This is why I find the US gun laws ridiculous.

Please tell me that it isn't true.
In fairness, I believe this has less to do with gun laws and more with dumb bureaucrats :hmm:
Eh, lack of common sense for ya...
Again to be fair. It sounds ironically that these people are responsible law abiding gun owners.
Its the parent who gives the baby the gun yet doesn't inform the authorities I'm worried about

Next on the news:
a 10 month infant kills parents with a shotgun.
the fact that you can get a license at that age, is crazy.

I'm not worried about 10 month olds with weapon permits. I'm worried about adults who have them.

Wow! You need a permit to own a gun in IL? Since when has an American needed a permit for a shotgun??? That is plain stupid. If this state was operating normally and allowed the shotgun under American law, then this wouldn't even be a story!

I worry about the adults who don't have any kind of basic weapons-safety habits, permit or not. Responsible parents are capable of teaching responsibility to their children -- irresponsibility generally goes the same way in my experience. I also worry about the ones that fire their AK-74's and AK-M's at weddings rather than buying a string of blackcats (http://www.davesfireworks.com/brev_files/blackcats.jpg) or sparklers. In the evil land of America, blackcats are still easier to get ahold of than 7.62x54mm rounds.
Her Majesty still better think twice about that Quartering Act of hers.

I still like the ignorance and myth displayed at Americas gun laws! It is quite entertaining! :rotfl:

I don't see what the big deal is. If anyone has read the article the dad said teh gun will stay at grandad's house till the kid is at least 14.
Sounds pretty responsible to me.

By the way, do you have a harder time getting a hold of Blackcats than 7.62x39? I do. Its probably a good thing though since I didn't know I was supposed to shoot my AK-47 instead (I think he said 74 though which doesn't use 7.62) at the weddings I attend so I will probably need to go get some - and the easier the better!

Well, I read it this morning as AK-47. Interesting.

There's a few discrepancies in the article that I'll point out:
1st: Cho didn't get the firearm via a loophole, as under Virginia Law his court-ordered attendance to an outpatient facility can and does constitute involuntary commitment to a mental institution. The judge dropped the ball on this one.
2nd: For anyone who cared to read the article, the child won't even see the firearm until he's 14.
"Mr Ludwig said Bubba's gun would likely remain at his grandfather's house until he was 14. "
With this in mind, this is obviously a political statement to embarrass the beaureaucracy that has enforced these opressive laws against firearms owners.

I'm not going to wste my time to worry about someone who bothered to jump through endless hoops to get a FOID card. I'd be more concerned for the criminal who isn't going to jump through all the hoops to get a FOID card.

Fireworks are a lot harder to get than ammo. Especially, good fireworks. I had a friend who would drive 20 yours down to "Pedro's South of the Border" in South Carolina to buy a boat load for July 4th every year.
If 7.62mm x51 is hard to find, it is only because shooters have bought up all the surplus.
I remember when .45 was dirt cheap when the military switched to 9mm, but even that is not cheap to shoot anymore.
Shooter bought up SKS and AK's for same reason. 7.62mmx39 was dirt cheap, and a great little plinking round due to its relatively low velocity. Plus, it was cheaper to shoot than .22 LR.

It is harder, and I think it is more expensive too to find/buy fireworks. Weird huh?

Good point.
The way I see it is, people who think this way are really too immature to own firearms themselves and this is simply a cover to explain why they should not own firearms without stating the obvious. A form of passing blame to everyone as cover for their own misfailings. If Sigmund Frued were here, I think he would agree with me on this one.

The idea that the government should be the only entity to have firearms scares the hell outta me.
The people need to be able to defend themselves in case their government becomes opressive. Hence, the American people need to be able to obtain firearms.

And however unlikely - the possibilty of invasion always exists too. The US may seem like it is, but it is not omnipotent.

Not suprising. What caliber do they consider large enough? 9mm? Seriously, there's no exception for antique muzzle loaders? Even Massachusetts has that.

What about Sharps Rifles? They had all kinds of weird large calibers, and were made in the 19th Century. Are there exceptions for those?
