hitting DEL doesn't remove HUD

Are you using the DEL "." key on the number pad on the keyboard?

"Num Lock" must be turned on for it to work.

nope, wasn't ussing the numpad one

Make sure NumLock is on, and then press the Del key on the Numpad.
