You just sunk a tanker. You haven't finished reloading the tube and the sound man reports another contact. It's another oil bearing argonaut, 15,000 tons waiting to go to the bottom.

Sounds like a Kaleun's dream, Right?

Such an area does exist just 50 hours steaming from Lorient. Tanker Alley, a route where frequently you can sink 2 or 3 tankers in one day!

Presently, after 21 days of going up and down the Alley trying to pinpoint its exact location, I'm sailing home to Lorient with 135,676 BRTs under U-123's keel.

As a reference point (Datum) I have used the detailed Kriegsmarine grid

Picture provided courtesy of ReM
http://uboat.net/maps/images/grid_quad_41.gif

When you look at the chart below, you can see the datum is located at grid BE3936. This is an area if any other ship is present it will be within hydrophone range.

I have confirmed the exact location of this route by running 3 patrols here from May to December 1940. The tankers are always there, though, you should expect a few days without contacs from time to time.

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o207/Braguine/fsscr271.jpg

If you measure 10 kms south of the BE36 boundary and extend a line of 240 degrees it will give you the route of the tankers. All the ones I have encountered where northeast bound.

Bear in mind, not all tankers travel exactly along this line. Strangely enough, I have intercepted tankers transiting the Alley at headings somewhat different than the direction of the route. Besides tankers, I have intercepted Large freighters here and one whale factory.

I've tried to sink all ships by using one torpedo. A magnetic torp at the engine room or an impact just at the rear of the forecastle are usualy fatal, but it can take a long time for the tanker to sink.

Good luck Kaleuns, we should see some good tonnages from fishing on Tanker Alley :know:

 Nothing like that.

It's just, as Brag has brought it to our attention, it may get changed/reduced as it seems a source of very high tonnages :yep: or maybe better protection will be offered to these sitting ducks.

Have to wait and see what the campaign scripters say.;)

Go for it, Danlisa!!

No way that in RL, ships would continue to use this route...they'd either spread out or go elsewhere, or call for better protection.

I'm a bit worried as to what the next installment may bring:o is the happy time to vanish altogether,I'm hoping that there will be some balance to this, its just that as soon as someone finds something juicy in the game someone else chirps in with "that won't happen in GWX1.04"I'm all for realism and that but I hope the baby's not going to be thrown out with the bath water in the constant striving for a realistic experience:hmm: ;)

I agree. In RL even if they were using the same route, a ship's distress message would alert everyone that a U-boat was in the area.

Speaking of better protection: In one year (39-40) of GWX, I've ran into 5 battleships and sunk them all. Only once I was persecuted by escorts after the deed.
My tonnage in general is a bit on the high side, too.

I did get a nasty surprise when chasing after a fast troop transport. The blighter opened fire at me with several guns including a shower of flack. This caused a lot of damage, though no casualties.

After Danlisa's comments, I see Kaleuns scrambling out of the harbours and heading for this elephant bone-yard before GWX 1.04 shuts down the easy pickings :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

And rightly so! Mr Brag

IRL if anything like your killing spree were to happen you'd be happily cruising along looking for the next juicy floating bomb and kerblammo the brits have just invented the Hunter/Killer group, and your their first guinea pig...

Then again, they'd probably have a Bogue or something along, and those are good tonnage too:arrgh!:

I have no luck sinking BBs they seem to be heavily damaged but sail on nonetheless, and no time to put in another fish to make sure because of escorts...

Since you seem to have attracted the attention of the GWX crew, they might want to have a look at the Cunard Liner damage model (see also screenshot thread) because 1 hit kills on one of those seem a bit unlikely.....

now I'm off to tanker alley (while it's still there) :lurk:

brag, I will check this out in '42 and see what results I get - as last "tanker alley" I tried from the happy hunting grounds thread (BF13) was not producing any tankers at all for me when I spent days patrolling that alleyway. It did seem to produce an abnormal amount of destroyer escorts patrolling by themselves though! I'm wondering if its because i'm in 1942 and you were patrolling that area earlier in the war..

It seems my current kaleun has something against the British royal family, sinking both King George V and the Prince of Wales

as an addendum to tanker alley, if it's slow going there, go one grid north to AM7x that's convoy alley...they keep appearing (at least in 41)

I've stopped by "tanker alley" twice now, first time ran into 2 tankers and a large cargo in 5 days of patrol, second time found nothing in 8 days of patrol:nope: eventually ran into a convoy that crossed into TA but it was very bad weather, managed to sink 1 large cargo and 1 small tanker along with a great lakes freighter which was pointless for the tonnage it gave me.So all in all not the turkey shoot I was expecting,I think if your in BE39 at the right time with the right conditions then you could get lucky, but it doesn't seem to be tonnage heaven,if anything its an abject lesson in tedium and patience:-? I suppose what I'm trying to say is that yes you can get lucky there(sometimes very lucky) but not as frequent as you'd think,be prepared for days of nothing and then finding that the one contact you get is not a great big juicy tanker but a bloody passenger/cargo:damn: If the GWX team want to have a look at something its the damage model on those damn things,22 105mm HE shells into one,8 below the water line,I checked, and it still manages to sail on with barely a drop in speed:nope: just look at that again,105mm High Explosive shells,22 of them!!!!!!!!!!Its a shame the people who built them didn't build the titanic,it would have shrugged of that iceberg no problem

Just returned from there, altough just found 2 ships in about 8 days, I slowely headed back, and ran in an unarmed, unescorted convoy.. total tonnage 59,000 and not a scratch! (january 1941)

In that month you can expect a convoy crossing the alley, heading west.

Anyone find a repeating mini convoy consisting of 2 large tankers and 2 other big vessels in BE39?

I found and chased this group multiple times only to find that the tankers are Irish and thus neutral...I've stumbled upon them at least 3 different patrols...

Next time i'll sink them anyway...:arrgh!: I've got more than enough renown to take the hit.....

There is also a fast moving merchant that appears in BE 39 at intervals...

I haven't been able to actually spot it, because it is really fast, but maybe a passenger liner...

Hi guys

I've been to the caribean to find a good tanker route on the southern coast of Curazao, tankers come from the east and west and then head to the port. Most of them are American, so it's a bit useless to go there before the US enters the war.

The sad part of the story is the long journey from Europe, but tonnages around 130 K are not uncommon.

Cheers

My personal favorite hunting ground is BF17 from the northwest corner down to the middle, then a full zig zag patrol accross it's deep area. I then proceed to do a nice full out patrol of the square to the left of BF17 (BF16 maybe ? I forget). I do about 90% of this patrol underwater at a depth of about 20 meters. I'll spend as little time surfaced in these two grids as I can. This area for me is now the home of the largest artificial reef in the world. Pretty soon, the ships are going to have to plot around the area or they'll crash into it. There has to be QUITE a pile of ships down there by now considering the numbers I sink there.:yep:

Also... when I go a little bit to the west side of the letters/numbers BF17 and set a perfect south course, somewhere along the rout between there and where it intersects with squares near Girbraltar, I always run into tons of ships on that line. I assume this is part of what everyone is calling "Tanker Alley".

By looking at your screenshot and comparing it to the ubisoft map that comes with Silent Hunter III you have found a shipping route that is used by single ships of the same type in this case tankers. There are 11 such routes in Silent Hunter III. These single routes did exist for Cargo ships, Tankers, Passenger ships etc.

I hope GWX doesn't remove these routes completely, but rather reduce the number of spawns for the ships in these areas if a change is required.

Just my input in this area.

Maybe out of habit or maybe to see what BBW has done, I've been prowling around tanker alley. It is still there but is much wider. It takes a lot more work to hunt down the tankers. Had I not charted the original route and use it as datum it would have been difficult to identify.

In GWX2.0 I patrol part of th time in perpendicular course to the route at medium surfaced speed making frequent listening dives.

Thank you for your helpful information guys I am glad the routes are still there. After Danlisa's post I thought the routes were removed or going to be removed in the next release. I'm starting my 3rd patrol in GWX 2.0 and thanks to a short patrol grid mission I will have time and fuel to investigate some of these areas.

Sincerely,

Kaptain Hans Wolf

Tanker alley and single cargo routes are in the stock game. If you have the Ubisoft Map that comes with SH3 then you can see these routes by the dotted lines. You need to investigate these routes to find out what ships travel them.

Convoy in sight. Grid AL03. Course 100. Speed 8 Knots.
3 Lg. Tankers(the big 12kton kind), 2 Whale Factory Ships, 3 Intermediate Tankers, 3 Nipian Parks, Sm Tanker, and a Modern Tanker... all protected by 3 Flowers and a Polish Bourrasque Class. I got the large tankers and the whalers almost 70ktons.
This is the first large tanker convoy I've seen in GWX2.0, so maybe there is a new tanker alley?
Happy Hunting!

i have "stock" SH3... Feb 1941... 3rd day of patrol in BE39 only one small tanker (sunken with deck gun on 1st day of patrol) but at end of day 3 (time was 23.15) i bumped into a convoy NE corner of BE39 (2x T3, 2xC3, one Troop Transport with 3 deck guns!!! on it and bunch of C2 and merchants) this is guarded by 2 hunt II, 1 VV and 2 Flower Corvette! (shocking for me :o as i used to see convoys with max 1 DD and 1-2 trawlers/corvettes)

Try GWX!!!! If 1940 and 1941 are anything to go by, Heaven only knows what we'll be facing later in the war - especially during the second half of 1943 onwards. I can hardly wait :o, but I have a feeling that lots of people - me included - may want to reconsider their "Dead is Dead" philosophy.

Welcome PB_2006 and goog hunting .

Found HMT Aquitiania near Tanker Alley yesterday. I picked it up on sound and it was moving fast......after a short chase I found it doing slow speed.....

After doing a submerged approach to avoid being seen, I found it had stopped and was actually sinking! Couldn't figure out what had happened....it was only mildly bad weather. I guess a ship of that size should be relatively seaworthy; so probably an attack by another sub?

I fired one torp while it was already going down fast, but still got credit for the kill! 40 K+ tons in one swoop....

I don't know whose kill I stole; probably need to buy him a beer when I get back in port.

Very good luck!! That's awesome. I haven't found one of those in career mode yet, however, have managed to sink one in multiplayer and it took three eels to take her down.

:()1:aahhh...that's better!!

Long live the sunken Aquitania. You probably stole it from Balz and his career is ruined

Hmm, Tanker Alley. I just finished patroling BF15. I still got a good number of torpedoes left, so I'll stop by there and sink some tankers.:D

lol I see you guys are talking about a different kind of "Tanker Alley".

Indeed. :p

Hmm, rhymes with mugs. Getting off-topic here.:p

Edit: I visited grid BE39 last night. I sank a small tanker, one T2 tanker, and 2 T3 tankers. I had to use my last 3 torpedoes on the last T3 though; she was stubborn to go down and she didn't sink until after the 3rd hit. For the most part, I sank them during rough seas and fog.
