View Full Version : Convoy Stops while escorts attack
This happened to me sunday (6/10). I was on patrol in the East China Sea, when I pick up a convoy on my radar. I was to close to get in a good position to fire torpedoes. So I race further ahead at Flank speed and angle my course to get in front of the convoy and went down to about 200'. The escorts detected me an ran a few depth charge runs with no effect. Two of the escorts circled around me as I waited for the convoy to get to me before I going to periscope depth. Long story shortened, I sat there for and hour and no convoy.
I went to external view camera, several times, and looked at the convoy, about 7000-8000 yds away, just sitting there with no movement at all.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Known bug or a feature? They kind of sit there waiting to get hammered. Does make for boring play after a while. This issue is being addressed in 1.3. Check out the stickied bug thread for what we are asking to have fixed.
Thanks, I guess I should have looked further before posting. I will try to remember that in the future.
Thanks again
Since the engine power fix for merchies, I don't really get this bug anymore in 1.2!!!
I did, and I hated it, but for me it's gone now.. try the engine power mod, have a look in the mod forums...
Only time they slow now, is when the leader is damaged and slows but doesn't sink.

SteamWake, read it again! I assumed (and I think you did too) that he was talking about the bug where the whole convoy stops dead when the leader is taken out.
But after re-reading, the OP specifically said he did not have a good firing position and disengaged to get ahead and manuever for a more favorable position.
Sounds like he didn't fire a single fish and yet the convoy stopped anyway? I've never seen that behavior, don't think I've heard of it either. Only heard of this if the lead ship is sunk and convoy's stopped while apparently voting for the next leader (which is the essence of the bug, right?)

maybe it is engine power bug
or
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=115105
see fix by "Yanaran" ... could be that there are errors like that in other late war campaigns...

Meh... convoys slamming on the brakes when a sub threat is 'detected' is just ludicris. I dont know what they actually did in reality but my first instinct would be to go to flank on an erratic course away from the threat.
Wether or not he got off a shot he was detected and the convoy 'stopped'.

Put yourself in the merchant captains place. You have a ship with NO guns
or DCs. Your top speed is 12 kts. You know an enemy sub has been detected and is submerged out there somewhere. What do you do?
1. You can outrun it submerged but not surfaced.
2. You don't know where it is.
Options: Turning and varying your speed is the ONLY thing you can do.
Not too reassuring, is it....

I would find it more reassuring than comming to a dead stop.

Yeah, exactly! Strange, I've never seen that happen. I've been detected before on my approach and had to crash-dive and disengage, evade the DD's and do an end-around to get back in position for another go, and I've never seen the convoy stop unless I've sunk one of the big boys. They always maintain course and 9-12 kts if I don't hit or sink anything. So what the OP describes is new to me...
Don't know anything about the internal workings of SH4, but I wonder if the OP's convoy arrived at the end of its "script" at just that time and so with no further waypoints just stopped?
DH
There is a known bug where certain convoys have very slow speeds (1 knot) scripted into some of their waypoints. This can LOOK like they stopped just because you thought you were sighted but you actually may have intercepted them near the time they hit one of these waypoints.

I did not fire any torpedoes. The ships were stopped, everytime I did the external view they were in the same positions. The 2 escorts that were depth charging me never got very close to me. One of the escorts even stopped at an 8 o'clock position from me and waited for me for about a half hour before he moved again. The other escort kept circling me waiting for me to do something.
I have never heard of a convoy stopping because of a sub contact, you are just asking to get yourself sunk if you do.
Also, this was in the middle of the East China Sea, no where close to a port.

Hrm very curious. I can see it now... "Everyone stop ! Lets see if we cant hear the bastard !"
The one DD stopping (listening) while the other prosecutes is a classic tactic.
