I put SH3 down for a year after Starforce seemed to have royally screwed up my computer. Well - I just reinstalled last week, and have GWX up and running, and it's a blast. My first career out I got killed on my 3rd patrol. Learned the AI is no longer very stupid early in the war, and that convoys seem to have a lot more escorts :arrgh!:

This time out, I'm playing it a bit more conservative. Only have 6000 tons going into my 3rd patrol in 1939.

Anyway, I get wind of a convoy around AM51. The weather is terrible. Heavy fog, rain, and big seas. I'm hunting around for it for 5 hours. I can hear it, just cant see it. Then, out of nowhere, I almost run right into a small cargo vessel, not 200m away! Shame it was Norwegian. I dive and find another one, this time a brit. I surface and sink it with one eel. Then as I'm turning away I see a Dido Cruiser turn toward me. I dive to 140m, dodge 4 escorts for about 1 1/2 hours, then make it topside. Find the convoy an hour later, repeat. This time I almost run right into the transom of the Dido. The weather is so bad, no one saw me until it was too late. I shot 2 torps at him using the Uzo and a boresight engagement (if there is an equivilent in sub-speak). This time, I didn't even dive, I just turned away at flank. No one came after me. I then found another cargo ship (British) and sank him using the same technique. This time a DD forced me down. Came up after a couple hours of depth charges, reacquired the convoy, and repeated. Not only was the weather still bad, but it was now dark. I found myself snaking through the convoy, search lights occasionally lighting me up. No one could get a bead on me for more than a few seconds. Even though my remaining torps either missed or were duds, it was an awesome ride.

In 1939, I highly recommend trying it out. Just don't do it in 1941.

Yup, it doesn't take long for the escorts to learn how to dispatch you to the GWX Vallhalla in low visibility. :dead:
