Am one of those who picked up SH3 from the $20 bargain bin, just the other day.

I haven't felt like this since delving into Morrowind. The immersion aspect is outstanding. Cool.

Welcome to SubSim

If you like SH3 you should try one of the Supermods as Hunter suggests. In my opinion GWX is by far the best. Have a look at the manual to see if you like it http://files.filefront.com/GWX_MANUAL_ENpdf/;6783155;/fileinfo.html. If you do click on my signature or on the link under it to download the game.

Enjoy your SubSim Experience

Welcome and enjoy SH3 as said before if you like stock GWX or one of the other supermods will blow your mind:up:
Too view what GWX brings to the table you can view the online manual to see for your self.

Have picked up GWX, I bought this game as many work members discussed SH4 and how it didn't live up to SH3. Which I took as SH3 was a good one. I was after a sub sim anyway and was considering modern attack sub type games. Edit "but also sims from yesteryear".

In the last post I mentioned Morrowind, my favorite game by far. It successor Oblivion had prettier graphics and was meant to be better but in my opinion just lacked something. I'd call Morrowind a %200 better game. Lesson from this is that earlier version can often be something special.

Which brings me to SH3. It seems to have all those things I like. I wonder if SH4 will/can live up to SH3.

Thanks for the replies,

Regards,
shwell.

I daresay SH4 will get its day in the sun eventually, after all, SH3 had its problems too when it was released and had some real issues when new, such as multiplayer constantly bombing out etc, but with patches and mods it has matured into a great sim, and the fact that it is still massively popular after quite some time is testament to that. Any real submarine sim fan will certainly look forward to seeing SH4 reach that stage.

But in the meantime I, like you, am enjoying SH3 more.

Yes, slight vent of spleen over disappointing Oblivion. Will move on now...

Can you tell me what hardware you have? I have a P4 3.4HT and a FX5700 128MB. In SH3 explosions significantly kill frames but haven't a measure. But I couldn't care less as it's not important as the need to attack multiple enemies seems non existant.

Would you mind telling about SH4 and your hardware?

Shwell...

The desktop PC that I use for SH has the following:

Intel Prescott Pentium 4 530 (socket 775 LGA) which has a core speed of 3006.8 Mhz and a 1024 KB L2 cache. Bus speed is 200 Mhz and FSB is 800 (ish) Mhz.

Mainboard is an ASUS P5GD1 with 2 gigs of RAM on it.

Graphics card is a PCIx Radeon X800GT

It has three hard drives, one of which is a Lacie (F.A.Porsche) USB external, the other two internal ones being a Western Digital and a Seagate. There's a lot of other stuff plugged in, such as Track-IR, printers cameras etc, so it has a heavy-duty PSU.

It also has a lot of (slightly noisy) additional cooling (not a big deal with headphones on).

Runs recent games and sims such as FSX, SH4, ARMA etc with no problems whatsoever (ever so slight slow down when everything is cranked up in SH4, but nothing you couldn't live with), then again, I did build the thing myself and chose the components very carefully so they would work well together and this might have something to do with that, as it is hardly cutting edge these days. I have a lot of other PCs and some Macs, some of which are newer and better specced than the above, but since this one seems to handle stuff okay, it's the one I use.

:D Chock.

I saw Silent Hunter III in the bargain bin as well, it costs about € 6,- over here in the Netherlands.

Finding a game for that price between the rubbish is like finding a priceless Renaissance painting in a pawn shop!

Anyway: welcome and happy hunting......

I have immersed myself in SH III for the second time and I still love the game after all this time...

Congrats on a well spent $ 20,-

Wilkommen zum Subsim, Herr Kaleun! I hope you enjoy the game. For GWX you might want to think about a system upgrade. I recently upped mine just so I could go on enjoying SHIII and it is worth it.:yep:

Gute Jagd!
