View Full Version : I just saw U-505 exhibit.
If someone would give a hint to this dumba$$, I'd be more then happy to post some of my mediocre shots. Have to say the experience was chilling. Got them on my easyshare folder. No interior though.

Welcome aboard, 1480!:sunny:
There is an official website, with pictures and a virtual tour, but I'd still love to see yours, and hear your own perceptions.
I visited U-505...in 1962.
I was in quiet awe. The last time I saw it was in 1979. I'll progress with my observations as I post pics:http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/2045/1000030hv4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
1480, Welcome aboard
You're making a worthwhile contribution to this nest of skallawags
While waiting in line to get inside, one of the guides gave a background to it's new location: a 4 million dollar wing of it's own, that is a memorial to the US naval forces during WWII. In a sense, the centerpiece of a mantle or trophy case.

I would so love to visit U-505 someday. Read Hans Goebelers memior from cover to cover at least three times over. Im green with envy :D
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4677/1000018iy2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)Appreciate the welcome. Little background; I bought SH3 when it first came out but was very internet "illiterate" and did not know these sites existed. Plus I got a virus that corrupted almost every god-forsaken file in my hard drive. I was not aware of the patches, mods etc that UBI and the great people here invested so much time in. Well I discovered this place when I bought and got to running SH4. Search engines are on par with sliced bread IMHO. Anyways, since I surprised my wife with "Wicked" for moms day, she bit her tongue when I suggested the museum to take our 3 y.o. out for the day. Win/win I must say.http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5682/1000024qd9.jpg (http://imageshack.us) My bad on the repeat.
Playing a sim, you never really have a real perspective (hey I'm 100% slavic, so I tend to err alot) of dimensions till you actually see it in real life. The VII was much larger then I pictured it in my "minds eye." When I get through with posting the outside pix, I will tell you when being inside, it felt tiny. I say this because I couldn't believe the size of the "fish". I liked how they set it up for display because it looks like it's been launched from the bow: http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/8066/1000036cp2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

if you are referring to the U-505 being much larger than the type VII you viewed in your minds eye - U-505 was a type IXC and would have been much larger than the VII boat most folks play in SH3

GR thanks for actually even taking time to reply to my mindless rants. Reason why I said VII, I was thumbing through "WOLFPACK" by G. Williamson and he typed it as a VII on page 261. Then I did a bit more hunting and I'm way out of my league. No wonder it threw me for a loop when I saw 2 aft torp hatches inside. Thanks for clearing that up.

Someday....
Read Hans Goebelers book on his experiences as a crew member on U-505. I guess when he was still alive he would give inpromtu tours if he was at the exhibit.

Yeah you still get to go inside but NO photography. They have the Enigma machines and other stuff in display cases in the main display area. I got a few pix of those that I will post soon.
The gun platforms, there was a job not worth getting a tan over (farmers one at that). http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/3130/1000023ey7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Closer look at the fly swatter. This one was mounted on the ground:

Nice:up: On Google Earth I was looking at Breverhaven, you can see a Type XXI that is on display there.
For those that have not used Google Earth, great little program for seeing the world. In the larger centres\cities, the detail level is pretty amazing.

I will be there 28th of june.. I will be on my way to Vasteras "Power Big meet" classic car show in Sweden. For that I have to take the ferry from Kiel to Goteborg. When I am that close I cannot skip a tour around U-995.
 afcourse pictures will follow !
Figure I would show one of the top prizes of the capture, one of two Enigma machines that are on display.http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4953/1000035ai8.jpg (http://imageshack.us) I'm lousy with the camera....

I am wondering, what's the big deal about taking pictures? Are they afraid of loosing revenue from the admission? Still I wouldn't mind seeing this exibit someday.

These rare color images of U-505 were taken by Richard Cosby as the boat was towed into the Chicago river in June 1954 - This was just prior to the boat's installment at the Museum of Science and Industry - Photographs courtesy of Richard Cosby

Not too sure. If Bill Wirtz (owner of the Blackhawks) is on the board of governors, then this would be the case. It's only 5 bucks a head to get inside. When I quoted 4 million about the exhibit, I realized I was mistaken. I remembered that was the cost of MOVING U-505 from the lot to it's new home. About a million per 100 yards distance traveled. To me, the photos are nothing more then a teaser. You really cannot get the true feel for what it's like to be inside. I finally got Das Boot and watched up to the point of the 1st dive. It fleshes out the dimensions a bit but it still is not the same. Am glad I went through it before I started to watch the movie. Great so far...... And the interior pics are top notch! Thanks JC. RDP, that pic could be photoshopped, and I bet 89% of that photo would be still correct today sans the u-boat and Seagrams advert.
Thanks for all for share your photos:up:

For what it's worth, I have dealt with museums in the past photographing medieval artifacts.
If you write a letter in advance to the curator, explaining your academic interest in the subjects at their museum, many will allow you to take photographs for your own private use (no publishing). You may have to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
The key here is to write in advance, and present yourself as a person with true scholarly interest.
No offense, but if you present yourself as someone who likes uboat video games you may not get very far - just like the Dungeons and Dragons players who present themselves at museums wanting to check out the "+1 sword" or whatever (you know what I mean).
Most of the people working at museums have a passion for what they do. When they identify someone else who shares that passion they will usually accommodate you if they can.
Steve
