 Hi all,

It's been along time since I have posted here but in saying that I have been a Silent reader of this great site called *Subsim*

I would like to thank all those people out there that have put in a huge effort over all these years fixing and creating fantastic Mods.

SH4 is and will be a classic one day just as SH1 now is! it's just a real shame that Ubisoft couldn't have gone back and had a good long look at SH1 and incorporated some of the features SH1 had mainly the Radar and Sonar interfaces to me they captured the look and feel of that period more IMHO.

All these great graphics we now enjoy do add to the game play, but the feel that you got playing SH1 just felt more in tune with that period of time, even the manual which came with SH1 was a much better effort at setting the player for a Subsim experience.

William "Bud" Gruners short films were great to watch and one could only imagine what life could of been like for these truly remarkable hero's.

Here is hoping that SH4 and maybe future Subsims get that feeling back that seems to be lacking in SH4 IMHO....

Cheers to all

I had kept an outdated computer running Win 98 so I could play SH1 up to about 4 years ago. It was an excellent game and very enjoyable. SH4 could have benefitted from some repetition of some of the features of SH1. However it acheives such an immersive experience with its incredible graphics and random patrol experience it has supplanted SH1 and I will not go back to SH1.

Any lacking features will undoubtedly be included in the mods that are designed by people like Beery, Ducimus and Captain Cox.

In the end, we end up with a great basic game that each player can modify to suit their own taste and interests. Thats the best thimg you can ask from any development company. A good basic structure that you can hang what you like on and come up with something uniquely yours.

I could live without the bugs that have been noted, but I'm grateful that Ubisoft stayed with Silent Hunter long enough to produce this game.

THANKS DEVS
THANKS MODDERS

I wonder how much it would cost to purchase Silent Hunter Commander's Edition from the original developers ... Just do the code for MS Win XP and MS Vista and tweak a few graphics and release for $29.95.

I don't need the crew interaction ... after all I am the captain, my mouse is the XO and the keyboard is the crew. :yep:

Sh1 is still ahead in some things if compared with sh4

Radar is clear, easy to read and funtional, and there are a batitermograph, great ramdom campaign with almost the same single missions in sh4 and sub vs sub engagament.

customizable vibility distance, good damage screen, some heavy flooding can damage electric engines after some time.

Great maps graphics,

IA have a realistic behaviour, merchants start evasive maneuvers when your torpedoes are detected or explode and destroyers start to look for your boat, firing at your periscope if is spotted.

Captain cabin with calendar, log book, and recognision book.

I gotta tell ya, I too have been waiting 10 years plus for this game. I bought SH2 and 3 but never got into them. I guess because being a yank, I just couldn't sink Allied shipping. Although who couldn't like Curt Jergens in "The Enemy Below"! :)

I too have the original SH1 and the expansion disks! I also have the Commanders Edition. 2 copies!! LOL!! And I too have a 98 box just so that when the mood strikes me I can patrol the Japanese shipping lanes. I waited with baited breath (anchovies no less!) for SH4 when I first heard last year of it's development. 10 years plus in the waiting, and the day is finally here. I bought it right away. 2 copies even and sent one to my brother. Now I find myself hesitant to take the plunge, from reading all the negative posts on another forum. I did the tutorials, and immediately found that the manual was less than helpful. But I do have a fairly beefy system:
2GB+Athon processor
2GB RAM
GeForce 7800 GS Video Card (256 RAM)

I'm thinking the game will be fairly stable on my system. I played the tutorials with patch 1.1. Installed 1.2 and haven't even started up the game out of fear of disappointment. I have to admit reading some of the posts here, I'm starting to think about it. I'm not ready to try the mods just yet. I want to see how the game plays and wait for 1.3. It's my opinion the devs are going to check out the mods, see what was done and incorporate the best features. Let's hope for the best! Good hunting!!

I also still play SH1 as a member of the Pacific Thunder Campaign. Have for seven years now. We will be starting up PTC8 either June 1st or July 1st (don't remember the exact date). SH1 has many things that I wouldn't mind seeing transferred to SHIV. But SHIV is slowing growing as the days march on and will get better. Just for conversation sake, I believe that Ubisoft now owns the rights to SH1.
