...and loving it!! So, I am on my first patrol, sailed on Sept. 1st 1939 at around 16:00 and currently is the early morning of Sept. 2nd., passed the Kiel Canal and moving North/West through the North Sea to go to my patrol grid, AM51. One question, when I hit F1 for the Help and more info, I see a tab for Germany's Enemies, but all I see is a bunch of commands (navigation ones I think, I don't have it in front of me right now)... shouldn't it already have Poland? Can I expect to see Britain and France by tomorrow (game time)?

Also, three other tabs with no info are: resupply info, and flotilla news 1 and 2... is that normal?

Thanks!

Yes that is normal. Just click on the entries with your mouse.

Sink'em all!!!:arrgh!:

That's what I mean, I click on Germany's Enemies, and a list of commands pops up to the right, but no enemies... with the other three, the resupply and news tabs, I click and the right panel is blank... no info at all!

Are you running SH3 with German text?

If so, have you installed patch v1.03? If so, are you running the Alternate Flotilla optional mod?

Basically versions of GWX earlier than 1.03 have erroneous German menu and Help files which cause the problem that you have outlined.

Now, if you are running with English text, then it is likely an installation problem. Perhaps you didn't disable all mods or rollback SH3Cmdr (if using) before installing GWX or a subsequent patch?

Oh man, I was fearing it was an install problem  I am running with English text, didn't have any mods prior to GWX other than SH3 Commander... which I think I did the roll back... but who knows for sure... so my steps were, clean SH3, patched to 1.4, SH3 Commander, played one game, deleted campaign, roll back, install GWX and patched to 1.03. Mmm, now I noticed that the tab with the U-Boat locations is also blank... does any one know of a workaround to get these to work?

Did you install the Cfg file for Cmdr ? :hmm:

Javigato
05-27-07, 09:50 AM
Yea, I did replace the 4 GWX/SH3Commander files,

Randomised events.cfg
Ship displacements.cfg
Ship names.cfg
U-boat availability.cfg

According to the readme on GWX102+Cfg4SH3Cmdr.zip where I got them, those are the only ones there... are there any GWX/SH3C files I need in order to make those fields in the F1/Help work?

I found the file that has this info, in my Ubi/SH3/Data/Menu folder, the file is en_help, I opened and the fields that I can't see in game show up in the file like below... any troubleshooters out there that can help a poor soul resolve it? Thanks a bunch!

What are the registry entries? Are there any more other than the ones under local machine/software/Ubisoft?

I think I might do your suggestion Gengis, but I might wait a little since I am in the middle of a campaign, and really doesn't seem to be affecting it other than what I described... Thanks!

No,should be the only registry entries, you mentioned.Just look up there for everything regarding SHIII,Ubisoft in Local Machine/Software and delete all items found.

Personally,I am nearly 100 percent sure that your problem will dissapear as soon as you start running GWX patched to 1.03 without SHIII Commander.Observations are based on my personal experience - I just run GWX v.1.03 on the clean 1.4b patched SHIII and everything works just fine.Read your post yesterday, and looked into those "F1" fields - everything is shown correctly, flotilla news, help issues, milk cow locations etc.

Well, the choice is always up to you.Good luck,Kaleun.:D

Do this TWICE. The first time ensuring that SH3Cmdr has been rolled back first, and the second time with SH3Cmdr files installed (in other words, load SH3 via SH3Cmdr, then alt-tab back to Windows and check SH3's en_menu.txt).

If your results differ, well, you know what the problem is, LOL! ;)

If your results are the same, then, well, I will still bet it's an installation problem. What you are experiencing is NOT normal and is not experienced by players with a correct GWX installation.

PS: I've assumed that there was a lot more to the Help file than what you posted.

I only included in my earlier post the sections I am having trouble with, the rest are cool. One thing, when I checked how the text showed here, and compared it against the en_help text file, the entries in the en_help seem kinda out of whack... meaning, for example in the list of enemies, the first few seem that they are with th same spaces in between country and dates, but then on some entries there's a bigger gap between the country and the dates... I don't suppose things like that could be causing the problem, right? I guess if someone can send me their en_help file I can compare it and see...

"Out of whack" is OK.

TBH I see two options:

1. Continue to add to the 36 hours waiting to figure out what's gone wrong, or
2. Trash the install and spend 10 minutes following the below steps:
0. Rollback SH3Cmdr
1. Uninstall SH3 via Windows' "Add/Remove programs"
2. Open Windows Explorer and:
- *delete* the folder where you had installed SH3
- *delete* the \My Documents\SH3 folder
3. Reinstall SH3
4. If your SH3 did not come with patch v1.4b already included, install patch v1.4b. Ensure you install the patch that corresponds to your copy of SH3 (Download/DVD/EMEA/US)
5. OPTIONAL: Copy and paste this "clean" install as a backup to avoid the need to follow steps 1-3 if your game becomes corrupt in future
6. Visit the GWX homepage (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/) and download into the SAME folder GWX.exe and the five .bin files. While there grab the v1.03 patch
7. Run GWX.exe and follow the installation prompts
8. Run GWX103.exe and follow the installation prompts
9. SH3 COMMANDER USERS: Visit the GWX homepage (http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/) and download the GWX 1.02+ Cfg files for SH3 Commander and unzip the contents DIRECTLY into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder.

Your call though. ;)

Ok, I am backing the clean/patched to 1.4 install of Sh3 to a disk. One question, I noticed that the fr_help and fr_menu are missing after patching (didn't check after clean install) I do have howver the engligh and german ones... is that normal?

Next, I am planning on installing SH3 Commander, then GWX. Is that the proper order, does it really matter? Thanks and sorry for all the (possibly really dumb) questions! :)

When you install the GWX you should run the JSGME embedded within the file once to create a 'MODS' folder. You should see a choice called 'Fix French'.

Ok, did all the uninstall and install steps specified above. Clean Sh3 install, patch, install GWX, patch, install SH3 Commander. Started a new career via SH3C and I still the same problem!

So, when I hit F1, the first entries are cool, but once I hit Enemies of Germany, instead of getting the enemies (Sept 1st 1939, so it should be Poland at this time) I get the keyboard entries for Time Compression, Even Camera, Periscope and Snorkel Control, and Free Camera Control... :hmm:

Then I get nothing for Resupply Info, Uboat & Distance Info, Flotilla News I and Flotilla News II.

I can see how maybe the last ones are not applicable this early, and hence could possible be blank at this moment in the war, but the Enemies of Germany weirdness puzzles me...

Other than that, the game is running great, and I don't see anything else unusual...

When you install the GWX you should run the JSGME embedded within the file once to create a 'MODS' folder. You should see a choice called 'Fix French'.
If they're not then I'm afraid I'm stumped mate. lets hope Jaesen comes along soon :hmm:
The fr files are not included in stock SH3. French language support was a half-finished inclusion to patch 1.4b. The files are usually installed as part of a specific French language pack (the French community had to essentially finish the feature). As SH3 does, however, support the third language (as opposed to all other languages which are simply en replacements), GWX included a French translation by default.

Re your problem Javigato, I have no idea. But it's 100% GUARANTEED to be an installation problem, otherwise 10,000 other players would have noticed it. I certainly don't have the problem.

Yea, I suppose it must be an install problem, otherwise like you said, it would be more than 1 person with the problem... The weird thing is that the files the screen is referencing (en_help and en_menu) seem ok... I wonder if I need to look somewhere else, I hope there's a way to manually fix it...

Thanks!

You know, I was thinking, I ran the SH3 installer with my normal user, I did not specify to run as the Administrator, then for the 1.4 patch, I had to run it as the Administrator, otherwise the patch did not recognize the SH3 version. Then for GWX and SH3Commander, I ran them as the normal user, not Administrator.

Do you guys think this could be it? That unless I run everything as the administrator the installs are suspect? Just wondering, since I am running out of ideas after looking and relooking at the files hoping to find the problem

I would recommend you go back to post #14 and follow the instructions to the letter as an administrator on your computer. :yep:

Thanks Jim, I will try that and see if it resolves it.

Back in this post... :) Uninstalled and reinstalled as directed in post 14. I did again the clean install of Sh3, this time made sure I ran it as Administrator, reboot, install patch 1.4 also as Administrator, reboot, ran GWX as Administrator, reboot, ran GWX patch 1.03 as Administrator and rebooted.

This time I decided NOT to install SH3Commander, just to see if I can start ruling things out, and I can confirm that the problem is not SH3Cmdr related, because I have the same issue with GWX 1.03 and no SH3Cmdr.

As a precaution, I verified the installers and bins, and all checked out prior to installs... I really don't know at this point what can be causing this, and how to correct it, especially since I am the only one with this problem... :damn:

The good news is that the game runs fine, so that's cool, and this missing fields in the F1 are not "required" and I should just let go and enjoy the awesome game this is with GWX :D

Thanks to all that have chipped in so far to help me out, I really appreciate it, and if someone has any other ideas, please let me know.

I'm getting annoying, aren't I? ;) So, does the F1 list of options/info really read off of the en_help file? I just tried modifying some entries in the en_help file to see if they show up in game when I hit F1, but they don't, the lists are the same as prior to making the changes, so me thinks the F1 information is being read from somewhere else... Any ideas?

As per the SH3Cmdr help file, you MUST run it under the Administrator account.

You MUST also install GWX under the Administrator account.

Ummm, yeeessss...

A fundamental question, how many installs of SH3 do you have? If more than one, are you sure you are running the one you installed GWX into? You certainly wouldn't be the first to say no. ;)

Failing that, email me your en_menu and en_help files (email address is in ther SH3Cmdr Help file). I'll have a look.

Morning JS, I only have one install of SH3, and this last time I did everything as Admin. Anyway, sending you an email with the files. I appreciate your help!

OK, this is Vista related (guys, pls specify if you are using Vista when posting problems as it DOES make a difference).

I'm posting this here as I don't use Vista, so can't help much further.

Basically, SH3 is ignoring the installed files and referencing a cache storage of the original files. I am aware that this can happen with Vista thanks to its permission based approach. Indeed, I can recall that some players here have experienced this very problem. However, what I can't recall is how it has been fixed.

So, hopefully someone here can recall and find the thread/post that provides the answer.

Thanks JS! Silly Vista :D Anyway, like you said, hopefully someone will see this and point me in the right direction about this. Thanks again.

Yep re-reading again now, and I have a suspicion as to why this is happening, like JS said Vista is probably not recognizing the new en_help and en_menu files... why? Well, this whole time I have kept a folder in the desktop named "SilentHunter Stuff" and that's where I kept the exe's for GWX, SH3Cmdr and some backed-up files (perhaps even en_help and en_menu, not sure)... so when I uninstalled and removed everything related to SH3, I never touched the desktop folder, since I needed to install the mods... so with VISTA as picky as it seems to be, I think I need to keep that folder somewhere else (burn it to a CD or DVD or something like that), so when I uninstall again it has NOTHING what-so-ever in the harddrive related to Sh3. Then install again, making sure to run everything as Admin.

The weird thing is that when I checked those two files in the Sh3 directory they looked like the GWX files, but as JS pointed out to me, when I attached them to an email and he opened them, they were the stock files.... so weird.

Well, I will try this tonight, I'll let you know how it goes, hopefully I can report some good news!

Thanks again to all.

Also after uninstalling, I think I will do some disk clean-up and see if I can get rid of any files that are cached...

I am pleased to announced I got it to work properly!! Did all the things I mentioned, and now everythings seems cool with the F1. Sounds like it was Vista's indexing and caching causing to reference (some) of the original SH3 files instead of using the new GWX files.

Thanks to all of you who have helped me with this, I really appreciate, you guys are the best!
