Hi All
Just have to air my frustrations here...

Type VIIB, 01feb40. Home plate Wilhelmshafen. Assigned to CF32, which is pretty far away. Havng encountered a couple of large tankers (or, rather: They encountered me:cool:) and one *very* well defended convoy in low waters around Shetland Isles (I pass), I continued my long and winding road.
Message: "Enemy Warship, NNE, 17kts", not too long from my path, but still very far away (> 500km). Plotted the best couse I possibly could and changed my course to meet it. Did some time calc, and should be near it around midnight. Light fog, 7M sea - pretty good. Shortyly before 0000, PD and a quick listen without much hope. It could have turned a zillion times, and you all know how difficult it is to get the course right at that distance. But hey! A delicate sound of thunder - more than one - but a bit far away and already close to abeam.
All ahead flank and surface, hoping to get close enough for something!
And what do I spot: 2 Dido's , 4 destroyers and - The Illustrious. Quick, set up the only 3 fish in front, but they are passing FAST and they are still a good way off. So it will have to be both slow and magnetic fish, too easy to see - rats!
Off they go, while I dive and run - there's not more I can do. BAM! One of the torps exploded after 100m or so, but the others continue... Will they hit?

Well, perhaps they would - but of course they are spotted, and the whole caboodle starts zigging. 3 shots, 1 prem and 2 misses - sigh:down:

How I HATE - and LOVE this game!

Yea - I've had that happen - brutal. With TFs, it's a gamble. The good thing about them is that they travel so fast, you can move up to them at flank turns without them hearing. Make sure to fire your slow T2s first, let them get about halfway, then fire your fast T1s. this way they will all hit at the same time, with minimum warning. In high seas, premature det is a major problem - you gotta get right in close.

I feel your pain. SH3 can be very, very frustrating at times.

Therein lies its greatness. :yep:

almost as good as having three duds as it happened to me when I encountered my first Battleship (the 'Revenge' as it happend) -- it passed 700 mtrs right in front of me, two DD's way behind me and some more on the other side - ideal conditions all around -- four fish, one passes in front of the darn thing and the other three play knock-knock... I dive fast and deep but within a few minutes I had five DD's dropping hell on me for over 40 minutes... they probably would have continued longer if I hadn't imploded :nope:

still, one day...

HAHA, maybe that would have more effect - it would have SOME effect anyway:o
And as for T2, I'm out of those and it would have been too far anyway.

But this whole patrol is jinxed. Further south, I get TWO convoy reports (however, it turns out, it must be the same convoy or they merged). By now I'm down to 3 fish, all in the rear (and one must be brought inside), which makes for a very awkward attack.
Anyway, they largest prey is a Fiji, and I go for that. Since I can only shoot 1 fish at a time, I aim to cripple it by firing at the screws. Good hit, the Fiji momentary stops, but the it continues with only 3 screws left. And I have to get deep real smart, the 2 Black Swans are after me.
Evade, reload, circle around. Sneak in again and Lo! and Behold: They've managed to fit a new screw in the middle of the Atlantic! :o How's that for a handyman?
Line up the shot, 3m/impact, dist 450m. LOS!.... A DUD!!!!!!!!!!!!:damn:
And here comes the Swans and yadda, yadda...

I'm giving up, I'm not gonna sink anything with my 1 remaining fish. I'll go to my patrol area, endure the 24 hours, and then to Cadiz to my first encounter with a Milk Cow.
