I have found a 100% reliable convoy attack method that is a sure fire winner. Sneak into a convoy and fire off your first salvo. Once detected (I am using Trigger Maru so I am always detected) go to ahead flank at periscope depth.
Leave your periscope up so that the destoryers always know where you are. Crazy you say? Not really.
When a DD begins its attack run order hard to port/starboard so that you can turn inside his turning circle. This will put you into a position where he is crossing your T on his attack run.
Now here is the best part. The DD will slide nicely over your stern just aft of your conning tower (you can get up close and personal with the DD deckhands through your scope at this point) and begin dropping charges. The best part is that the charges never explode shallow enough to do any damage. And since you were at flank speed you are out of the way of the side throwers before they do any damage.
Now if you really want to "Be More Aggressive!" you can do this. As soon as his last charge goes off order full back emergency. Since the DD will always circle around for another run this puts him directly in front of you. All you need to do then is:
1) Turn off the PK
2) Lock the DD on your scope
3) Set the speed on the TDC to 0
4) Set the spread of a torp to 20 deg left or right (depending on the direction of travel of the DD). This allows you to lead the target.
5) When he hits 0 deg bearing quickly update the AOB to 90 deg (important!) and then quickly fire! (Dont forget to open the tube door first!)
You will hit the DD 8 out of 10 times. :arrgh!:
Now, is this historically legit or am I exploiting the weak AI or bugged DM? You just cant get killed at peri depth if you can maneuver.
