View Full Version : GWX requirement to run silent(1kts) realistic?

It is pretty apparent even if the escorts are not alerted anything but silent(1kts) will draw escorts to you.

I want to ask just how realistic this is? I assume all this was researched by sub-grogs. In the modern day world, diesel/electric subs are quite stealthy platforms when running on batteries at low speeds in a high SNR environment. One would think that a convoy of 40 ships would qualify as a high SNR environment. Now, of course, signficant advances were made in quieting subs after WWII, but then the passive sonar technology of the 1940s could not have been nearly as sophisticated as today's equipment enhanced by microprocessors.

So, is this realistic or was this just a game play improvment to increase the challenge factor by making the player have to carefully prepare his attack, since when you are stuck making 1kts there is little chance to correct any attack profile errors. Hmm, I think I need to read Wahoo and Clear the Bridge again and see what attack speeds were used. I kind of remember 2-3 kts, since O'Kane had spoken about slowing before scope observations to reduce scope wake.

Thanks.

GWX silent running should take you to 2 kts
That will slow with manouvres
