Hi all, I don't know what happened, but first I cleared off the navmap the contents that were generated 6 days ago. I tried to generate a new Intelligence Report with SH3 Gen, but no go? Why not?

Need Help.

To generate a new Report you need:

1. Save the game.
2. Exit the game and go to desktop
3. Run SH3Gen and load the game you just saved (the savegame file I mean)
4. Close SH3Gen and run SH3 again
5. Load the save game and you will see your report.

Hi Mel.

Thanks a bunch, I did all that. but you know what was wrong? I have several installs and Gen was not pointed to any particular Silent Hunter :damn: So I put in the route and everything was okay. :D

I tried. I have a VIIC and it's Aug '40 and I came across a convoy and could not sink a darn one, the fog was so thick.

Dont worry Rob, I know a lot of casual users (in the office and at home) who are having problems understanding the use of files, folders, executable paths etc. It might be frustrating but once you understood how it works you have moved a big step forward.

Its the price you pay for the convenience that comes with Windows - I noticed that its much more natural for people who grew up with MS-DOS, and who had to learn to shuffle their files around, at least until Norton Commander appeared.

That's true actually. Although I'm more of a Unix fan myself. Too bad you cannot play GWX on Linux :nope:

Hi Mel and GlobalExplorer.

I just used up all my torpedoes and was heading back to Kiel when I receive a message that my base was changed to St. Nazaire. but I look down where St. Nazaire is supposed to be and it's not on the map, only Lorient is.

What's up?

Rob

Go back to the base you started from then when you start your next mission it should be St.Nazaire.

Oh, I have to go back to Kiel first.

Thanks Jim

Actually... with recent Wine you can play just fine. I am. With SH3 Commander, mods and everything.

Two-three gotchas:
- Grid map (AN44, etc.) is garbled. Easily worked around by having a paper grid map. Everything else about the map seems to work just fine.
- GWX 1.03 has crashes when starting campaigns, for some weird reason. Some hours of painstaking testing later, I found that stock SH3 and GWX 1.02 both work just fine for me. (probably Wine's or my fault, not the fine GWX creators)
- You must have a very current Wine. 0.9.38 or latest from git.

Oberleutnant z. S. Waldemar Wolgast of the U-13 is currently pondering preparations for his seventh patrol, off Hartlepool, in March 1940. Wonderful game. My first serious stint of ship hunting since Silent Service II...

So you mean you can play GWX on Linux with the same frame rate, speed and graphics as in Windows? That's fantastic news. If that's the case I'm thinking really seriously to get rid of Mr Gates :yep:

Heh. Can't really tell if it performs as in windows, since windows have never touched this newest box o'mine. And won't in the future. But the game looks beautiful. Thanks Ubisoft and GWX crew!

Haven't tested multiplayer, though. I have a sneaking suspicion that might break, yet.

(PS. nVidia is the proven gaming option on Linux, despite the binary-only driver issues.)

@WolfOfCampscapel (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=232500): Thanks for sharing your experience, if SHIII and other games can indeed be run under Linux/Wine, that is extremely interesting.

Thanks for the welcome, fellow kaleuns!

@GlobalExplorer, Sh3Gen is troublesome though. Or rather, dotNET 1.1/2.0. Haven't got that working yet.

PS. Nothing quite like the feeling of limping the last few nautical miles to Helgoland on batteries, since the diesel doesn't even have fumes left. Damn north sea heavy weather mucking up all my plans!

Not unexpected .. However, I was told that Mono runs dotNET Apps pretty well under Linux .. though I must admit I have neither tried nor do I think it has a lot of appeal.

In fact I have gotten myself a bit cautious of MS and Windows, so the work I have done in the recent year has to a large part been platform independent C++ (Ogre3D, wxWidgets and the like). It is much more work and not so much a walk in the park like dotNET, but it feels right to go 100% with open source APIs, and it actually teaches me something new.

Good luck with your experimentation and dont forget to post because this kind of information interesting to me.
