Starshatter The Gathering Storm
Starshatter The gathering Storm is only 800mb in size and probably class as some b grade game but dont be fooled by the crappy name or 2004 type graphics this spacesim rocks. A dynamic universe, mod friendly, modders would have a field day with this, mission generator, campaign & multiplay co-op. Take command of whole fleets, fighters, cruisers, dreadnaughts, cargos, command them all.
If your ever played Derek Smarts Battlecruiser series then its very simular but this one actually works, yep you can enter planets and fight it out too. Just dont expect fantastic graphics although they are good enough check out the site, and update to the latest patch, fixed joystick problems. Runs on vista as well.

A nice spacesim.

Starshatter is a space-sim modder's dream platform. Because Starshatter was designed from the ground up to support so many different play styles - from space fighter combat to airborne strikes to starship battles to fleet tactical encounters - you can use it to create mods for just about any popular science fiction universe you can think of. Creating a new mod can be as simple as importing some new ship models, editing a few text files that define ship and mission parameters, and running the game. Starshatter includes a "Custom Mission" selection screen that allows the end user to play any mod that is installed in the game directory.

It does look good trouble is I've done a search on both Play.com and Amazon, and I can't seem to find it.

Is it difficult to get hold of - or am I just being a blind numpty?

Edit: just found a link their website - blind Numpty it is then:D

Horridly buggy with mediocre gameplay and campaign. Recommend you skip it!

Well i like! :D Up to the 7th mission, haven't experince any major bugs apart fromt setting up the joystick correctly but the patch fixed that. Stick with it, its a great game, even if it is equialient to a B grade movie:)

Just for an idea of the bugs, last time I tried the carriers were unplayable because if you were in any view other than the orbiting cam, any recovering birds would smash into you on final approach. Something to do with the level of detail not being sufficiently rendered unless you are actually looking at your carrier. You would lose entire squadrons within a few minutes, and you don't get them back. You couldn't use any of the really important views like the mission assignment board or the situation map while you had birds up.

Cruiser combat is fun though.

Playing the old Starshatter demo had me wishing that the guy would make a WW2 Pacific game.

I actually was quite fond of Battlecruiser Millenium GE back in the day. The music was great, too. Pity my dog broke the disc:cry:.

You're kidding me? I bought this game for $10 from blockbuster. Played it for about week, but it never went anywhere. fly from point "a" to point "b" destroy or capture target "c", then fly back to point "a" for a piddly reward. I must have really missed something.

Kind of reminds me of SHIV, go to Honshu, go home, go to Honshu, go home, go to Honshu, go home, go to...............Honshu.:damn: :damn: :damn:

I'm tempted because it actually has a Newtonian flight model (And none of these games have that - the one thing I hate about the X series), but I'll wait to hear how you like it in a week or two from now.

If i want a good space sim, I guess the best one ever made was the Independence War series. It has an actual Newtonian flight model, and you can do whatever you want. Then it was modded to become the modern day Elite.

If you every played tabletop Battletech or Mechwarrior back in the day, Matrix games makes a game called "Titans of Steel: Warring Suns" which is exacly like it in every respect.

Great little game.

Good, old Privateer, best spacesim I ever played.....

Planets landing, different missions, beautifull cockpits (with damage model inside)......
and MYSTERY, some SECRETS.................... lack of this in X2/X3..............no reason
to explore space in X series.

Best Regards

Never could get into #2. Played #1, but got tired of the fake physics and clutches to go from one area to the next. Got rich too fast making fuel too. Had a mini empire and after I got all the best stuf money could buy for my ship, the game was pointless and easy.

StarForce really killed any desire left for playing #2 and #3, even though I own a copy of #2.

I really en=joy the both X2 and X3, esp after patches and bonus packs. And no star force;) anymore. The Egosoft company released no dvd version of exe files;)

And X3 is still going strong.

but yeah, the physics should be much more sophisticated...

I second that!

I have IDWar II: EoC and I love it. "The Middle States" Mod (or whatever the new name is) looked very promassing that last time I looked. :hmm:

The only thing keeping me from playing it is my crummy old joystick.

What I'd REALLY like is a remake of "Tie Fighter" with the sort of graphics you see at the front end of "Empire at War"......

If you own TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance your in luck. Someone converted the TIE Fighter stoyline over to X-Wing Alliance a few years back...

But I don't have a link...

Oh and I played the Starshadder demo so much in the past two days I'm up to Commander with three decorations. aside for a couple of bugs its a lot of fun. I Just wish I had the money to buy the full game.

Maybe we should start a game sharing commitee of some sort, and when you're done with one of these old games, share your CD's with the next guy? I have so many old games that I couldn't count them all. I-War 2 is a definite game that should be shared is an example. Some of these other games look entertaining also.

Just a thought.

What I'd REALLY like is a remake of "Tie Fighter" with the sort of graphics you see at the front end of "Empire at War"......Already exists:up:. Kind ole Safe-Keeper, before his Norwegian Operations adventure, was part of a team that ported TIE Fighter, including its and voice lines, to X-Wing Alliance. Download that, the Imperial theme (Imperial X-Wing Alliance, I think it's called), and the XWA Upgrade models. Your wish is hereby granted.
