What is the benifit of putting the rudder "amidships"..?.....

Amidships merely means on the centreline of the boat. Not actually "in the middle of the ship".

So, obviously, it's better to put it in the centre so it can manouver the vessle easily, rather than off to one side.
edit So to put the rudder amidships is to go straight ahead.

The only dumb questions are the ones that never get asked.

And to further that notion....there are no dumb questions, just dumb answers!

clayp,
Do not feel dumb. Ya aint they only one ta ask that question. I asked that one in my newbie post also. This I have found that this community and flight sim comunities are different then the rest. The people in these two comunities are friendly, supportive and willing ta get Ya an answer to any question ya have. All Ya need ta do is just ask.

We were hoping to have a good impression. We only get one chance for a good first impression! Looks like we have done well on this one. Welcome aboard Marine. Oh yeah, I answered your Newbie post.;)

Oh hey, I think I have a marine insertion somewhere in the Luzon, are you part of that team?

Who needs a rudder!....

I once heard that all you need is a strong wind at your back and a star to steer by.
