Okay, if you noticed my topic in the SH4 forum then you know some of the back story.

I've been away from SH3 for about a year (busy, etc.)

I recently got SH4 as a gift and am about to upgrade my PC again. Meanwhile my son is playing SH4 and that got me thinking about SH3. I'm about halfway through my career.

Several people recommended that I add GWX to my setup. However, I can't seem to do it.

When I try to install it complains and says that I don't have a valid 1.4b version.

First, why would it care? Second, I do own it but I think I'm at 1.4 (so says the readme still in the core folder). Third, I most likely patched it at some point as I despise being told I need a disk to play games I own (which is why I also bought Game Jackal but that doesn't work with SH3 either).

So, I replaced the .exe with the backup of the original and GWX still complained.

I then downloaded the 1.4b patch and tried to apply it and it complained that my maps.cfg file wasn't valid (it's just a text file).

So now I'm not sure what to do. I'd like to get back into playing but don't want to have to re-install everything from scratch and certainly don't want to lose my career. If it comes to those I'd rather just skip it and wait until I get around to SH4.

Ideas?

Oh, the only "mod" I believe I ever added was something to change the crew management from the default to longer hours so that you didn't have to change them so often. Not even sure where to find those changes.

Upon exiting I find I have a text file on the desktop telling me GWX failed Test 5. Time to search for that one.

Trust me, it is worth the pain you are going through trying to install it. Lets move this one up a bit, somebody will get you up and running I am sure.

The installer is functioning as designed. It is supposed to "complain" if you didn't follow installation directions. Many software installers for other games/mods do the same thing to prevent user support nighmares. It protects both you and us from chasing down erroneous problem reports later.

Your previous career(s) will not be compatible with GWX.

GWX modifies well over 2000 files, which is why a CLEAN installation of SH3 version 1.4b is required to install it.

You will need to uninstall everything that you are able to with the SH3 disk, followed by deleting all residual files in your "SilentHunterIII" folder... as well as deleting or re-naming "My Documents/SH3."

You can review installation issues prior to doing so, by downloading the GWX manual here: http://isaf.us/gwx/GWX_MANUAL_EN_PF.pdf

Game-cracks or peripherally related matters are not open for discussion at Subsim.

Test 5 is a validation check of your selected install. If it is the only failed test, then it means that you have an installation of SH3 v1.4b which has been modified in such as way that may create problems or conflicts were GWX installed over the top of it.

Do as the Kpt suggests - much easier than trying to remember what modifications you made.
