Any way to get a new conning tower?

I haven't been offered a new conning tower, and I read somewhere that this feature is missing. Is there any way to upgrade to a new conning tower? If it's missing in-game, is there any way to edit the save game file?

Happened on refit up grade in base to our boat,1942.

I didn't know you could upgrade your conning tower. I thought you just got them when you changed boats later in the war. The two times I've upgraded to my Gato Class, both USS Drum for some reason, I havn't made it past my first patrol with them. KIA

Eventually I'll get one of those nice new boats with the 40MM guns and the fancy conning towers.

Is there a stand-alone fix to the "early retirement" problem when you switch to a new boat? I've seen it (or something advertised as a fix) as part of larger mods. I'm reluctant to get a new boat after all I've heard.

I am at work now.. but I know you can change it in a file in the data/submarine/subclass folder.

bump my last question, about a stand-alone career fix. Anyone?

@ Vindex - in my case, I'd started my career in Pearl (on a Tambor), accepted a Gato, then after a year was offerd a Balao. I took the new boat and was transferred to Brisbane. Went on patrol, missed a message about base change, finally sorted it out and found out that my base had changed to Fremantle, sailed there and ended the patrol, only to be mothballed because my first sub had been scrapped by the navy.

tried it and it worked. However, I also tried this: reloaded a save just before ending the patrol after which i was offered the new sub, rejected the offer (and lost some renown), after 3 or 4 patrols i was once again offered a new sub, accepted and this time WASN'T transferred but remained in Pearl, played on happilly till the the end of the war.
