Hi everyone.

I've been out of action for a long time due to complications in servicing a busted cooling fan in my 6600 Gfx card. After getting it back and started playing SH3 again i thought i'd check back in subsim and man, the list of new things around is staggering and intimidating.

So, i have a couple of questions to help me get back in the thick of action

1) What exactly is this new GWX supermod i'm hearing about?

2) Are saved games compatible between vanilla SH3, patched up SH3 and modded SH3? I'm on my 6th patrol (carreer started in 1940), managed to upgrade from a VII to a IXB with all available boat upgrades and i'd like to keep it if possible.

3) Last but not least...is there a way to bypass the copy protection to keep my original CDs in good shape? I try to preserve my original CDs in prime condition whenever possible, so i usually burn them onto a second disk and run with a copy cd/no cd patch. I always keep a copy of the original files in case i neeed to revert to the default installation in case a new patch comes out.

Thanks in advance everyone ;)

Hi and welcome back

1, Read this thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102096
You can read the GWX manual online here http://mysite.orange.co.uk/manual/GWX/GWX_MANUAL_EN_PF.pdf

2, Depends on what mods you use
Sometimes they work sometimes they dont

3,Yes there is but not allowed to be discussed on here

If you do decide to get GWX then also get SH3commander and GWX specific cfg files
All available here http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/download.html

Wow, thanks a lot for the speedy reply. I guess i'll lose my current campaign if i decide to go with GWX, but just looking at the jpg of the DVD case it seems to be so worth the hassle.

I'm off to read the GWX manual and decide what i'll do. If anyone knows of a way to keep my current carreer though, i'd be more than willing to hear from you.

Thanks again

LOL, we'll see you in a couple of days then.:D

There is no way that you'll be able to keep your current career. GWX makes so many widespread changes that it is impossible. I believe that this is more likely a side effect of additional content & scripting (i.e more ships/planes etc)

Yep, i guess that's the case. However, a quick glance at the manual (quick meaning more than an hour i guess, i completely lost track of time) has convinced me i should get it even if only to try it.

I only have one question though...my antivirus license has expired and i haven't updated it yet but i really want to get GWX as soon as possible...is that gameshadow client safe to use? I guess i'll have to apply the mod over version 1.4 and then get the extra patch for GWX 1.03, is that right?

Come to the drak side - we have GWX! Once you've tried GWX you will never go back, its an amazing mod (btw try the crash dive sequence you will love it!). Oh, btw...just don't go towards DD's like you would in stock SHIII lol, or say hi to ol' Davey Jones!

Btw, if your dl'ing it now, speak to you in a month Herr Kaluen!

Yes install over a clean install patched to 1.4
Then add the 1.03 patch ( 1.04 is in the making at the moment )

I recommend you use SH3commander too

Rgr everyone, i assume you mean 1.4b...I was at a webcafe that i used to work at (good broadband pipe and deepfreeze protected PCs) so i installed gameshadow, downloaded everything inlcuding the kitchen sink and burned it on a DVD for safe keeping.

The manual is insane, plus having the chance to sink one of the most famous warships in my country (Georgios Averof) is a big plus

Ok, i got everything set up last night...and lost my sleep

The documentation is 10 times better than what you can find in games you pay for, but even after skimming through all those juicy bits in the manual i still got blown away when i actually ran SH3 again. It's like an entirely new game, so a big thanks is in order for the dev team :rock:

What i did was start a campaign with SH3 commander to get a type IX right out of the bat. It could be seen as cheating but it's only a little bit, i moved from a VII to a IX in my pre-GWX install normally via spending renown, so i felt like i could bend the rules a little.

I got orders to patrol northwest of Ireland (AM24 i think), so it was natural to take a swing by Scapa Flow. I got promptly detected by a 1939 "inexperienced" DD and he made a pass, lightly damaging my tube compartment but i evaded him with only 30m under the keel and perfect weather in full daylight. Then i entered from the north east, went in decks awash to recharge batteries and better avoid the shipwrecks in the narrow passage and i ran aground

After minimal damage i ordered full surface and ran to clear the shallow part with a couple of patrolling DDs about 6-8km from me. Suddenly i'm being shelled and my deck gun is damaged, so i dive to PD and go silent again. Thankfully, my batteries and oxygen are fully replenished during my short dash on the surface.

There's a small tanker moored by the docks and a troop transport further out, so i choose the second one (closer and more tonnage). I fire an electric torp set for magnetic detonation and it misses on a stationary target. Sub nets! I set another one for impact, running at 2.5m and score a direct hit right below and behind the smoke stack. I guess the "rumours" about the boiler room being there are true, he broke in half and went down (slowly...awesome flooding/sinking modelling).

With some space between me and the DDs, i ran at full speed to get some distance from the "scene of the crime" before going silent again...and it worked. I hear pinging in the distance but they can't find me. I will take the same way out, hopefully having about 8-10km between me and the escorts when i reach the shallow canal so i can surface and flank it until i'm in somewhat deeper waters. The ingress was made with 2-5m under keel in PD and it was a bit unpleasant, so i prefer to make a dash on the surface if possible :D

What i can tell is that it certainly is harder than the stock version, but it's not stupidly harder for the sake being so. If you have some patience and use your head it works ok and that's exactly the right way to make it challenging without being frustrating. Excellent

I just have some final (for now) questions in regards to saved games. If i need to load a saved game, should i do it by exiting patrol and loading, or exiting game and launching via SH3commander? If so, is there a difference between loading a game in port and loading one at sea or can i load all kinds of saved games both from inside the game and SH3commander?

Thanks in advance guys, you've been a tremendous amount of help.
