Hello all Kriegsmarine Aces of the Deep!:)
Nice to meet you again, people.Just sharing my impressions on my most tremendous success in Silent Hunter III Dynamic campaign so far.
I started an absolutely new campaign in January 1st,1942 with 10th Flotilla located in Lorient.I passed first patrol and then edited the Patrol_O cfg file for the same first patrol giving myself a 1000000 of Reknown and a nice name for the submarine-
U-999.
Started the first patrol again and took command of perhaps the most superb submarine of the Kriegsmarine Type IXD2 U-999 with all possible upgrades for that time-MAN Buchigeblasse Engine,FUMO-29 Gema Radar,KDB,S-Gerat Sonar,Alberich Anti-Sonar Coating,"Fake Targets" launchers etc.Submarine was also fitted with type IX/3 Deck and Flakzwierelung Anti-Aircraft guns.
I have choosen the most experienced crew members from the all available personell.
All upgrading took 1.5 month and on the 24 February 1942 U-999 was ready for her maiden patrol.
However, first two patrols were of moderate success, about 35000 tonns each, thus short in their duration.
In the beginning of my third patrol I was sailing along the Spanish coasts after completing patrolling the patrol grid.
Suddenly,I got the report from BDU,saying that "Royal Oak" class battleship has just been spotted close to the harbour of Gibraltar. One thing took my attention-
Bearing WSW and.....speed "Constant".I understood what that meant immediately.
I rushed surfaced to approximately 30 miles west of straight of Gibraltar then submerged to approximately 150 meters depth, turned on "Silent" mode and started moving through the straight of Gibraltar.
Having the 35 percent realism I managed to go through the straight of Gibraltar submerged, batteries were discharged only when there was perhaps 30 miles left to the Gibraltar Harbour.
I waited till the night, surfaced and made a short passage recharging batteries.Luckily,Gibraltar just full of British ships had some calm places.
I submerged again,to the depth of approximately 140-150 meters (Gibraltar Bay approaches are very deep, perhaps the deepest I had ever been to).In "Silent" mode I started moving towards the constant Sonar contact, that was coming from originally somewhere just between two docks of Gibraltar base.
There were crowds of ships above me,merchants,Cargo Ships, destroyers,Passenger liners but I was heading towards that constant sonar contact, measuring depth all the time and going as deep as it possible.
When there were 1 mile left to the contact I surfaced to periscope depth.I saw perhaps the most magnificient view I have ever seen-huge port with two docks opposite to each other, lights on (that was early morning) and...."Royal Oak" class Battleship riding on anchor just between two docks of the port.
I did a small correction of position to the Gyro Angle of 000 and fired the first torpedo (TIG7A).At the impact angle of 90 degrees it bumped off the hull of battleship like the tennis ball and slipped under the ship.Second torpedo hit the battleship as well as third, fourth.Still no serious damage.I reloaded torpedo tubes.
Fired 5th torpedo, the battleship took fire.A fast torpedo boat started rushing towards my position and and zigzagging on huge speed just in front of U-999's nose.I retracted the persicope and fired 6th,and 7th torpedo.Battleship started sinking.I fired the last 8th torpedo after getting the report "Enemy Unit Destroyed".
So,it took me 6th torpedoes to sink the "Royal Oak" class battleship, taking into account that first torpedo bumped off and the last was fired on when the battleship was already sinking.
The Gibraltar base was alerted and four destroyers from Coast Guard rushed searching for me.They surrounded me.Then more destroyers joined the search from passing by convoy.Being at the 30th meters depth I gave a "Crash Dive" command and turned speed up to 3nots.Buuuuump!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am lying on the bottom of Gibraltar Bay.I am detected by sonar (stealth meter red).I started praying and asking God that everything I want to was just to get - 15 Miles South. Please, give me the chance to reach position - 15 miles South from here, where waters are deeper.I desperatically started launching Fake Targets, then checked the hull-it was almost undamaged after landing on the bottom on 2 knots speed.
I gave command to pump air into Air/Water tanks and set depth to 30 meters.U-999 took off the bottom and started heading south meter by meter.I was measuring depth each three minutes and going deeper meter by meter.Gradually, crawling almost at the bottom I reached the 50 m depth when I was spotted again.I fired the last salvo of Fake Targets and made 35 Degree Left - 35 Degree Right maneuvering.
Thanks God,they lost their signal.I am leaving the Gibraltar Bay - depth is already 100 meters.Very silently I proceeded 15 miles South-East into the Mediterranean.
Waited until the last warship sonar contact was lost and surfaced.Still had some fishes, but exited the patrol. There was just too much rush,I must say I have never, really never experienced that much rush in my life,I never heard my heart beating that much.....:) But I am so excited,I am so excited!!!!:D
So,on May 3rd,1942 a Type IXD2 U-999 commanded by Lieutenant Genghis Khan sunk HMS "Royal Oak" class battleship in the port of Gibraltar. In game,I did nearly the same Gunter Prien made in reality with his Type VIIB U-47.
And,in concluding I would advice to everybody who is going campaing in January-May 1942 to visit Gibraltar Bay.Satisfaction Guaranteed! :D
Good Hunting to All Kaleuns!:D
