View Full Version : Force gun crew to my target?

I find it really frustrating when I surface near a convoy and my gun crew starts targetting the freighters instead of the destroyers, even when I have got a destroyer as a locked target. Is there a way to force them to target what I am looking at or otherwise select their target for them as they are clearly just grunts with no intelligence of their own!

Thanks in advance
Brian

I don't remember exactly, but you look at the target in the regular binos, and when the X is on it, there is a key to press. It might also light a button upon the row below to set the target.

Yeah use the binos on the target you want blown up and press space and the gun crew will kill it to death (eventually), you're better off doing it yourself though.

Does the gun crew get more 'experience' if I let them do it rather than manning the deck gun myself, manually?

I believe so though I usually do it myself, so I'm not sure.

My guys are so skilled it's pathetic and still waste 1/3 of the ammo even at ranges of 600 yards. I would gripe about it but I kinda like shooting the big gun myself.

Good to know, maybe I won't bother trying to get my guys super-trained on the deck gun then if it doesn't make much difference. I kinda figured that if I got them skilled enough they'd eventually be able to aim much better than I could myself. Apparently not.

I wonder if it'd be possible to make a mod that would increase the effectiveness of having highly skilled gunners, make it so they can at least shoot as well as a skilled player can do it manually? Might make the crew management thing more meaningful.

The binoculars are giving me hell, so don't see how they help. The coning tower blocks most of what anyone should see.

Best way to get the gunners to be more accurate is to reduce the variables they are dealing with. I tend to reduce speed or stop, and ammidship the rudders. Angles and velocity make the gunners sloppy. This of course, is only good when finishing off unarmed merchants, but when else would you be crazy enough to use the deck gun!

To force your gun crews to attack a specific target, place it in the center of your binocs and hit the space bar. That orders your gun crew to attack that vessel.

I agree the conning tower obstructs your view - from the bridge you should be able to move and see in a 360 degree area. Unfortunately, there isn't a "fix" for this - unless one of the modders want to reskin the conning tower exterior so that the bridge views are clear - if thats even possible.

Personally - on the few times I have tried to engage escorts, I did so from long range - if you surface in a convoy and are trying to run from escorts - the chance or survival on the surface is slim. If you did manage to sink one - the other 2 or three would swarm and ram you.

Something to try - see if the same keystroke pattern works in periscope mode. If it does - then you can get 360 FOV that way.

Actually there is a great mod that gives you an unobstructed 360 deg view with the bino's, here is the link:
