2.Install Direct X 9
3.Restart your computer (dont be like, oh thats only a mabey. I wont restart. NO!!
you must restart.
4.Install The game
5.Restart again (YES YOU HAVE TO!)
6.Should now work:p

If it didn't you problem is differn't than mine and:

I have had VISTA for about 9 months...works just fine with SH4. It's just the easiest excuse to use these days when something goes Belly-Up with any Game/Application.

My recommendation is for you to go back to Square One with a totally clean Re-install, to include clearing your registry of "Crap".

In this link, in my first Post, you'll find a procedure for doing so if you choose to give it a try: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132843

Good Luck and let us know how things develop.

P.S. As you will see in my post/procedure, I agree with Oblivioncth that you always should re-boot between each 'installation'/"patch"...it only takes a few extra minutes...

That right there does not bode well at all... hard drives tend not to simply disappear from Windows... being "clogged up" won't do it, either. If Windows no longer recognized the drive, i.e. you cannot access it from Explorer, from the command line, and it no longer shows up in the device manager, odds are the drive itself is failing. Could also be a motherboard failure. You could also get lucky with a loose cable.

Checking out the System Event Log in the Control Panel (Under "Classic View" -> "Administrative Tools" -> "Event Viewer") should give you some verification of this. Click on "Windows Logs", then "System", and scroll down the window that says something like "System xx,xxx Events"... you'd look for a red warning symbol or yellow, from source "disk", complaining about the controller or a failed read/write. Or for that matter, bad blocks.

I have to disagree with the not "good for gaming part". I've had Vista for over a year and I've had no problems whatsoever. (except for itunes when I first got it) I have two machines, one with XP, and FSX runs quiet a bit better on Vista than it does on XP. Something to do with the auto-gen scenery I think:-?.

Running on Vista Home Premium - games crashed twice but apart from that all OK except for sound (realtek) human voice too faint, even with speaker volume up.
