The Sonary Home/End keys are old hat.

But the "turn to periscope heading".... sweet...

You learn something every day. :up:

The latter is also old hat. ;) They were added in back in a SH3 patch.

One I just recently noticed. The keyboard map has the tab key as the zoom. Well it zooms in, but there's no zoom out. Using the tab key you just have to cycle through the zoom levels until it starts from the max distance again. I found that very annoying. Then just by accident, I left clicked on the magnifying glass in the nav map, and I noticed that it zoomed in. About a minute or two later I right clicked in it and it zoomed out!! It gave me a chubby!! I was like," where the heck was that bit of info?? Then a bit later, also in the nav map, I accidently discovered that if you have the center scroll wheel on your mouse, rolling it one way zooms in and rolling the other zooms out!!! By this time I was at full attention!! :) Doesn't take much to make me happy! Anyway, also on the bridge, the wheel button also toggles the binocs. The person who came up with that manual deserves a good smack down!!! :)

Heading to view "=" and companion key is view to heading, "-" just to the left.

View to heading followed by heading to view is useful to get your heading spoken and printed. Just remember to return to plotted course ;)

= heading to view
- view to heading

those keys are in the key map that comes with the game ... not undocumented

If you look at your sh4/data/cfg/commands file using a text editor " notepad " youcan see all the commands.

A good one is shift f2 when in the command room. You get free camera. :arrgh!:

U-Bones, Jmack and Stew U-582,

I missed that view to heading command. I will check out the cfg later today. WhatI mean by undocumented commands wasthat the these commands did not show up on key card. Those keys are grayed out.

home and end keys also serve for sweeping manually with the radar. You must first stop the rotation, then you can sweep around with those keys, exactly like you do with the Sonar:up:

I'm surprised noone has mentioned the "crash to desktop" a key before the patch...

There are a lot of commands that got left out also, but you have to re-add them in the commands.cfg file. My favourite being WP_Identify_Target....(I hate trying to ID a ship at 0/180 degrees AOB)

home and end keys also serve for sweeping manually with the radar. You must first stop the rotation, then you can sweep around with those keys, exactly like you do with the Sonar:up:

You can also use the mouse wheel to rotate the radar, which to my knowledge, is something new.

Okay, hang on....

This is becoming a really useful thread.

Are these listed there, but just not assigned with a key? Or do we have to manually type in the command?

If so, can we get a list of possible commands we can add?

Please and Thank You.

PS: I suppose the response to the WP_identify _target is text that appears in themessage box? (no audio)

Here are three commands I put into my commands.cfg file that others might find useful. The first assigns the enter key to returning time comp to normal, replacing torpedo firing (too easy to do accidentally, its now ctrl+enter):

[Cmd6]
Name=Time_compr_normal
Ctxt=1,2,6,9
Key0=0x0D,,"Enter"

[Cmd313]
Name=Fire_torpedo
Ctxt=1
Key0=0x0D,c,"Ctrl+Enter"

And these two allow radar to be turned on/off, and to order the sub to radar depth (called snorkel depth in the game):

[Cmd142]
Name=Radar_toggle_on_off
Ctxt=1
Key0=0x52,,"R"

[Cmd195]
Name=Snorkel_depth
Ctxt=1
Str=1033
Key0=0x52,c,"Ctrl+R"

I noticed there's a "report weather" unassigned in the commands cfg. Anyone try enabling that one?

EDIT: ALso, what does the 52 in Key0=0x52,c,"Ctrl+R" mean? I want to set up the weather Key, but not sure about those numbers.

jhelix70
05-22-07, 10:43 PM
Gah, I forgot that one!! Here's what I did to enable weather reporting:

[Cmd261]
Name=Report_weather
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F250006
Key0=0x57,c,"Ctrl+W"

the #x## designation that is first in the key0= entry assigns the actual key, not the thing in quotes. little c indicates ctrl is pressed with it.

Probably we can use the SH3 SetKey 1.11 programme for SH4 as well... Here is the link:
http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches05/SetKey1_11.rar

Then there was a little programme that translated key pressed on the keyboard into SH format so you can copy paste it into the .cfg, I could not find it right away though, anybody?

Sweet Jeebus, my good man, thank you!! I can't count how many times I've accidentally pressed the Enter key and fired off a precious torp. :oops:

Hmm. I did that last night. I was sneaking up on a convoy when I accidentally hit the enter key while trying to increase time compression. I figured that it was gone and was hoping to not have any negative side effects from it (there were 4 matsuki destroyers around and I did not want to meet them). Well, I continued to sneak up behind the merchants to get lined up for a kill when I see a message telling me that a torpedo impacted. I was surprised since this was several minutes after it should have hit any of the merchants. Turns out that it critically hit one of the destroyers on the far side of the convoy. Made for an interesting mission I thought. Most lucky shot ever. lol. BTW. I plan to use those shortcut key edits... thanks for the code.

Saaay... Can anyone tell me which command in the .cfg file is the "estimate range at current speed" order (as in SH3)? It should be somewhere in the Navigation Officer section, but I can't seem to find it... :-?
Thanks!

Has anyone found the key that wipes out the TDC contents and fires a torpedo where my periscope in looking (automatically switching from bow or stern tubes according to the direction)???? I've been looking for that one for some time and am going to give some IJN destroyers a rough time when I find it.

Found this by accident. Center your sub on the navigation map by pressing Ctrl and clicking the left mouse button at the same time. Helps when you're just wanting to follow along.

Maybe I should just host the keyboard layout that I use, containing the whole TM keyboard scheme plus shift-i for CE Identify Target. TM has had ctrl-enter for fire torpedoes since May when I first tried it. You RFB guys should really be nice to Ducimus and use his whole keyboard scheme. You should also look at some of his control key assignments, which are more similar to SH3 than SH4, but have the incredibly necessary attack map mapped to the F6 key. That alone puts me in the TM camp. Thank you for listening to this shameless hucksterism. You will now be returned to your regular programming.:up:

I recently found a useful command (albeit not a keyboard command), try using the mouse scroll wheel while in the Sonarstation, you can use it to 'aim' your sonar (ping) very accurately. Very useful when making a bad-weather 'sonar-only' attack.

Saaay... Can anyone tell me which command in the .cfg file is the "estimate range at current speed" order (as in SH3)? It should be somewhere in the Navigation Officer section, but I can't seem to find it... :-?
Thanks!

For those of you keeping track at home, the command is CMD_Report_time_to_turn in the Navigation Officer section. Which does not immediately jump out at me as the command you'd issue for an estimated range at current speed, but there you have it.

A little history lesson to all you keymap impaired Captains.:D

CCIP posted the first mod for SH4 on SubSim namely " setkey mod"
which mapped the keymap to SH-3 The same day we preorder Capt's got our grubby mitts on it.:D

It also included new keys for most if not all functions you've posted and a few more. All are shown on F-1 key.

This keymap is also used on TM.

We can all thank CCIP for makeing SH4 easier and better from day one. :up:

This is good stuff. Thank you.

Ditto on the 'enter' fire key. I keep trying to move the exterior camera quickly with the shift key, and accidently hitting the enter key.

"Firing Tube One"

Huh? What? WAIT!

:D

Movie with Sidney Poitier.
Near the end of the movie the US Destroyer Captain says..."If they fire one, we'll fire one...."

Weapons station responds "Fire One!" and fires off a subroc (tactical nuke, I think.)

The Soviet Sub responds with their own tactical nuke torpedo and both the Destroyer and Sub are vaporized...end of movie.

Skippers,
I think this post could be of some small use. So far I have found through other posts two undocument keyboard Keys and thier fuction.

1. Sonar/hydophnes usin home and end keys at deepth
of atleast 60 feet.

2. Set course to periscope heading using the = key.

Are there any other undocumented keys please post them and thier function. This would beof great helptous new skiipers out there.
.................................................. .................................................. ...........

I have always used these keys for these functions both in SH3 & SH4. They aren't so marked on the pullout reference cards listing the key functions which come with the game though.

A good one is shift f2 when in the command room. You get free camera. :arrgh!:

And right mouse button to go back to normal station view

It's a shame they didn't set it up like that for all the stations. The only way you can wander all over the upper deck is through a mod (TM).*

Is there any way to bind the "send data to TDC" red button on the attack data tool to a keyboard key, say the space bar ?

Howdy everyone. Is there a key that instantly stops time compression or do you have to click back down incrementally on the - symbol.:hmm:

Can someone explain (in layman's terms) how to add a keyboard shortcut for going to the Attack Plot Map? I can't believe there isn't one already.

Just a bump because I'm hoping someone can tell me how to do this.

1. Using Notepad, open the Commands.cfg file (make a backup first).
2. Find Command 34:

[Cmd34]
Name=Attack_2D_map
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F020009
;Key0=0x75,,"F6"
Page=0x32000000,3741

3. Delete the semi-colon so it looks like this:

[Cmd34]
Name=Attack_2D_map
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F020009
Key0=0x75,,"F6"
Page=0x32000000,3741

4. Find Command 19

[Cmd19]
Name=Deckgun_camera
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F020005
Key0=0x75,,"F6"
;Key0=0x79,,"F10"
Page=0x38000000,3707
GoBack=Conning_deck_camera

5. Add a semi-colon to disable the deck gun camera, like so:

[Cmd19]
Name=Deckgun_camera
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F020005
;Key0=0x75,,"F6"
;Key0=0x79,,"F10"
Page=0x38000000,3707
GoBack=Conning_deck_camera

6. Save the file and test it in-game.

Pressing F6 will now bring up the attack map instead of the deck gun. If you don't want to disable your deck gun hot key, find a key that isn't being used (using Notepad's "Find" option) and plug it into Command 34 instead.

I use the Keyboard Configurator to modify the commands.cfg file. Something I did to solve the firing problem was to assign the F key to firing torpedoes. Now if I lay my hand on the the keyboard with my index finger on the F key, my ring finger rests on the W. I can set up a firing solution, fire a torpedo, switch tubes and fire without moving my hand.

I would like to claim I had that planned from the beginning, but you probably all know by now that I'm not smart enough for it to be anything but a happy accident.

I'd kill for a key that instantly took me to a specific time compression, say 1500x or 2000x - which is the common compression I use while patrolling. Is there a way to modify Time_compr_normal in such a way?

I'm sick of jamming on the '+' key all the time.

You could modify the time compression parameters in the "main.cfg" file found in your "My Computer" Documents folder (not the one located in the SH4 game folder).

[TIME COMPRESSION]
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=1;4
CriticalDamage=1
CrewEfficiency=32;1
AirEnemyDetected=1;0
SoundEffects=2
CharacterAnim=4
EnemyDetected=1;0
RadioReport=8
Particles=8
PrayState=8
HunterState=32
3DRender=32
Maximum=32

The above are my current settings ... by limiting TC to x32, I never worry about being bombed by aircraft that "show up out of nowhere" ... or running into small islands. But, if you like, you can try changing either "TimeStop" or "RealTime" to a higher number (multiples of 2) and see what happens. Be sure to make a backup copy of the file, though ... just in case your changes don't do what you want them to do.

;) Experimentation is half the fun of modding.

Holy cow! You're playing the Pacific War at a *maximum* time compression of 32? Doesn't it take you half a day just to reach your first patrol area?

Of course, I'm sure someone out there plays exclusively at 1x time. IMHO, if you want the game in real time you should just play "War in the Pacific."

I know there were a lot of diehard fans who played SH3 at x1. I don't see how that would be possible in SH4. From Pearl, that's an almost three week journey through an oceanic desert. If you see one sampan along the way it's a major event.

WITP=great game. :up: I just wish the AI was up to the task.

You guys use programmable joysticks ??? I have a complete CH setup for Flight Sim - makes it simple... I have one button to advance the "TC" button x 4 times with a single key press... Get's you to 2048 pretty quickly... If you wanted - you could submit any number of key strokes to get you to 2048 with a single press... Then another to return to (x 1) normal time - hits "pause" then advance "TC" x 1... Works really well and coudn't live without it...

Not sure if this has been mentioned in this long thread - but - press <Ctrl> when raising or lowering the scopes ,<Page Up> <Page Down> and the scopes fully raise or fully lower...

I was one (in SH3) ... and, yes, it takes a long time to get from Pearl to Japan (in SH4) when playing in real time. That's where the radio and phonograph come in handy.

:ping: It's also why I gotta keep close watch on mods ... so as to time arrival back in port with release dates of those I've been waiting to download and install.

WITP=great game. :up:

From what I've read, it's turn-based. An RPG. Interesting for awhile ... but I prefer simulations. RPGs are more of an intellectual exercise from a god's eye point of view. Sims are more "up close and personal."
