Where are they? any fellow captians know of any routes of convoys? Grid locations would be appreciated.

Plus iv just gotten sonar : how dose it work and how do i use it?

With the game comes a wonderful map! Normally you can find a LOT of convoys waiting north of Ireland, heading southeast to dock at Liverpool or Bristol or wherever. :D

Greetings IrischKapitan and welcome to the forum

First thing you want to do is make sure your game has the 1.4 patch.
Convoys can show up as incomming reports and on your F5 screen. They usually are not moving to super fast hopefully giving you time to plot an intercept. Vanilla SH3 has them, as do the mega-mods in-force when your ready to try them. Try the Western approches or West of Britain. North West of Lock-Ewe has plenty of singles if you find yourself that way. Someone else will be along shortly Im sure to fill you in on the Med.

When you have a few minutes take a look through the Community manual (http://mysh3.info/shiii).

to good hunting!

Welcome aboard, IrischKapitan.

Look in the Taner Alley and Happy Hunting Grounds threads. Lots of grids posted there with frequent convoys.

BE39, BF14 are good places, just don't get suckered into the shallow water areas.

A small tip which has led me to many convoys is this. When traveling along a shipping route (shown on your map), dive to about 20m now and then and listen on the hydrophone. However dont rely on the AI to do it do it yourself and you occasionally here the "chug chug chug chug" of a convoy. Sometimes its very faint so crank up the volume a bit.

That's a good tip Steel_Tomb

Failte IrischKapitan. If you're playing GWX theres a shipping chart stowed in the top left corner of the navigation screen that shows convoy and single traffic lanes. And if your not playing GWX you should be :D

Sonar is good if you have an unescorted merchant and you want an accurate distance for your fireing solution, but if there are escorts around they will hear the active sonar and come running.

The three best things you can invest in are

Better hydrophones- all the better to hear the world with

Radar detector- gives you more notice of incoming escorts and aircraft, but do keep an eye out, as it won't detect all of them!

Bold decoys- can make the difference in getting away from a pack of angery escorts!

Two other things are well worth getting

Snorkel- from 1944 onward, this needs to become standard fit if you wish to survive

Radar- Early sets aren't worth the investment due to limited arc of reading, wait for a later model with a better dection field and range. Be careful in it's use , as it can be detected by others at a greater range than it will be able to detect them.

when you pick up a sonar contact, investigate, then attack
