All Skippers,
I just recently bought SH4 and patched up to ver. 1.2. Well I am getting this :
1. Click on play, OK, the sim loads and I go through the opening intro movie. The sim will close the movie to desk top. I then will click on the bottom tray showing that the sim is operating and onced click I will see that SH4 is not responding. I have to close this optionand shut down sim.
2. Open my computer and click on drive where the DVD is located and the game will go through every thing and be playable.
3. Tied first start from desktop icon with DVD in drive. Same thing will happen as indicated in 1). Re try Icon and game plays OK.
I was wondering if this is a bug and can I disable the opening credits and movie?

There are several mods you can get that will delete the intro movie and credits. Only one I know about right offhand that does that is the FTT mod from Ducimus. I'm sure there are others.
If you want to do it manually, browse to:
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Movies\Intro
and delete (after backing up!!!) the two files:
Intro.wmv
Logo.wmv
Then make two new zero-length files and give them the same names. No more intro movies!

Bug.
Happened to me when I first got the game. You don't have to delete them, you can simply rename then and then it will work.
Nice introduction to the trials and trevails that come with playing SHIV.
A bug is something repeatable that's coded into the game that would affect everyone. This is not a bug but something unusual concerning the hardware or drivers for a few people.
I suggest looking into DirectX and video drivers and make sure your video card is supported for the game.

FYI this step isn't needed if you delete manually.
Mods only include the zero-length files because with the current JSGME there is no way to remove the files altogether. Thus the workaround is to replace them with non-movie files.

Did you patch the game with a clean install without actually starting the game before applying the patch?? I installed 1.2 after playing 1.1 and had problems. I uninstalled, rebooted, then reinstalled the game and applied the patch right away. It's been pretty stable ever since. Good luck.

I had a problem initially by not updating DirectX also. Even though it said it was the same version I already had - there was something new in it and installing the DX that came on the DVD fixed it right up.

Yes I did a clean install, runnin Direct X 9.c that comes with the DVD. Patched 1.1 and then patched 1.2. No problem with the sim so far just have to start the sim twice.

Perhaps it is your DVD-ROM.
I had issues forever with anything Starforce with a certain DVD-ROM I had. It was still funky with SH4. I've since got a new one and it doesn't give me any guff. I had SH4 time out a bit too often before.
Maybe the copy protection not working well with your drive?

NefariousKoel,
I got a new cpu, Gateway GT5414E and a GF7900 GS card. I have no problems with anyother DVD game. Have issue with one CD-ROM title though, BOBEarned in Blood.
DVD will not read the setup.exe. Other then that no problems. Thats it for now gotta get ready for work.

My best guess at this is that it may be a random glitch. I say random lightly as it may happen over and over for you, but not for everyone else. Try a fresh install w/patch, maybe with a restart thrown in before and in between. Or it could be a software/hardware conflict as suggested above. Everyonce in a while I get a strange glitch that crashes me, so far nothing that has repeated itself over and over though. Save often. Good luck.
