View Full Version : SH3/GWX on a Notebook?

Having just got a new Toshiba (U200 - 10D) I thought I'd see if it would run SH3 okay.
And the answer was yes after a fashion, except...
1. Graphics were obviously not so good as it only has on-board Intel 945, but it was playable.
2. The display is widescreen so the image was slightly stretched.
3. It got a bit hot! I only installed SH3 not GWX just to try it out, and after say 15 minutes in the Type XXI mission where you get to sink a couple of carriers (nice), the Toshiba seemed to be kicking out a lot of heat.
So I'm wondering whether I should go ahead and get GWX on (not much point in just having SH3 IMO) as I know it'll stress things a lot more? If I do, I assume there are workarounds which others have used to get the display right and lower the load?
Any thoughts appreciated!

I used too a laptop when my desk PC was on repair.
The display problem can be solved if you have an Nvidia graphic card. If you have an ATI card  like mine, there is no solution  . I don't know about the Intel card. You should check the optrions it has.
For the problem of heath I keep the laptop one cm above the table (by putting something at its four corners) to have better air circulation. Last summer I even used a table air fan to help cooling.
Anyway these laptops should have some type of protection in case of heath (mine slows down the CPU to keep temperature down).
After all, SH3+GWX is playable on my laptop that is about 1.5 years old (HP, 1800 Mhz CPU, 512 GB Ram, ATI Mobility Radeon X600) so you should have no problem with yours, that is newer, though with an onboard graphic card.

Thanks Maraz
Yes, the weak link is the graphics but I think I can adjust to fit at lower than optimum resolution.
Otherwise the CPU (Core 2 duo T7200) and 2GB of fast RAM are fine.
As my main SH3 platform is my desktop I guess it's no big deal...
GWX runs fine on Das Notebook. Elevate it with a cooler pad and you'll be blown to pieces in no time!

I run it on a laptop also. I have a targus fan pad I use under the laptop to assist in keeping it cool.
I also have found that it runs cooler with GWX 1.03

Sony Vaio VGN SZ360P notebook with dual core, 2 Gigs of RAM and an nVidia graphics card built in... GWX runs very well indeed for the most part.... However, SHIII shows off it's weakly optimized engine with the typical slow down in frame rates per second (and very noticebaly so) when encountering multiple contacts in bad weather, or when dealing with large convoys, etc. etc. With the way the program seems to have been written, I don't think that there's ANY computer hardware out there that can run the game smoothly 100% of the time (specialy when you consider that my computer came out quite some time AFTER SHIII, meaning that it represents technology beyond that which was available when SHIII was first sold)
As an interesting side note, my nVidia video card can be turned off to preserve power and help the computer run cooler, at which time it reverts to standard on-board intel video technology... One time I forgot to turn it back on before launching SHIII; well, the game did run, but was very laggy, and strangely enough, the watchmen on the bridge sported invisible binoculars. So expect a few strange graphical quirks with generic video cards.

True, it is possible to play on the laptop( I have SH3+GWX on mine)
Everything depends on the graphics and ammount of memory, especially on higher TC.
But to answer the original question: your machine wont be more stressed after you install GWX with one exception - there is WAY MORE traffic in ports so on low spec laptop leaving the port might take you quite some time as it will be slow and extremly laggy.
Hope that helps

Thanks guys! Will check out these fan pads...
Perhaps a quick test is in order this evening :hmm:

Not quite.
Everything in normal compression rates (below x32) is related with Graphics Card, above that level it is up to your CPU power(+little bit RAM) .
I have an HP Notebook, with Nvidia 7400TC, it runs very well, except the conditions stated before;
- Convoys spotted
- High TC rates (like x2000 and above) and especially high TC in bad weather (like x1000 and above)
- Smoking effects when nearby of hit ships (especially u use hi-res smoke mod like me)

If leaving harbor is too slow, activate the light (lite) harbor traffic mod and this will solve the problem. Of course the 16 Km atmospheric mod is out of the question.
