Alright well its 1943 and I've been out on patrol for a little while in my career. I've expended all my torps and am heading towards the nearest subtender to reload. Its night so I'm running on the surface at a good clip and suddenly encounter a merchant. I closed a bit to get a better look and soon discovered that there were 3 large tanker/freighters on their own. I have been doing my best to avoid damage at all costs so I decided not to get involved in a deck gun shootout and continue on my preplotted course. I did send a contact report before resuming my course(which happend to be fairly parrallel to that of the merchants. I recieved the, "Good find X Will direct other assets to intercept X RTB at own discretion" message and close it and just as I'm beginning to ramp up the time compression the trail merchant goes down. I hurridly slowed the game back down just in time for the middle ship to explode and sink as well. Each ships demise has been logged into the little scrolling list that is constantly displayed. So I jump up to the watch and scan the seas until I locate the lead merchant. As I do, he too suddenly begins to explode and bursts into flames. All three ships sank quickly and I hadn't fired a shot. I looked into my log book and found that I had been credited with their destruction and their tonnage added to my total. Anyone else have this happen to them? Or have any idea as to why it may have happened?

That is a weird one!:o I would have guessed that another sub in the immediate area was sent in to attack, but the fact that you got the credit throws me!

Quite right, this one I have to try it! :D

With the "Launch Torpedo" button (NumPad "Enter") right below the "Increase TC" button are you sure you didn't accidently lauch three torps?

I used to launch torps all the time just trying to hit the shift key to move the exterior camera faster.

Nothings a bigger stealth killer than stalking up on a convoy and launching your torps before your ready. :p

I went into the commands cfg and changed the keys around.

Launching now requires Ctrl+enter, and on the keypad, the + is for TC with the Enter for 'return to normal time' which is a real handy setup. :yep:

I have accidently launch torpedos when I really wanted to punch up the time compression before, but in this case I did not. Two/three things make me positive of this. 1. I was on what was essentially a parrallel course, my position pretty much perpendicular to the middle merchant, and more importantly 2. I didn't have any more torpedos. I just finished firing them all off at the convoy I encountered before. Nothing in the log mentioned any tubes being fired either.

Ive come out of tc before while near enemy merchants and found that the crew has been blazing away on the deck gun and Im sure it wasnt left maned , dont know if this explains you happenings?

Maybe the deck gun was manned? I dunno.

I also had another wierd occurence today: I was sailing smoothly when I get a merchant spooted. Two merchants, large & medium. I open fire with the deck gun from about 3000 meters. First merchant explodes and sinks. No credit. I was like "Wtf!?". Then I proceed to shell the second merchant now under 1000 meters. He went down smoothly due to an even shell distribution across his hull. Still, I didn't get credit. The dam thing was sitting on the bottom and I wasn't credited for it. Took about 60 shells in all and I didn't get one gram of tonnage.

EDIT: There were no ship sunk icons on the map, either.

Funny thing is that my game crashed shortly afterwards. Lucky I save before each encoutner. I'm about to go check if it happens again the second time around.

While its possible my deck gun could have been manned and firing I doubt it. I almost never use the crew to man the gun and instead fire it myself to conserve ammunition so I'm pretty sure the button wasn't toggled for the crew to be on the gun. Finally the third ship went up while I was watching out of time compression. I couldn't hear the gun firing or see any shells streaking to the target in the dark. I wish I'd saved before that so I could run it through again but sadly I hadn't saved for a while...

H'mm seems strange.

Ive been messing around with the orders buttons and Ive enabled the
"report radio contact" function. Im not exactly sure what it does but sometimes when i click on it it will say "nearest contact 340 nm @ 340d" or similar. I think it may give the location of friendly boats , maybe even subs. so I spose it could have been another sub or ship that sunk your boats. maybe you get credit for reporting the contact. I'll keep trying the radio reports and when I get one close enough to investigate I'll see whats there.

You know the awnser to your senerio allways could be its just another one of those wierd bugs. Ive sunk ships before and not received credit but ive never come accross what happened to you.

It would be interesting to hear if others have seen this.

Strange. Are you sure no friendly a/c were in the vicinity? I've noticed aircraft are hard to see and hear until they're very close. Maybe your report generated an air strike? That wouldn't explain whyyou got credited though.

I think this chap has hit the nail on the head.
I was looking through some of the game files , from memory I think it was Airstrike in the cfg folder and I do remember seeing a section related to probability of friendly air strike on contact reports.

So its definatly a posability

If so why has no one reported it till now ?

I tried an experiment over the weekend. I came accross a large task force and had ony two torpedoes left. I fired off the two torpedoes and scored a DD and slipped away. I then radioed in a convoy report and recieved the "Good find will assign assets" message. So I decided to follow the convoy a while.

I followed for a day and a half and nothing happened. Maybe they were scared of it. It was probably the biggest TF Ive seen what with two carriers and some battleships, pretty sure one was a Yamato.

I've seen friendly aircraft bombing merchants before.

I was attacking a lone merchant and radar showed two more on an intersecting course. I stayed submerged and was looking for them with the scope in light fog. I noticed what looked like flames through the fog, and sure enough, one of the ships was burning. :hmm:

I surfaced and radar picked up an aircraft that got identified as friendly. I saw him drop another stick of bombs on the same ship.

This was without any kind of report from me.

Me too... well sort of. I reported a small convoy of sampans that I didn't feel like shooting and got the "Good Find RTB" message... and kicked up the time compression. Soon I saw a friendly blue aircraft streak by at warp (TC) speed on the map. Didn't sink anything, but it seemed to try.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did sink them for you to get credit if you stay in visual range. Would be interesting to try and find out.

Thats what I was trying to do with the Task Force. Since I read this thread I figured as Im out of torps I may as wall call it in and watch the fireworks and get lots of "free" renown. But nothing ever happend.

Lets see....well It was dark when this all went down so its very much a possibility that friendly planes took out the merchants. I almost wish this would happen to someone else because I'm starting to feel like a liar. Only other pertinent info I can offer is that this occured in the small straight that runs North/South directly east of Rabaul and the Bismark Sea.

Very familiar with the area. I have never spotted friendly planes. In fact I was on my way to there when I picked up the convoy a bit south and east.

But Ive never witnessed a true "response" to a sighting report.

Doesent make you a liar just means Ive never witnessed it.

When I was looking at the files regarding air attacks and contact reports there were several factors involved.

The convoy you report on must be in range of an allied air base and even then there is a probality factor involved.
From memory I think it was about a 20 percent chance of an attack occouring.
So reporting on a convoy in no way will guarente an airstrike.
