That's awesome Dan! I went back in '04 in June just after the 60th anniversary commemoration. It really was like stepping back into 1944 -- not much has changed in the small hamlets and villages (though Caen and Carentan both look fairly modern. Bombing I'm assuming). Did you find anything of interest in Carentan? We stopped in the town to check things out/have lunch and we discovered a modern town/city -- kind of ugly. Maybe we were just on the outskirts? Did you visit the memorial at Caen? Did you also see the Bayeux Tapestry while you were there? How about the little museum in Ste. Mere Eglise? I remember going to Pegasus Bridge -- they replaced the original in 1993 but it sits in a nearby field. It's really amazing to look at the bullet holes and damage done. We also visited Cafe Gondree near Pegasus Bridge, which, stories say, was the first building liberated by the Allies on June 6. We met the owner, who was actually living in the building on June 6, 1944! Did you go there as well? Anyway, I am itching with anticipation! Can't wait to hear all about it.

Ah, Great dancovas!
I've been in Normandy myself lots of times on vacation..
been to many monuments, bunkers , beaches, musuems and graveyards
really France contains a lot of WW2 history.
great country.
I've also been to a French village , where the SS squad took revenge of a Rebelion action by exterminate the whole village . the remains are still there untouched. really a sad place to be.
I've a lot of good memories of france beeing on Campings

Oradour sur Glane, the SS burn live most of the villager in the church , they were only few survivors (3 or 4) who escape the flames and the shoots from the soldiers.
The SS did a mistake and attack the wrong village, there were no reistants in this village.

Yeh,
I knew that the village had no part in the Resistancé, but they got the beating anyhow.
really It discusted me that they locked everyone up in a church. set it on fire...and the people inside tried to threw their children out of the window so they would escpape the horror..but that failed.
like I said before..its a sad place when you wandred through it.
its very nice that they kept the place like it was...it really pictures the horrors of war.

Yes, I passed one of these in the Porkhov region in Russia. Very sad :(
(though unlike Oradour, there is hardly anything left standing of it)
