View Full Version : A Dramatic Rescue in the South China Sea
A very good story I only wish it was longer.
Forced to dive by enemy aircraft, Barb watched helplessly while Tunny, nearby on the surface, was bombed as she attempted to escape by diving. Tunny barely survived this attack, and had to return to port with serious hull and torpedo tube damage. It was obvious by now that Japanese bombers were using a new tactic. Equipped with radar, they could attack by day or night, and Barb’s preferred method of searching for targets while running on the surface was becoming very dangerous.

Great story!!! Here's the story I found about the USS Blenny (SS-324)
The USS Cod had put a boarding party aboard a fishing junk and while the party was aboard, a plane straffed the sub forcing it to dive. By the time they were able to surface, they had lost the junk with her crew on it!!! They put out an APB with their wolf pack mates with a description of the junk.
Turns out the USS Blenny found the junk and was able to rescue the crew. They meet up with the Cod to give the crew back to her. : ) After being on the Junk for 3 days, the crew was very happy to be "home."

Longam, that was a great story. Thanks for the link.:sunny:
Kikn79, I've read several rescue stories, but I'd never heard of that one. It's great! Thanks for that.

I have a box set of videos that I ordered from The History Channel, called:The Color Of War. It is all real color footage of WWII. Anyway, one of the episodes is entitled:Silent And Deep. All color footage of US Sub operations in the Pacific. The story of the Blenny was just one of the highlites of the film. Showed the actual return of the stranded crewmen back to the Cod, all in real color!

That is correct!
The return of Cod's crewmembers is nicely filmed in color.
On that same patrol (7th) the Cod rescued the crew of the stranded dutch submarine O-19. Three days the Cod had 50 extra guests on board, making the total a stunning 156!
