Hi everyone, I am very new to Submarine simulations with SH3 being my first purchase in this genre. I have been lurking around these forums for quite a while now without posting because of my very noob status on this subject. I have since bought SH4 but am awaiting more RAM for my pc before I can get my hands stuck into this one.

Falcon 4.0 has taken 2nd place for awhile after discovering how good this Sub stuff is :)

My enthusiasm for anything submarine/naval combat has exploded after playing SH4 briefly. EBay has made a lot of money out of me with all the books I have purchased on this subject recently.

I want to learn more about submarine tactics both modern and old. Also I want to learn more about the destroyer’s capabilities and tactics especially with regards to SH3 and 4. In the game I always get killed by 1 or two destroyer’s zig zagging on my location as I approach a convoy. Do they have excellent radar range or sonar capabilities (please excuse my noob definitions of these terms).

I have got my hands on a copy of Dangerous Waters with all the huge manuals etc. I can’t wait to get stuck into that lot even though I’m lost in the first paragraph of the many manuals that came with it (but secretly I love all that).

Anyway if you could point me in the direction of some good tutorials with regards to tactics etc I will be most grateful.

Welcome to the forums and the community! This was made for Sh3, but most of it still applies to SH4: http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/ . The Kriegsmarine's U-boat Commander's Handbook is in print in an English translation; you can order it from Amazon.com for about $15 if I remember correctly. There's a sticky thread at the top of the forum that has some tutorials linked in it as well.

Welcome aboard, Muley!

When approaching a convoy it's usually best to do an "end around", which means staying so far away that you can barely see them, and running out ahead of their path. Then submerge and go as slow as possible to avoid sonar problems. Never leave the periscope up more than a few seconds, to lessen the chances of them spotting it. If you've done all this properly you should be in a good position to attack them without being detected.

Play the single missions at first. We have one advantage over any real captain: we can't be killed. So the best advice I can give is practice, practice, practice!

Another 'lurker; gives the order to surface! Welcome aboard Muley :D

It seems you already know one of the best submarine tactics, if you have been shadowing us all for a while, eh?

In addition to the DW forum, I presume you know this site for Dangerous Waters stuff:

http://www.subguru.com/

If you want older US sub tactics, there's plenty of info on this forum, or you could try the real thing here:

Enjoy - Chock :D
