View Full Version : Any way to save so as to avoid bug issues?

Alright well this has happend to me a couple of times now and I eventually had to scrub my first campaign because of it...So everything seemed great, campaign going well. I saved my game, left came back the next day and loaded up. 1. Interior of sub always now shows the glass in the gauges shattering and falling out, and damage is reported even though I show 1. No damage and 2 wasn't recieving any when I saved. I am also not under attack by anyone at the time of load. Since then I've had a couple of CTDs(I think these are related to my using the external camera as thats when i always happens.) and more vexing I've been chugging along and suddenly my sub will suffer sudden catastrophic damage, for no reason. This results ultimately in my sinking. I looked through the forums and found a little saying that you shouldn't save while submerged. Any truth to this? Should I restart a new campaign? any other advice?

I can only tell you that with both SHIII and SH1V, I only ever save at the map station, and I always rotate the saves between two files. In other words, I'll save to 'TDK1' and then about five minutes later I'll save to 'TDK2' and then back to 'TDK1' again five minutes after that.
This means that if there was some corruption/error with one of the saves, I can use the second save which will be within five minutes game play of the lost save.
I have never had a bad save or encountered a problem with either SHIII or SH1V using this method.

Ok I will try to save more frequently. I did some more looking through the forum and found some information that may be relative about bugs within the sub damage system. Somehow it seemed as I recieved damage, it would show itself as repaired and everthing looked fine and operational, but inreality the sub was still operating as if damaged to an extent. According to redwine something to do with bulkheads not registering as repaired thus pushing up crush depth. Eventually my saved career has become worthless as my sub appears to be fine and without damage, but apparently enough has been registered that crush depth has been raised dramatically. If I even attempt to submerge in that saved file I instantly suffer catastrophic damage and plummet to the bottom with massive flooding. I believe I saw a bit of this earlier on a previous career, but nothing to this extent. I saw evidence of this when I got in a brief exchange with a gunboat and was hit with a shell right before the gunboat went down. I looked at the damage, decided it was minimal, saved, then looked again at the damage and it was all gone. I didn't recieve any messages regarding repairs. Hopefully whatever bug I'm experiencing is addressed in a mod or 1.3 Enough rambling from me.
Not so much a bug as our generation of war movie goers are too optimistic as to what damage can be survived or repaired. Save often until you get a better feel for the game. Don't take risks you aren't willing to suffer the consequences.

This seems pretty accurate. At first I simply assumed that since it seemed all damage was fixed that things were fine and I could repeatedly recieve decent damage and recover. Since these issues have arisen I have been more cautious and tried to avoid damage at all cost. No more deck gun battles with destroyers for me.
Very interesting story of a Uboat that went guns to guns with a Canadian escort (captured from another thread here)...

*Writes down new saving method*
There is another issue a different style of saving technique will mitigate.
There is a small problem (similar to some sound issues fixed by patch 1.2) where a certain state of the game is activated AFTER restoring a game save and not before, namely crew fatigue as a result of weather.
I have not been able to discover the trigger point (how much wind it takes for the crew to have fatigue retracted) but after sailing on the surface in rough weather and although the current crew fatigue appears normal when saving, upon restoring the game, interior crew will have their fatigue set to near 100%.
I have found saving submerged eliminates this problem.
