The real Dr. Strangelove (Interior Minister Schäuble) is just getting more and more paranoid each day.
Why can't that guy just get a stroke and be done with it?

I'm sure that Germany will be struck sooner or later, it's just a question of time. however, if one is calling Fire! as often as Schäuble does, nobody should be surprised if noone takes it serious anymore if he calls Fire...! just one more time.

Concerning the summit in Heiligendamm, millions have been pulverised to turn that ressort into a fortress, 14 km of hightech fences have been buit around the perimeter on the southern landside, border patrol, federal poilcie and regular polce are doing overtime and are presented by the thousand just to guard some bosses in a hotel, the northern sea coast is patrolled by armed vessels as well. Why the hell can't thebig bosses be shuttled to a huge military ship offshore or on the open ocean, where the regular military services would do usual routine and that would be enough to protect them? Take an aircraft carrier, use one of the hangars to built a nice hotel lobby into it, and you're done faster, cheaper, with more security, and less effort. Why this feudal demonstration of selfishness and power? I still wait to meet a private German who welcomes that summit here in Germany, most of us, it seems, do not want to have it, don't want to see our taxes wasted for the megalomania of just a few, and the local residents you certainly must not ask anyway - they partly olive in a prison and are heavily affected in the freedoms to move, to work, and shop owners have massive cuts in incomes, for customers are kept away. It's the same kind of idiocy like during Bush's visit in Germany, where whole sections of the cities he passed thropugh with his limousine were isolated and residents were told to never show up at the windows, and again enormous sums were spend to pay for the massive police presence. He even was not welcomed back then, and the summit now also is not welcomed.

So why the hell are we expected to pay such enormous money for it...??? What do they do there than cannot be done in the regular ways of diplomatic communciation as usual?

The media is a powerful weapon and you should not believe it out right, handily with caution. :yep:

Right now, politics and some mainstream media (mostly Spiegel online) have gotten into a fever pitch, not over muslim extremists. They would be a credible but low level threat. I suppose german islamists have recognized that the demographic bomb is far more effective than the high explosive one.
Instead, the good old leftist terror is being dusted off.
I mean there are some left-wing punks in Berlin and Hamburg who do the occasional arson attack on a police car or the car of a CEO once in a while.
They are on the same level as neo nazi violence right now. Present, but no threat to t the state and usually not killing people.
On Monday, the federal attourney had the police conduct a series of raids on leftist clubs and objects in Berlin and Hamburg and SPIEGEL and other media were babbling like the RAF had risen from the ashes and was threatening invade the forbidden city on the Baltic coast and to blow our beauty queen Chancellor, Dubya, soo to be ex-Tony, Vlad and the rest of the gang to kingdom come.
It turned out to be just a "rounding up of the usual suspects" with no concrete evindence of anything terroristic being planned.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like those "autonomous leftist" punks one bit.
Problem is, the way those raids were conducted was so contra legem that I seriously ask myself why we actually bother with laws. The legal "justification" of that raid would have made the police of Beijing proud.
Even if the targeted group might have been a bunch of pseudo-communist punks, I defintely do not like the federal government circumventing the constitution and ignoring all principles of german criminal procedure law.
It seems Germany is now in for its very own Patriot act.

I think an Al Quaeda strike is a real possebility here. It cannot be ignorred for reasons of labelling it "German islamists" instead og Al Quaeda.

The G8 would be a tempting target. Maybe not locally, but time-wise: it could be targetted although striking somewhere else - but at the time of the summit. That does not mean that I read too much into today's thread warnings. As I understand it, the source mainly is the American intel community, and you never know how much of what they say is true, and what is opportunistic manipulation. The Secret Service is paranoid anyway  I'm sure they made the BKA already boiling with anger at 98°C again

The police raids against several left and autonomous groups are still debated. when the police had indications for these groups planning violant acts, no matter if it conjunction with the G8 summit or not, they would have had an obligation to act.

The present revival of the debate about the RAF in the medias is a stupid hype only, caused by the Klar-affair, or better: the timetable of it: Klar's call for clemency just has deen rejected by the president. That's all there is about the RAF. It's as dead as it can be.

The immediate present's events are only an attempt to reduce the expected protests during the summit to meaninglessness. Hopefully there will be also no international news reports about huge crowds trying to chase the bosses into the sea - that is what they try to prevent... The demonstrations will be held, but they want them to be held far away where they are not heared, and will no be taken too much note of, and thus can be ignorred. "Silent!", is the motto.

mainly OT but I didn't want to start a new thread for something slightly related to this one:

Terrorist who Planned to Attack Germany Killed (http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/126838).

It's a small world after all.

I think the translator got it wrong.

The headline should read "Terrorist who Planned Attack On Germany Killed".

According to the article, he planned the attack last year on the German trains.

"It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself—anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face… was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime…" 1984 —pg 54
