Heya,

Im currently playins SH4, but ive run into a slight problem. Every time i start a carreer i need to make my way to japan, but i dont have enough fuel to make it, even when i stop at midway on my way there.

So how do i make sure i can get there and back without running dry?

Thanks fellas!

Tedious as it seems, you have to 'cruise' there on a slow setting. someone posted that the most economical speed to go at was 10 knots (dunno whether this is true). Also, there are apparently some issues with the map distances being inaccurate, leading to greater fuel usage, so economy is essential on limited fuel settings.

I usually go at 1/3rd since you can encounter stuff en-route which makes me in no hurry to get there.

If you really can't be arsed with it, just pick the unlimited fuel option - not realistic I know - but then again, being unable to radio for fuel 200 miles from Pearl if you've run out isn't realistic either!

If you get stuck without fuel on a campaign mission, but don't want to abandon it, you can go into your documents folder and change the settings on the SH4 config files to 'unlimited fuel = true' (you can open them in 'notepad' or any similar text program to do this), which will get you home if you reload a saved game.

Also note that (unrealistically) the batteries will charge even if you are out of diesel, so you can submerge and crawl home is you are out of gas.

Full speed to Midway, then refuel and "slow" speed to Japan (the 2nd notch, about 8 knots). I get there with 65-70% left. You could do "flank" speed to Midway, but I try to avoid running at at flank for long periods because in RL it would lead to breakdowns. Wish they had engine breakdowns in this game.

... and dont be a leadfoot in trying to chase down those convoys.

Sometimes they just get away. :smug:

I've read a couple posts here and at the official UBIsoft forum about the fuel consumption issues. I'm assuming it's a bug and hopefully it will be fixed in the next patch. In SH1 I never have a problem with running out of fuel. Although I couldn't run flank speed everywhere. Judging by the comments I've read on it, that version was modeled closer to real life.

I did, once. Because they teleported you to and from the patrol zone, and they had the marker showing the line at which you had to head for home, and because they had so many more ships than anybody ever encountered, you usually ran out of torpedoes long before you had to worry about fuel.

The time it happened to me I started in an 'S-Boat' out of Manila. I was still out there when the Philippines fell to the Japanese, and I didn't have enough fuel to make it to Surabaya. Oh well.:dead:

D'OH!! :damn: I forgot all about that teleporting aspect! :) That's how long it's been since I played. But you didn't have a full tank of fuel either! I believe they were typically around 3/4's full at the start of a patrol.

Flank it to Midway and refuel. From there to Japan manually set speed at 10 kts. Once you arrive to Japan you will have just over 3/4 tank. Plenty to do the deed and make it home as well:up: Thankfully there is TC we can use to get there:D

After re-reading Richard O'Kane's fine book, "Clear the Bridge" the method described above--setting speed to around 10 knots for the cruise to Empire areas-- appears to be historically accurate.
It would be nice if you could modify some of the ballast tanks to carry extra fuel for extended range (hint, hint);) just as was described by O'Kane.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

Just a thought but have any of you tried using TimeTravellers mini tweaker on the sub your using and just alter the range from 15k to 20k or whatever you call realistic.

This way you dont need to activate the unlimited fuel option and you still need to keep an eye on the fuel gauge!

Into sub files, the max range is adjusted to a determined value at 10knots, then the maximun range speed is it, 10knots.

Really, it is at 9.4knots, may be for the wave drag factor, you adjust power for 10 and have 9.4knts.

Any knot above or under this value, reduce dramatically the max range.

I think so if you want a bigger max range speed, you can edit the files and adjust the max range at diferent speed, may be 12 or 15... then it will be you new economy speed.

Thanks everyone for the good advice, i will use it next time in the career mode!
