Today was my first volunteer day for the USS Torsk! She is in good shape but still needs a lot of work. She is on the water but going to dry dock soon for repair to the hull. I had free run of the sub. I was even down in the bilges below the electric motors. Even took off the cover to the brushes on the electric motors to find that these were brand new but not fully installed by the Navy. Looks like they started but stopped for some reason. I spent most of the time cleaning the manuevering room for a new coat of fresh paint. What was interesting was finding old artifacts from years gone by when covers from the electrical boards were removed for paint preparation. She still smells of diesel and one diesel open for a look see. Big engines these are!

At the end of this month there is a planned parts hunt in Philapelphia PA and some of these parts as I understand it are going to the USS Cavalla. So Neal will have some more parts for this sub in Glaveston TX. Seems to be on going to find missing parts.

Anyone who lives in MD and is interested volunteering your time come on down. Saturday mornings at 0700 to about noon. You can stay longer if you wish. Guests come aboard starting at 1000 and if you are standing around with a Torsk cap on and a shirt that says Torsk crew like I was, they start asking questions!!!!:o I was a tour guide in the manuevering room!!! One kid asked me if he could fire a torpedo:o It was a very satisfying morning and I felt good about doing something important to me and other submarine enthusiast, also for the men who served aboard the Torsk and the other submarines around the world.

Oh yeah, the subs in SH4 are dead on when it comes to the large plane wheels, guages, switches and things:up:

Another view of Torsk as she slides into the Piscataqua River.

From the site you posted. Sounds like an amazing experience. Next
year with friends plan to go to a few ball games. Boston, New York then
Baltimore :yep: Told a buddy of mine that when in Baltimore I want to
check this out.

Again nice post, neat bit of info regarding the comparison to how subs are modelled in SH4.

LOL... uh... Reallydedpoet?

I've noticed you've been using the "roll eyes" e-mote at the completely wrong times a lot. This one .

Just FYI- it kinda means you think something's stupid. It's confusing when you seem to be excited about something and put that in there. Haha. Are you trying to confuzle me?

I wish I lived in MD...
I'd be there in a heart-beat!

Still....I know you'll keep us up to date on all the activities and such, cus' she's a fine boat, deserving of all the love she can get.

Glad to give her some...from afar!

It was a great time and more to follow. I slipped through a hatch that gives you access to the electric motors and the brushes/staters, etc. If you have any kind of beer belly....you ain't going through this hatch. What was really cool was glass circular windows maybe 6 inches in diameter that you could flash a light in to see how the brushes are. I guess this was needed if one went down you could find the problem easily. Anyway, we opened these to find new brushes and such that were not completely installed. At this point in the sub I was at the very bottom of the hull. What is cool is tourist that walk through just see the surfaces of guages and switch, etc. When you volunteer to work on it.....you get to go everywhere and if you can fit where other can't, you get to go there also! There is plexiglass that cover the doors to the Capt/Officer quarters/Yoemans room and the radioroom. As a volunteer, you get to go in and sit in the chair, see all the things up close and personal. It is a hands on sub where you can turn switches and knobs. Reason being, when the Navy turned it over they basically cut all the wires that would make the sub functional again. The electrical panel still functions but is fed from a land line and the wiring for lighting is set up off this panel. We repaired the warning speaker that goes off when water reaches a certain height in the bilges so it can be pumped out. That thing went off and scared the bejebbers out of a visitor! So, volunteering gives you the golden key to the whole deal. Kind of sweet when it is something you are really interested in and interested in restoring.

I looked more into the Boy Scout deal. The kids get to go on the Light Ship for dinner and navigation classes. The get the complete tour of the submarine. A movie is shown in the mess hall on the sub then it is lights out at 11PM. The sleep in the bunks in the forward torpedo room. Heck, when I was a scout they through my butt in the woods, said build a fire and cook your own dinner. :o

Warhawk,
Thank you for your information re the Torsk. Living in Alabama, my wife and I love to go to Mobile as often as we are able and wander around in the USS Drum SS228. Many times I have wished there could be an old submariner around to answer questions. So many things to see and no one to explain them. Unfortunately, we're not able to see many of the areas like some you mention, as they're off limits. Maybe some day we'll get to visit MD. This will be at the top of my list.

Now you know how excited I was when I loaded torp's in the Cavalla with Neal back in February. It felt awesome not just going and seeing the sub, but actually having a hand in its preservation. Good on ya! If I'm ever up that way, I'll send you a PM and I'll buy you a beer in exchange for you showin' me around her! :()1:

Not a problem Mookie. The curator for Cavalla is headed this way for some parts. As far as showing you around, I leave that up to Chuck who served on the Torsk between 1964-65. He earned his dolphins on the Torsk. She is the at the top with the most dives ever (surfacing also ;) ). The last to fire a torpedo in anger during WW2. He can tell you more than anyone. She needs work but has become a labor of love to the volunteers. But, yes, if you get here a private tour before opening at 10 am for sure.

I just woke up right now and I had the craziest dream! In my dream I realized that AVGWarhawk and the Tusk were really in San Luis, which is just 30 minutes away from me. I was all excited and got down there at 7:00 AM. I met AVG and the guy who owned the Tusk. I don’t know AVG in real life, but in my dream he was a crazy old man who had the look of a vet and was full of knowledge about the sub. The owner was this extremely rich guy, and we had to walk through this huge building with tons of stairs. It was also extremely dark, and there were seats everywhere kind of like a movie theater. I had boots on and I could hear people saying "SHHHHHHH" when I took a step but I wondered how the hell I could go any quieter. Then we reached the Tusk. My dad was with me, and he started taking pictures of her. I went inside and then I woke up.

Not quite sure which boneyard.

Not sure of the official name, but there's an old navy shipyard in Philadelphia. There's a lot of WW2 vintage decommissioned ships rusting there.

I live about 45 minutes west of Philly. Did some work there a couple years ago, polishing up some enormous power generators that were being shipped off to Iraq right after the invasion. Part of the restoration efforts right after Saddam fell.

Some really cool stuff there at the shipyard. If I remember correctly, I think there's a carrier there.

On the 4th of July this year, The U.S.S. Batfish will be holding a fourth of July celebration. The celebration will entail the following: The U.S. Army with some vehicles, They are going to try and set up a game room with 5-10 computers to play Silent Hunter 4 (the park has already set it up with UBI in order to get the game), there will be a craft fair, fireworks all around, a BBQ, an open house for the sub, and a movie on the side of the sub. So try to come down to Muskogee Oklahoma to visit the "Submarine killing submarine" of World war two. It will be loads of fun.

That is an understatement if I ever heard one. Memorial day for kids these days means the pool is open and the 4th means hot dogs/fireworks. Not much else for most folks other than a day off from work. All you can do is attempt to get them interested. My two girls (9 and 12) want to spend their Saturday mornings on the USS Torsk helping where they can. If they lose interest at least I can say I tried! All you can do is introduce them to it and hope it catches on.

I'm not surprised to hear that. I employ quite a few teenagers here to fuel some of this country's commercial aircraft and I find they have little regard for how safe they perform thier job. Made my second trip today to the USS Torsk. Spent most of the time polishing the aft torpedo room. A lot of brass to polish! I went into the conning tower. Very small. I can not imagine 8 men working in there. She has both her scopes. The attack scope is the original WW2 and the observation scope is a newer version. You can really zoom in with these scopes. So, I was busy zooming in on the chicks walking around the inner harbor. I lover summer time. The clothing get very slim to beat the heat. Besides, they look great through the scope. I looked closey at the PPI/radars, the SH4's radar scope is darn close thanks to the modders adding lines and numerals to the screen. The radar mast still spins with the help of a new motor so it makes the sub look alive with the radar making its sweeps outside the conning tower. You would be amazed at the super-structure below the deck. Full of tanks for compressed air and 4 large intakes going to the main induction behind the conning tower. Just one of the pipes is large enough in diameter to suck me all the way to the diesel engines. I guess 1600 horses needs a lot of air! I can see how a close depth charge can ruin a whole day! Spent some time on the bridge and the lookout posts. The TDC was not on the bridge as it is in the shop for repair and cleaning. The actual TDC board is huge compared to what we have in the game but what we need to play is enough. The TDC is still functional and I was busy playing with the AOB and bearing wheels. There are just so many switches and valves. It is a wonder how they go these subs to do what they do without sinking to the bottom!

New wood has been ordered for the deck. She will have an entire new deck and fresh paint topside. This is all happening in the coming weeks.

What is funny is visitors ask were the nuclear reactors are located. Uh, it is a diesel/electric sub. Is it just me smelling diesel? Anyway, a fun and enjoyable time especially when visitors were taking pictures of the newly polished torpedo tubes! I know my work was good!

Next week it is power washing the super structure.....for some reason the pigeons(sewer eagles) just love to roost there crapping all over the place:nope:

Sounds like your having alot of fun AVG, I hope that my time at the U.S.S. Batfish will be like yours in the way of work, alot of it in order to get the sub in tip top shape for the fourth of July.

Saturday was 5 hours of polishing the tubes. I know my work was appreciated as visitors who can come aboard at 1000 were flashing pictures like mad. For some reason they all like to have their picture taken in front of the 'cutie' that is half in the tube that fired the last torpedo for WW2 sinking a vessel. I felt good that they wanted pictures of the gleaming tubes. One little kid was cute, he looked at the torpedo and said it is like a bullet for a boat.

Trust me brother, there always something to be done! This Saturday I'm installing 5 compressed airtanks throughout the boat. These tanks have been sitting in the aft torp room for over 2 years. Time for them to find a home! I'm sure you will enjoy your time spent aboard. Just a note, learn all you can about the Batfish because if you are working on it the visitors start asking questions. My favorite question is," where are the nuclear reactors".

Oh, I have done my fair share of research, I have read Hughston E. Lowder's book "Batfish", and Don Keith's book "In the course of duty" both about the Batfish, I have read its patrol reports, I have looked over virtual tour many times, I have read abook entitled "War under the Pacific" about all U.S. sub warfare in WWII. One thing I just found out, while I was watching an interview with a torpedo man on the U.S.S. Cobia(I saw it from a special thing that came with my Gatosub model), when the subs would dive, it took a certain amount of water pressure to push down and seal the hatches, and before the hatch sealed, water would run into the compartment, and the torpedoman said on the first engagement, he was standing underneath the hatch and got drenched. Just thought you might like to know AVG in order to inform people.

They should show you everything. Being as you are now a volunteer. I'm sure her batteries are gone just like the Torsk. Here battery compartments are works shops now. We are way down in the belly of the beast when we go down there. But yeah, full run of the sub should happen for you. Hell, I was under the super stucture that makes up the deck. You should see all the tanks and tubes under the deck. Simply amazing these subs did what they did. Open up the hatch to main induction behind the conning tower. Check out how huge the intake is for the diesels. Amazing stuff.

Yea they have one of the batteries in the museum its about a good 4-5 feet tall, I will try to do that with the main induction, but im not sure what it looks like, im sure I will be in that area cleaning up trash because there is a hole in the steel around the bridge so when you walk by you can see the pressure hull for the conning tower, and kids just throw their coke cans and cheetos bags in there. Do people do that on the Torsk?

No, the visitors are respectful. It is the damn pigeon crap that gets me. We have wired off most of there roost. The air induction was pressure washed by another volunteer this week. Lots of pigeon crap. On going battle. Anyway, the doors to get under the deck on right on the deck. Wait until you see all the air tanks and escape trunks under the deck. Gives you a new outlook on how these subs were constructed. You will have a great time exploring. Ask if you can adopt a room to care for. I asked for the aft torp room. She is mine now to keep clean and polished.

Ok I will, which room would you reccomend?
My choice was the aft torpedo room. My reason was this is were the tour starts. In my view the room needs to have some pop and interest to set the tone for the rest of the tour. Also, tube 7 has a 'cutie' loaded 1/2 way into the tube. This was the tube that fired the last torpedo of the war. So it has some interest. We also have an electric torp and a mark 27 (not used in WW2 but still an example of a torpedo) on the torpedo skids. The original battle flag made by the men is located here behind glass and dedication plaques, etc. Also, the tubes are brass and once polished are just beautiful craftmanship. After I polished them his weekend everyone that came onboard was snapping pictures like mad. When done most said this is very cool and could not wait to see the rest. In my view it was the one best way to have visitors tell a friend so they come down. Revenue gets materials you need for upkeep and repairs. I keep that in mind when doing things on the Torsk.

Basically what room suits you. There just might be a room that needs some help, adopt it and do what you can with it. Again, the other volunteers might steer you into what needs to be done. For me, my new special project is to get 5 compressed airtanks installed throughout the boat. We have the tanks and u clamps but I needed to purchase threaded rod to mount these tanks. No big deal. It cost me $12.00 for materials. Like I said, there is always something to do. Maybe one of the other will adopt you for assistance in something! You will find that cleaning is the big thing. People touch, turn, push just about anything they can so the finger prints on your polished parts need to be cleaned up weekly.

I just talked to the park manager, and it looks like I will care for the forward torpedo room and control room, plus the rest of the sub, since there are so few volunteers. AVG we should have a torp. tube polishing contest see who has the brightest shine, lol.

One kid asked me if he could fire a torpedo:o

OMG that is too funny.

You should have told him "as soon as you work up the firing solution" and then go into long winded discussion about TMA

Then you could follow up with "or do what I do and play silent hunter" :smug:

Like I said, always something to do in every compartment. You will not be bored. BTW, for parts, being that Trout is the last sub in Philadelphia to have parts and is being sold for scrap in two weeks, what Batfish is missing will probably remain that way. Just no old subs anymore to use for parts.

I sure would like to visit the Batfish. I noticed that bow torp shutters are gone. Any idea what happened to these? The Navy required that we remove the Torsk tube shutters and weld in a sheet of steel. Still looks like torp shutter doors on the hull so it is ok by me.

Not really a labor of love. I have a grand time. My wife just does not understand and probably will never get the picture. Thats ok, she knows where I am on Saturday mornings. I wonder were she is on Saturday mornings :hmm: .....probably looking for the rags and cleaners I swiped from her;)

He'd probably defecate a brick if the kid whipped out a SACF/IS-WAS and asked for the first range and bearing...

It's a shame that there won't be any replacement parts anymore. It makes me sad to hear of old subs being sold for scrap or sunk. I'm just thankful for the subs we do have and can go through to learn about that piece of history.

Or is he asked if a Is-Was is ok to use for the solution!

What we do now is find out who purchased her for scrap and go ask if we can vulture the sub before the cutters get to her. Usually they say yes and we have at it.

They scrap them because it cost money to hold them in a berth. Such is life in the big city.

On the torpedo tube doors: Im not sure as to why they are not there, but they arent on the aft tubes either, but I wish they were stil there. My guess is that they just got to rusted to keep on there so they removed them, but its cool that you can see the tubes.

I might have already said this, im not sure, but the Batfish just came out with new t-shirts. They are all black, and on the back it has the battleflag. So if you can make it down for the fourth be sure to look for it.

Wow, you guys are inspiring me. It's a shame there's no subs or warships around here, but I'm starting to contemplate volunteering at the War Museum here. Wonder what it's like here, will definitely have to check with them. :p

Give it a look. The people at the Torsk let me dig right in. No questios asked. I'm having a blast and it takes away the daily grind. It lets me do other things other than think of bill/wife/kids/house.
