View Full Version : Convoy spotted (actually one escort)?

I receive a contact report on a convoy.
So, (no tails) I plot the likely area of intercept. I transit and begin the search. I (ahead 1/3) get a ship spotting on a clear and calm day.
What's the best thing to do?
My thought: Immediately go to PD before I am counter-detected. Since I have a rough idea of the convoy's course, turn perpindicular and move ahead slow to position for a shot by the time it reaches me. Mainly follow sound bearings and only put up the scope when it sounds like it is time shoot.
Reasonable?
Thanks.
If the convoy is approaching you are in a very good position
What would I do:
-PD
-silent running
-pop up the periscope and take range and bearing of 2 ships in every row of the convoy and draw their course lines
-lower the periscope and correct course to 90° angle of attack
-use sonar to track ships along the lines
-adjust speed so that you get to 400m from the first course line at about the same time as the target does
-when gyro is approaching 0° pop up the scope (make final adjustments) and let those eels soar

Agreed....providing your in a favourable enough position to get into a firing position without exhausting your batteries....remember, you need some juice in reserve for possible evasive manouvres :yep:
On several occations when my position was ahead and on the path of the convoy, I went to 25-40 m, turned my boat so it faced the convoy for a smallest possible porfile to reduce chance of asdic detection, and set speed at 1 or 2 knott.
Then, after the escort passed by I ordered PD and turned my boat so it's as close as possible to perpendicular to the convoy's path.

I like to lay in wait at PD and silent running if the covoy is within range.
With GWX installed the DD's will (not might) spot you from VERY far off. So I personaly hit "Dive to PD" at any spot report from the watch. While the boat is submerging, take a peek through the periscope and try to identify the vessel. If it's a DD or Escort, contiune to PD and start plotting thier screen patterns. If it's a merchant, I surface and try to get better postion before going back to PD.
Rig for silent running and point your bow into the on coming ships. Make sure you keep your speed around 2 to 3 kts or your conning tower will break the surface. Get under the DD screen, turn 90 degrees towards the track, fire, and prepare to get pounded.
I place myself in front of convoy and dive to PD for sound contact. I appoach at 2 knots with depth set at 14 meters. At night , I track ship with periscope. In daytime by hydrophone. Once past lead escort, I turn perpendicular to convoy path.
The idea is to shoot forward and rear tubes (seldom have the time to do that.).Depending on convoy size, position of ships and escorts, I like to let the first line go by. Then I should have plenty of targets for all my tubes. I shoot magnetics to tw ships, which haven't reached my firing line and impacts at those in front of me.
Imediately after firing I go to flank and begin the Wiggle-Waggle. :yep:
