View Full Version : How many fish do you fire?

I was just curious if anyone has any set ways on how many torpedos you fire at certain types of targets?

I fire 1 at DDs
2 at small targets
3 at medium to Large Merchants/Tankers
4 at Light/Heavy Cruisers
6 at BBs and CVs

This may seem stupid, but I fire one at at a time at juicy targets, if they are still floating after first, I fire another (I use torp damage x1.5 mod though, so usually they aren't).

1 at DDs and Small tankers/freighters
1 at Medium tankers/freighters
2 at Large tankers/freighters
2 at Liners, all sizes
4 at everything else except the pirate ship....I'm planning on having the crew board that bastage and make his crew walk their plank.

Same procedure as UnSalted, except I plan to RAM the pirate ship.

wow, you guys waste a lot of hardware on unworthy targets. if there are only small or medium merchants, i break off the attack, and look for better targets.

if its a bigger merchant, i'll give him one shot. if he is still moving, he might get another. finish him with deck gun.

I do it realistic :D
3 fish per target, one set for MOT, one with left, one with right gyro angle.
That was standard procedure, except for really big targets.

What ever it takes to sink them. :smug:

I use 1 for DD's
Small merchants and tankers I usually leave alone
medium merchants and tankers.. 1 fish at the time
Large tankers and merchants and liners.. 2 fish
BB and CV.. fire per 2

1 torpedo for a small merchant isnt a waste... 95% of the time I can sink a small merchant with 1 good shot... If you fir 3 torps for a 8000ton ship whats the difference if you fire 1 or a 3000 ton ship

Modern Medium Composites seem to require 4 to 6 torps and about 50 rounds of deck gun :p They are tough buggers.

ps; Im using the die slowly mod so they may require some adjustment to there HP.

I generally fire at least 2 at nearly any target just to hedge my chances against a torpedo failure / dud.

As a general rule, I don't fire at small ships at all, or tankers (too many 8-10 torpedo episodes and the tanker still sailing). I fire 2 torpedoes at all medium/large merchants, and follow up with more later if necessary. I'll shoot 1 only at a destroyer, but generally only when I have to. I fire two at cruisers or carriers, and when I see a battleship, I either unload the entire complement of that end's tubes at it if it's a single, or I split 3/3 between two battleships if my front tubes are fully loaded and pointing at them. 3 torpedoes may or may not sink a BB, depending on where they hit.

There are many factors involved as there usually is in every decision....remaining torpedos, how close I am to ending a patrol and going home, can I surface and take out a small ship with guns alone, etc, how much gun ammo is left, etc etc.

I've found I can use the deck gun with HE rounds on small and medium tankers and often set them afire with 5-10 hits. Once they start burning it's easy enough to follow them until they burn and sink. It seems to me the tankers are assigned a much higher gun damage factor than other ships by the AI which would make sense.

Every time I learn an absolute about what does what in this game, I find an exception within hours....that IMHO is what makes it a great game.

Yes I have much better luck with the deck gun against tankers than torpedoes.

Its just to pesky escorts keep spoiling my fun ;)

I fire as many as needed, generally not more than two or three at the outside per ship are needed. Let it be known that I do not let any merchie get past. Ever. If I've got 3 shells left for the DG, I surface and fire at the rudder / screws. Damn those ships and their supplies!

I also don't mind coasting submerged off their beam to make sure they sink. If a little patience and a lot of good preparation can save me a torpedo, so be it. But again, no one gets past safe if I can help it. You never know when a plane will swoop out of nowhere and damage your scopes beyond repair. That means one quick trip back to port, and I'd hate to roll in with fish still in the tubes.

BTW: I'm using RFB, so merchies are alot harder to come by, also, with 100% realism, I have to fire a small spread to account for miniscule targeting and plotting errors. I'm not perfect, but I have a large warhead that says I'm good enough! SINK!

I'm also using RFB, so finding targets is a little more difficult, as is finishing off wounded ships with the deck gun. (I usually don't even bother, actually) Therefore, when I actually FIND some good targets, I want to make sure they don't sail home. I never fire torps at anything under 4,000 tons. Typically I'll fire 3 fish per target. If it's especially juicy, like a BB or carrier, I'll unload 4-6. Although it can be frustrating when you fire multiple torps and the first one is a critical hit, it's better than firing too few and allowing your prey to sail home for repairs. :damn:

For those who fire 1 torp/target, how do you manage that? Don't they begin zig-zagging after the hit? I find that getting a good solution on a zig-zagging target is far too tricky for me to do reliably. Any tips here would be great.

I don't bother with DD's, unless I've got like 1 fish left in the stern tubes and she's chasing me...then I figure, why not?

By the way, I'm reading Thunder Below right now (about the Barb) and its a fabulous read...highly recommended! Last night I read about how they were caught in a fishing net :o

Happy hunting, all! :arrgh!:

I tend to put two into tankers, one into cargoes, unless there's some other issue involved (weather, no spares, fuel).

:yep: u know, today i tried to finish the last tutorial mission (u know which i'm talking bout - the convoy mission) and i made the decision of not firing many at once. so i fired 1 or 2 at most at once. crippled the 3 huge tankers. one coastal. killed a small destroyer w/my tail .blank! one shot (obviously a fluke.) and those two huge tankers hung around until i shove more and more and more torps into them and others one-by-fekin'-one! reload times really strung me out. luckily killing the one destroyer, sort of unloaded my responsibility and the other one hung back all the time i was slowly killing the convoy.

I fire all my torps then i suface and use the deckgun. ( im a bad shot:damn: )

you're doing it wrong. i cracked one in half with one torp last night. set to 14 feet, aim for the middle.

Those pesky buggers are the only reason I use a torp on DDs...I get frustrated when an escort denies me satisfaction. :)
