View Full Version : Who Is Your Virtual Capt. Named After?
For my current patrol, I've named my virtual Captain in honor of my Grandfather, who served in the Pacific, in the Phiippines. He passed away almost a year ago at the age of 96! I never tired of his war stories, or looking through his war photo album, which he left me.
The photos are great, and include a sunk Japanese merchant vessel in the bay, and the destruction of a communications tower. If I ever figure out how to post them here, I will!

After my father.
He used to tell me about valiently defending the Great Lakes against the hostile Canadians in the early 60s in the USNR.
Even as a kid I thought that that was really funny.
He served on the USS DE Daniel Joy.

I always just start a career and then I go back and change the Skipper Name to the "real" name of the skipper for that boat during that period.
Call me a rivet counter but I like it like that ;) Currently I am running a patrol 1943
Commander is Lt.Cdr. J.W. Coe
Boat is USS Skipjack
I even like to add the conning tower stuff, although most boats did not have them...makes me happy though ;)

Well usually I use Peter Blood or Geoffrey Thorpe. Let's see if anyone here knows where those references come from. But my latest name is a little different and there's a bit of story behind it. You see I was on shore leave oh about 3 years ago, met up with this girl a few nights. Let's just say she was rather muscular in the nether regions. Well, I pushed when I should should have pulled, and it was like ramming a brick wall. Long story short (no pun intended!) 3 years later the adverse affects are almost gone, but I cannot resist but use the name...... CAPTAIN HOOK!
Gee, I hope my Mom doesn't read this! :o

I guess I'm the weird one. In SH3 I either use the name Commander gives me or make up one I think is appropriately German-sounding: Bruno Asche was my first kaleun. Once I'm actually playing SH4 I'll probably start with something like Joseph Abernathy, or Michael Allen. Always alphabetical order.
Cp. Jack Aubrey, from the Master & Commander books, best series ever.
SH IV = Ozzy Wasbourn (don't know way ..but i like Ozzy Osbourn..a little bit nuts:lol:)
SH III = Kriegbaum ( das boot )
I use my own name and my boat is always the Paragon. :|\\

When I start a new career, I always name my new captain after the most senior officer on my boat at the end of my last career. Unless of course they are all dead, then I'll use my name usually.
I like these:
Cpt. Eriprando Manovella
Cpt. Cecco Lo Cascio
Cpt. Beniamino Caraffa
They sound funny in my language (I'm from Italy), but I suspect they sound very funny in english too  ...

I use my own name for the skipper, since I am the skipper of the boat.
And as far as the name for the boat itself I use the historic name in the game.
I'd like to use the name USS Devilfish, since it is a cool sounding name for a sub.
Does anyone remember "The Winds of War" with Robert Mitchum and Jan Michael Vincent?

Heck, I've replaced all the crew names with the first and last names of all kinds of people, old school chums, actors, neighbours, even women that I would love to ship out with.
The game then randomizes them and I get very interesting crew.
I simply use my real name translated to the language the game is about:
-Playing Sub Command US subs, SH1 or SH4 I'm Albert Johnson or Jackson
-Playing SH3 I'm Albrecht Hansen or Albert Von Hansen
-Playing Sub Command russian subs I'm Liutenant Ivanov
Does its bit for inmersion IMO:up:
