View Full Version : Confused: Interior which way is BOW/STERN?

I did a search on this but did'nt find anything.

When I first started with SHIV I assumed the HELM was in the Aft command room/conning tower based on the interior sounds (engine sounds coming from in front of the helm, escorts dropping DC's on my 180 sound bearing coming from in front of the helm) & the dive animation tilting down opposite the helm, especially in the conning tower. I thought it was odd but o.k. Then I go to the scopes and find the OB scope is in the back and Attack scope in the front, but when viewed from the external cam the OB scope is in the front. So I thought they must have just gotten the scopes reversed. Then I start reading about fleet boat steering sytems and find this.

Now I'm really confused, because it appears the helm and steering systems are in fact mounted on a forward bulkhead.

So in a nutshell:
A Are the interior sounds reversed?
B Are the scopes reversed?
C Is the dive animation reversed?
or
D All of the above.

How do you Skipper's get your head around this?:ahoy:

The interior sounds are reversed. The default control room camera view is at the forward end of the compartment. The periscopes are correct.

I've not noticed any tilting when I dive or surface...

Don't forget to add the prop rotation being reversed to your list.

"Hit Shokaku class carrier with three out of six torpedos. Recieved 105 depth charges during three hour period. Heard four terrific explosions in the direction of target, two and one half hours after attack. Believe that baby sank!" Lieutenant Commander Herman Kossler USS Cavalla
Been on board her and made sure I touched those exact torpedo tubes Kossler was talking about, just to say I touched the ones who sunk the Shokaku and took some revenge for Pearl Harbor. It was an awesome experience.

Sorry I don't have much more to add to the thread besides bow=front, aft=back and the sounds are completely reversed.

Go to the Conning tower and order a dive, then watch as the boat dives. Works in the Command room too, although not as pronounced.

A couple of years ago I was working in Galveston & Beumont for two weeks and did'nt even realize she was right there. Got caught up in work & so forth. I will be visiting USS Silversides this summer though. Hope to return with some good pics.

If that is true, it is so lame.

Just a tid bit of info. normally on warships in battle (surface) the helm is operated from below decks where no one(Helmsmen) can see whats happening.. That way if the Capt orders a course that heads in to, say an iceberg, no one woud panic and change course..
