OK, OK.
I have to cop to a few minor charges here.
I still don't have GWX. *ducks, covers*
I want GWX. I have seen paradise in so many screenies that I feel like I can almost taste the salt water and diesel exhaust, but fortunately, not the stale sweat and fear... or Bernard's cooking, for that matter.
But I've been a little gunshy of getting it, largely due to the fact that this computer, well... liken it to a Type IIA... in 1944.
Now, I can run SHIII with little trouble, other than long(ish) load times. 128MB video, 512 system RAM, P4 2.8Ghz.
The question is, based on the experience of the GWX devs and crews: Is it worth trying out, knowing that while I'm still recovering from an accident, therefore not working, and therefore unable to upgrade/replace this system? Or would I just be needlessly frustrating myself by putting nirvana just that much closer, but still out of reach?
Oh, and BTW - those with a Safeway store nearby - just found Director's Cut of Das Boot for 9.99 at the Safeway near me. :D

Well my system as is has a lot slower processor than yours - 1.79Ghz
Same memory and graphics
Did struggle on 512mb ram TBH - was better on 1Gb
I would suggest if you can get another half Gb of ram at least - 1Gb would be better
Graphics arent the best on a 128mb card but no different to stock in my experience
I have always lowered the particles to make it smoother
Speaking from experience only, I would never go back to the original. What SH3 did to make a great subsim, gwx made it into the greatest subsim.
I havent given the other mods a chance though, so a little research in what youre looking for might help.
But gwx is awesome. You should read the manual that comes with gwx. They covered everything. From sounds to harbor traffic.
just remember to follow the instructions.
1. download all the files and the bin files to your desktop... dont forget the patch gwx1.03.
2. create a folder, mine's called GWX, and place all of those files inside of that folder.
3. run the main gxw file and you should be set.
4. then run the patch file, 1.03
5. ta-da! now you dont have to click on the SH3 icon, there will be a gwx sh3 icon created and you can click on that from now on.
I also went ahead and got the SH3 Commander because it goes very well in crew management and other things like time in base, tweeking you time compression levels, having the hull integrity back on the crew screen, and more such as the night club.
I really think its awesome.

I run GWX just fine (well, not 'fine', but playably) with a system very similar to yours, Growler, except for a much slower processor. You should be okay.
Don't worry Growler, although a 512extra Ram to make it a Gig wouldn't hurt... :hmm:
My Radeoncard has 128 MB as well, and my chip can run 1.8 Ghz at max. So there you go...
My advice is to get to extra memory and you'll be fine :know: (Unless you're planning an motherboard etc... upgrade soon - wich means my Gig of DDR1 is useless, sigh, it's all DDR2 now, ooooo.. grrrr....but that's another matter :-?).
And you might want to keep an eye out for the Light Harbor Traffic GWX-submod... it's included in the GWX download I think. Makes harbors somewhat less laggy, that's the only thing that makes my pc do hickups where GWX is concerned. On the open seas you'll be fine! Gute Jagt!

Vielen danke!
Heading to the GWX d/l depot as we speak.
Thanks again, guys. Appreciate the feedback.
I knew I was in trouble RAM wise when I started playing BF2, so that's really no surprise there. [sigh] Out-of-the-box, SHIII was pretty swell; GWX looks like I'll finally be getting out of training and into the war.

No disrespect to kaleun Avatar :nope:
Try installing the game from these instructions and in particular SH3 Cmdr will work properly/as it was meant to
1. Uninstall SH3 via Windows' "Add/Remove programs"
2. Open Windows Explorer and:
- *delete* the folder where you had installed SH3
- *delete* the \My Documents\SH3 folder
3. Reinstall SH3
4. If your SH3 did not come with patch v1.4b already included, install patch v1.4b. Ensure you install the patch that corresponds to your copy of SH3 (Download/DVD/EMEA/US)
5. OPTIONAL: Copy and paste this "clean" install as a backup to avoid the need to follow steps 1-3 if your game becomes corrupt in future
6. Visit the GWX homepage (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/) and download into the SAME folder GWX.exe and the five .bin files. While there grab the v1.03 patch
7. Run GWX.exe and follow the installation prompts
8. Run GWX103.exe and follow the installation prompts
9. SH3 COMMANDER USERS: Visit the GWX homepage (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/) and download the GWX 1.02+ Cfg files for SH3 Commander and unzip the contents DIRECTLY into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder.
5. OPTIONAL: Copy and paste this "clean" install as a backup to avoid the need to follow steps 1-3 if your game becomes corrupt in future
Don't skip this! There will be a moment that you're glad you did it...

I just downloaded GWX. It says I need to put it on a clean patched install. The only mods I have installed on my SH3 are a draggable nomo and pato's bearing overlay tool. Do you think I really need to get rid of these first?

Mr. Growler,
Don't make the same mistake I did. I waited and waited before I downloaded gwx. Big mistake. Get GWX!!! Add memory to your computer ... safe. Get a video card with 256 memory, plenty of watts and your set.
Again,
thanks to everybody involved in this mod.

Welcome to Subsim Evil Genius. Here is your potato peeler. Fritz is waiting for you in the galley... and since it is Tuesday... IT IS ONION DAY!!! Aren't you lucky! :arrgh!:
May your stay be a long one. (At Subsim... not the galley.)
I really hate it when things get choopy too.;)

I'm just glad my onion-chooping and potato-peeling days are behind me now.
No, it looks like I'm a loader now.
I've never lifted an 88 shell before, or a 105 for that matter, but I don't imagine it could be much harder than holding up the 55lb practice slugs aboard Taney. ;)

Thanks Kpt. Lehmann
Oh boy onions!!! I love how they make me cry..:dead:
Just hope that the tears dont drop onto the new computer I am building which is a AMD 64 X2 6000+ 3Ghz, Geforce 7900 256MB SLI, 2GB DDR2 Ram, computer:rock:
And of course SH3+GWX will be the first thing that goes on after the PC is set up.Mawhahah
And choopy would probably be more accurate, kind of like trying to chop meat up but having to saw the bones that are to thick. Anyway I would rather have to peel potatoes or chop onions than go back

OK, last thing before I sleep, then tomorrow I sail!
There are three files listed on the GWX d/l page for the excellent SH3 Commander utility. Question 1: The cfg files go in the cfg folder (duh)... but the existing cfg files from the old SH3 install... do I need them there, also, or should I back 'em up and remove those files only from the cfg folder?
Question two: The other two files for SH3 Commander... the skins pack and the random data offset: Where do I need to drop these? That's the only thing that I didn't find on the GWX site (Maybe I should RTFM again?)
Thanks again!

In answer to your first question, you can just leave your existing SH3 cfg files from your base installation alone, as they will be overwritten as necessary by SH3 Cmdr.
One of us will have to get back with you on your second question.

Found it in the skinpack readme.
To install you will need to unzip and copy all files into your \SH3 Commander\Date\ folder. When you launch SHIII from SH3 Commander the appropriate skins for your patrol date will be copied into your SHIII installation. See the SH3 Commander documentation for more information on installing and using this skin pack. Due to the large number of skins being replaced you can expect SH3 Commander to take several minutes to copy the files into the SHIII folders. You will not be able to view paint schemes changing with time by browsing the dates in the museum, in SHIII this only shows changes in weapons loadout. To view skins for a different date you will need to exit SHIII and launch the game from SH3 Commander for that date.
For those with not so fast pc's like me, there was also another way to make SH3/GWX run far more smoothly.
Can't remember the thread though... :-?
I do know it meant loading Windows into RAM so everything else is totally dedicated to GWX. It did improve the performance quite a bit.

Gentlemen and ladies.
Where does one begin with a letter or praise?
To the entire GWX devcrew... you all have done an outstanding job turning a good sim into a simply phenomenal one.
SHIII finally has some "life" to it! Had to run the game once to set up the main.cfg file for SH3 ommander, so I took 'er out for a quick cruise.
Left Kiel in Sep 39 in a VIIB, at night. Screwed up the Kiel Canal routing, so I just puttered around a bit until I could get SH3 Commander sorted (which I have now, thanks to the above info from that Extraordinary Gentlemen himself, Herr Lehmann). Load times were a bit longish, but we already determined that would be the case, given my system's limitations. But well worth the wait! Merchants from many nations in the German harbor - as there would be, rather than the ghost harbors we've seen in stock. Fishermen gathered together in a general area, out of the shipping channel - as there would be! Aircraft patrolling overhead... a nice touch! Graf Zeppelin nearby at dockside... wow.
Lights on in the city, on the ships... this was 0100 or 1 Sep 39 - the last moments of peace in the old world, with the gravity of what would soon be happening in Poland still conjecture.
Gentlemen, simply astounding - and I've not even gone to sea yet! Trust me, there's a six pack waiting for each of you, should you make it to my neck of the woods. (Well, for those who're old enough, anyway.)
Now, enough of my prattle. I've got a ship to prep!
Thanks again, all of you, for your work, and all of your help. It is sincerely, and greatly, appreciated.

Good on yer Growler!
my suggestion, check out Poland first :D,
give the crew a shakedown cruise and a little target practice near Gdynia.
Then if you feel like challenging GWX go through Der Kanal toward your patrol area. be early about it though or it might be a little TOO challenging :-?
Oh and do please report any errors you make based on earlier stock experience, preferably humorous fatal ones :D
My worst mistake was taking on an armed trawler with my deckgun in a type IX and getting my rudder blown off with the first shell:nope: that got me very thoroughly sunk

I am in the process of downloading the GWX files right now, and after reading so much about it, I can't wait to get to punchin' holes in the ocean. Thanks in advance to all those who made the Mod possible, I know how much hard work was involved.
I am running a Frankenstein PC, 1.6g p4, 512ram, 128mb geforce 3 ti200, so I know I will have the slow loads, and slow harbor effect, but I am not worried, as long as I can function out at sea.
I have been playing the stock SH3 for about 10 months, and thoroughly enjoying it, but I am anxious to see the new world of GWx.
Thanks for all the tips here, will save me lots of time trying to install everything properly.
