SH3 1.4b + GWX 1.03

In my other games like AOD and SHCE, I usually follow a policy of displacing as soon as I have launched my attack. The idea being is to get as far away from the spot as possible before the escorts will come looking for you when the explosion takes place.

Usually, I would go to flank, go deep, change course from the shooting LOB (often planning to exit out the back of the convoy), ... Generally, I find that flank gets me deep fast and gives me some separation from the search location for a 2-6 minutes before the escorts close the search location. Then, I go silent. If done right, I will gain enough separation that by the time the search starts, they are looking in the wrong spot. Usually, you can tell if you are sucessful by looking at the escort LOB on sonar. If they are all off to one side and appear to swing back and forth over say 10-40 degree arc (they are circling, but not around you), then you are sucessful. If on the other hand, they are circling around you, you screwed up.

So, my question is ... when doing this in SH3/GWX should I go to flank for the first few minutes after launching or will this make me too easy to hear? Should I instead clear datum running silent at 1KTS? (but then I will not displace very much) Or should pick some compromise in between?

Thanks.

Good question
I usually shoot then dive without waiting for impacts
Not flank but 4\5 kts or something till get a little depth then drop to silent running and 2 kts
Depending on where the escorts are changes the route I take
Usually try to head into convoy if am close enough and out the other side loosing stern tubes if possible

If I am quite a way from the convoy I head in the opposite direction to its course

I tend to do pretty much the same. Fire then dive, only going to flank when there are large enough explosions to cover my engine noise. Then running silent after the torps have hit. Seems to work pretty well so far :D

Nope:nope:

Its ultrasilent all the way for me.
Shoot from as far as possible and dive at 2 knots max.

If I can see an escort I'm instantly rigged for silent running till he's at least 5km away. They can't kill me if they can't find me.

I only use flank speed when I'm in the middle of a convoy when shooting, or at least one row of ships behind me, if outside, don't go to flank go to 4-5 kts max, unless there's an escort really really close (say within 1000 meters) then you have 2 options, stay slow and shallow, turn away 45 degrees and pray a lot, or go deep FAST because he's going to be on top of you anyway and dropping dcs so you want to dodge those, as soon as the first barrage has blown (and assuming you're not sinking by then) hard rudder port or starboard, set speed to 2 kts, and set rudder amidships as soon as you slow down to 2 kts, keep that course and speed (while still going deeper) unless the escort is not at least slightly behind you. If he's even slightly in front of you, try to figure out if he's heading towards you, if yes, turn into him, if no turn away, try to keep as many escorts in your 150 to 220 angle.

This works fairly well for me (have lost 3 boats to escorts so far in GWX, 2 because of my own stupidity (shallow water and maintaining flank speed to long) 1 because a type IX just doesn't really stand a chance against 3 black swans when earlier hull damage prevents you going below 120 meters) but have evaded succesfully after many more engagements, in all sorts of attacks on different groups of ships

I do what I call the Wiggle-Waggle.

Shoot
go flank at PD for 15-30 seconds
(depends of distance from nearest escort). Idea is to clear datun and getting boat's noise mixed with that of convoy.
turn port or starboard 20 degrees

Dive at high speed

on reaching 50 meters, order one knot, turn 20 degrees in opposite direction.

Inertia will carry me down to about 80 meters. Often, the escorts will never find me.

The wiggle waggle as Brag describes works for me pretty much every single time....even if I do screw up almost every approach.

i will usually try to approach the convoy from the two front corners at about 45 degrees in between the destroyer screens. Once i have penetrated this area and have lined up the bow shots at close range 1200 meters or less to furtherst target i will shoot and come about 180 degrees and fire at any target of opportunity with the stern tube.

once that stern shot has left the tube by now the first shots have started impacting.

this means that the presence of a U-boat has been detected, i will crash dive and order 150 to 180 meters depth... not budging from my high speed until i reach the assigned depth - flank speed all the way down. once i reach the depth i rig for silent running and make for 2 knots or less... if decoys are avalable i will deploy 2 of them... one at about 40 meters and another at about 80 meters on the way down.

depth charges always splash into the sea - but they never have come close yet to even shaking the boat and this is into the beginning of 1943.

in short... line up the bow shots, fire, line up a stern shot if time permitts... fire stern shot.. flank speed go deep dont let go of any speed until you get to the depth you want and then go silent at 2 knots. creep away like you were never there.
