Growing up as I did during the Cold War, I always find it odd to be able to see the kind of pictures of Russian subs that NATO probably would have killed for years ago.

Nice find! Having said that, I'm slightly disappointed having seen the whole thing. That's one of the ugliest subs I've seen in a long time :(

Superb!! That's what we're looking for, Bravo Zulu Kap and Linton.

Now let's get a proper look at her...

I like the look of this design, the area fore of the sail looks a bit more streamlined than the Deltas, although the sail is a bit further back than usual with boomers (not including the 'phoon)...and the stern of the sail looks interesting...I haven't seen that sorta thing since the days of the Foxtrots and Echos...and no bad weather conning tower windows either...that's a different idea from Russia, particularly on a flat sided conning tower, makes sense though.

I guess the area at the stern of the sail will be for the comms line, or the towed array...although that's normally a rudder or aft planes job.

No kidding. I'm a bit suprised that these have come out already, the Russians usually like to keep things close to their vest.

It took nato from 1977 to 1996 to learn the names of the typhoon submarines it was only in 2001 that the offical list of names for the submarines including the ones from the 1950's were released to the public.

today its a bit more open.

With the way her conning tower sits on the bulge for the missiles, she should be fairly easy to identify.

Yup, Russia has changed a lot for sure. I did actually go there in 1979 when it was all still very secretive, and it was an enjoyable trip too, although we were shepherded about a bit and I suspect steered away from some stuff.

Incidentally, for those of you into the Russian stuff, I recommend the book 'Russian Submarines - Guardians of the Motherland' by Wayne Frey ISBN 0 - 7414 - 3447 - 4

Black and white pics only, and the repro could be a little better than it is on some of the pics, but if you want a lot of pictures of the 705, 971 and 941 subs (confusingly aka in NATO as the 'Alpha', 'Akula' and the 'Typhoon'), this book is worth a look.
