To be fair there a a bunch of democrats, the likes of Ted Kennedy who was intimately involved in writing the bill, in favor of this as well.
That doesn't make Bush's support any less disturbing.

I believe it's referred to as the Kennedy-McCain reform.

McCain's popularity went down, I'm not sure if Kennedy's could get any lower considering his history. And, of course, Bush wants to push this BS amnesty thing.

Just today I had a pack of Mexicans come in who spoke less than three words of English. One asked me "ID? ID?" and pointed to the cell phones. I see it often enough to really piss me off. Especially since there's absolutely no enforcement. If I called an illegal in, I'd be laughed off the phone by authorities.:roll:

Actually, in the past two or three years, the rate of successful 'asylum applications' in the UK has gone down quite noticably, with more and more failed applications being reported in the Home Office statistics. The reason I happen to know this is that for the past three years, one of the magazines I produce as a freelancer includes a regular report on the Home Office statistics.

Here's a quick quote from that magazine (one of the boring freelance jobs I have to do - and no, I'm not going to name it, as I want to keep the contract to produce it): 'A total of 4,085 asylum seekers including dependants were removed from the UK in Quarter 4, 6 per cent higher than in Quarter 3 in 2006.'

I've noticed this figure change quite a lot over recent years, so it's a definite trend in the UK to deport more people and refuse more asylum applications if the Home Office statistics are to be believed, and if anything, they'd probably try and make them appear less draconian in order not to feed ammo to the sort of 'bleeding heart PC crowd'. Who, incidentally, are willing to believe any bogus 'asylum' request without question, there being far too many of that type in Social Services in the UK from what I've seen. And believe me, I know what a bunch of useless sods these people are, as I have to work with them to hit print deadlines, and most of them are so incompetent and gullible that you could probably sell them a bucket of steam.

Build a fence, make employers subject to very harsh penalties, do away with so called sanctuary cities, etc. Do all that first. Penalize the Mexican gov't for promoting illegal immigration. Here in the UK we would have to penalize half of the European Governments (it's their borders the illegals travel across to come to Britain) ....but ultimately I would be asking the most difficult questions of the French authorities. Recent documentaries show masses of illegals being allowed through the Channel Tunnel because one must presume the French are only too happy to see the back of them.

You would need 10 million INS officers to deal with the Illegal Alliens in the United States now.

Just the per diem we would have to pay the INS officers while they are on assignment would bankrupt the country. My uncle was a GS-16 at INS. His assistant, Doris, was a GS-12 who later worked for me as a secretary at another job in Vermont. She used to process Illegal Alliens for INS.

Plus, once you detail the illegals, you have to feed and house them until they can be returned. Then you have to pay to fly them back where the came from. This process generally takes about 2 weeks.

Doris would fly down to Puerto Rico from Burlington to process the illegals. She was telling me the cost per illegal is thousands of dollars each to get them back home.

The size of this bureacracy to return 30 million Illegal Aliens would choke a horse.

Just making them illegal creates a law that is absolutely unenforcable.

The compromise was the only viable short term solution.

The only real solution is of course to honestly help our neighbors become more prosperous, rather than just expoit them for natural resources.

I know you're joking but you make a good point. Not counting the Eskimos, in North America there were no non-warlike American Indians. An instructor brought this up in a class during military training. I was 23 at the time, and I remember wondering why I had never throught of that before.

You may think so. But walk in John's moccasins. The FBI & The GOONs(Guardians of the Oglala Nation) murdered his first wife and 2 children in the 1970's during the FBI COINTELPRO program when they took down the Black Panthers & the American Indian Movement. The murders were, of course, never solved. As for me, I admire any man who has a 17,000 page FBI dossier. I probably understand him better because my wife & I were shot by soldiers at Sand Creek in 1864. I know this for a couple of reasons. The first time I saw the movie Soldier Blue, I had nightmares for weeks after. When we lived in Colorado, we went to a psychic fair and had virtually all of them tell us that we had walked the land before when we had volunteered nothing about ourselves. When we made the pilgrimage to the massacre site, we knew where the Cheyenne & Arapaho village sites were when there were no marks on the land. We both had visions at that moment of stealing away from the villages to be together. I don't expect you to believe any of what I'm telling you. Hell, if I hadn't experienced it, I wouldn't either. But living with psychic witches for the past seventeen years, as I have, has made a believer out of me. It's probably why I have no fear of death anymore.
